Product Review: Permanon Platinum

$300 blower .....
$500 rupes products.....

i need a tree that grows money lol

Troy, fwiw I talked to permanon's higher ups at sema about that old blue formula permanon, that product was scrapped quick due to no durability. They said the new white version, the one ag is carrying is supposed to yield better durability. But for half the price hydr02 can be had and I've already tested it next to the old permanon and hydr02 releases the water faster for sure. Dunno about new permanon yet. I'll give it a shot soon.

Thanks for that info. Based on that I may want to try the new PP option.

Troy I just used this, I was impressed at how easy it was to apply. Beading on the rims was pretty insane.

i used platinum on my rx-7 but i did not rinse it off fast enough and got spotting that i did not see until i washed my car yesterday. the spots are very small and you can only see them in the direct sunlight. any idea on how to remove? I applied reload this time thinking that might take them off and it helped but did not completely remove.

how long did you let it sit before rinsing ? I think if its not diluted enough its easier to run into issues like this as well.

did you try a non abrasive paint cleaner to remove the spotting ?

I'm glad you like it. What version do you have as mine is the older "blue" platinum. I am interested to hear and see how it hold up for you.

Hmm....

Ok I'm going to ask a few questions so I can give you better advice.

What version are you using?
What dilution did you use?
Did you apply this in the sun?
How long did it take to apply / how long did it sit?

Not too long at all but I guess too long based on the results. I should have broken the car down into a few sections to minimize time between application and rinse.

Not yet, but I am getting some Dodo Juice Prime lite which is a non-abrasive paint cleaner for my moms scratch shield Infiniti Paint so I might try it on my RX-7 and see if it removes the spotting. Does this sound reasonable. I don't want to instill swirls in my Opti-Guarded RX-7 though. Would you recommend application by hand or PC?

Hi troy!
1. Using the newest version not the old group buy version. Milky clear liquid.
2. 5% dilution.
3. I believe the sun was out but I thought because it was cold out that I would not have any issues, but I guess I may have been wrong about that.
4. Took about 5 to seven minutes to apply. I did wheels and barrels and fenderwells as well all at once along with the paint. I let it sit an addition 3-5 minutes before final rinse and I used a blower to dry the paint but did not go around with a towel for a "Final Wipe" which thinking back may have been the issue.

Ok, so you have the newest Platinum. Obviously I still am using a slightly older version but hopefully I can help with the application at least.

  • A 5% solution sounds great especially if you are using it over OC as a topper.
  • If at all possible I would work out of the sun. Weather it is warm or not it may or may not have an effect on the outcome. But better safe than sorry.
  • 5-7 seven minutes shouldn't be a problem. So you spots could be due to the sun or other factors.
  • I would suggest working smaller areas if you are working in the sun.
  • Since PP bonds instantly there is no reason to "let it sit" any extra time. I like to take a dedicated MF applicator and spread the PP accross the surface to try and maximize the effectiveness and ensure coverage.
  • I would suggest flushing the surface sooner and then drying throughly. You don't want any water spots and that's almost what it sounds like you have. Very small water spots.

Troy I think we are on the same page. I think I could have avoided this by working out of the sun and flushing sooner. Do you have any recommendations for removing the spotting without swirling up the Opti-Guard. I try to touch my paint as least as possible.

I do have griots paint prep/pre wax cleaner/and prime lime lite. Don't know if these would do the trick.

Thanks,
Drew

I would think that the DDJ LPL by hand would get the job done for you. But I would suggest a test spot for sure. Also you may want to wait until your OC has fully cured.

Drew, once opti-gaurd is cured its actually very durable and polishing it by hand even with something abrasive will not remove it or dent it much.

I know OPT recommends using either Poli-seal or GPS to clean up opti guard or remove contaminants or high spots. But I personally use Optimum Finish as I dont want wax over the coating. I have personally found that pretty much any finishing polish does not even come close to removing Opti-Guard.

I actually went about recoating my rear bumper on my black car. I polished the rear out with Optimum Finish and a white polishing pad with my GG DA and came to realize that Opti Coat was not at all effected with this combination. I even stepped up to Menzerna Power Finish (PF2500) and a polishing pad and when I rinsed the panel it was still sheeting like I did nothing (neither did I remove the swirls on my hard BMW paint. Finally I stepped up to Menz Fast Gloss compound with a polishing pad and finally the panel was stripped. (while also removing the defects)

Ever since this day I realized that cured Opti-coat is actually pretty tough to remove so I no longer fear cleaning it up with light abrasive products. My product of choice now after coming to this conclusion is Auto Finesse Tough Prep. Its a paint cleaner that is designed to clean paint and strip the surface of all oils which leaving nothing behind. AF Tough coat has ultra fine abrasives which help in cleaning up the paint, but not aggressive enough to remove defects. I'm able to pull out water spots and contaminants without harming/degrading or removing opti coat IME.

oh, one thing to note is that Opti Coat is extremely sensitive before its fully hardened. Again, something I learned the hard way. It will scuff and marr easily for the first few days after its applied, so I would avoid touching it during the first week or two besides removing high spots.
