Are radar detectors legal?!?!? Why did I always think they were illegal?!?! My radar detector is looking in the distance when driving and knowing the hot spots which get hardwired into my head when I see a cop posted somewhere more than once in a week. Pretty sure I have the routine down in my town, but then again - road trips would be much nicer with a detector. Legal or not?
Legal in all states except for Virginia and on military bases.

Do radar detectors work on speed cameras?
Not quite accurate - Conn.
By the time your detector alerts, you've already been ticketed. Most jurisdictions have very little recourse for the adjudication of speed camera offenses.

Is that right? We don't have speed cameras here (yet! we've got the red light cams, though) I thought the cameras worked on a detectable freqency...or do they use an out-of-band frequency to detect and then whack you with instant-on on the legal frequency? The laser is the one usually that goes off to tell you you're getting a ticket, we've got a fair amount of laser use by the state police here, but of course it's got operational limitations (day only, manual aiming).
I think they repealed that law, I don't see the signs anymore. But if you drive on the highway there your detector goes off all the time making it useless because they have traffic monitors on the same frequency.
I stand corrected.

It depends. For a camera if someone ahead of you is speeding and trips the camera you'll get a I/O and be able to slow down.
Depends what is going around you to detect a camera or not. Sometimes with the laser camera you can get splash and still be able to slow down

I think we're getting mixed up with our terms, etc....without going into a huge discussion, it's almost impossible to get a laser "splash" due to the minimal dispersion of the beam and how it reflects off of objects vs. microwaves.
Not for nothing but when pulled over it takes 2 seconds to rip the detector down is the cop going to search your car ? Stupid question here in jersey they probably would.
And as for the smart people saying they only let you know their getting a ticket lol do un Tru I can name almost three times a day where I get a huge reading and I slow down everyone else blows by and then hey look a cop getting paid to hide in the bushes
Rustling around in the car after you are pulled over and before the cop approaches is a really good way to put the cop on edge...
As with everything else, there are cops who are good/smart radar operators, and those that are not. There are the guys who just leave the radar blasting and are easy to detect. Then there are the guys who use the instant on, but ping every car, even the ones who are going the limit, you always get a bounce from them. Then there are the good/smart operators who only hit the cars they can tell are significantly over the limit--and that is when (or when you are the only guy on the road) you can get nailed by the instant-on and it really doesn't matter if you've got a detector or not. If you want to play, you have to be cautious and vigilant, and if you're not then you shouldn't be speeding (driving?) anyway.
