Radar detector reccomendation ?

I've got the additional remote for my Valentine so I stuck the radar behind the rear view mirror so you can hardly see it. Put the remote in hands reach so when I'm near business or shopping malls that trigger it, I can push the mute.

Are radar detectors legal?!?!? Why did I always think they were illegal?!?! My radar detector is looking in the distance when driving and knowing the hot spots which get hardwired into my head when I see a cop posted somewhere more than once in a week. Pretty sure I have the routine down in my town, but then again - road trips would be much nicer with a detector. Legal or not?

Legal in all states except for Virginia and on military bases.

AHHH - makes perfect sense! I was in the military when looking at them lol - must've been told by fellow troops that it was illegal. Thanx man - so Im gonna go buy a radar detector now and some rolling papers :dblthumb2:

Not quite accurate - Conn.

I think they repealed that law, I don't see the signs anymore. But if you drive on the highway there your detector goes off all the time making it useless because they have traffic monitors on the same frequency.

By the time your detector alerts, you've already been ticketed. Most jurisdictions have very little recourse for the adjudication of speed camera offenses.

Is that right? We don't have speed cameras here (yet! we've got the red light cams, though) I thought the cameras worked on a detectable freqency...or do they use an out-of-band frequency to detect and then whack you with instant-on on the legal frequency? The laser is the one usually that goes off to tell you you're getting a ticket, we've got a fair amount of laser use by the state police here, but of course it's got operational limitations (day only, manual aiming).

I wasn't aware about Connecticut having a law against them.

It depends. For a camera if someone ahead of you is speeding and trips the camera you'll get a I/O and be able to slow down.

Depends what is going around you to detect a camera or not. Sometimes with the laser camera you can get splash and still be able to slow down

I stand corrected.

We have them by the hundreds here in the metro region:city, county, state, and the District. All independant from each other.

Stationary. $$$ millions earned and reported on various news media.
Mobile(towed by vehicle,left in place).
Mobile(on speed enforcement vehicle).
School zones are the worst as some are programmed to work evev on holidays and wknds.

I think we're getting mixed up with our terms, etc....without going into a huge discussion, it's almost impossible to get a laser "splash" due to the minimal dispersion of the beam and how it reflects off of objects vs. microwaves.

The biggest deal in our area are the camera systems that capture individual lanes at one geographic spot. Four lane road/ four cameras on a tree. The camera tree is alarming to some and cause rear-end collisions due to hard breaking at the point of the tree.

As time goes on, we will have to get used to Big Brother, there are/will be cameras everywhere, and the speed and red light cameras will be too.

Don't remember what mine is. It has a voice alert and will notify me when a railroad crossing or ememergency vehicle is approaching. I like that, but it's usually not plugged in any more, I have been making a conscious effort not to speed, as traffic and road conditions around here means I won't get there any faster even if I try to. It's nice to be alerted to a speed trap though.

I think getting one that can be updated would be worthwhile, as the radar equipment is constantly getting better. I'm skeptical about whether it would warn you in time to avoid a ticket though, just my .02.

If you know some OTR truck drivers, ask them what they use.

Without me doing research I believe the systems are own and operated by the huge military complex companies such as Northrop Gruman or Lockheed, and the jurisdiction gets a cut of the revenue - the lion share goes to the equipment/program holder.

Depends on the angle of the beam. But I do agree with this statement.

I've gotten LIDAR hits where it's impossible to me to get a direct hit. Usually it's through a windshield of a car in front of me. That's how I usually define "splash".

Anyways, I have an Escort 8500x50...looking to sell it and get a V1

Not for nothing but when pulled over it takes 2 seconds to rip the detector down is the cop going to search your car ? Stupid question here in jersey they probably would.

And as for the smart people saying they only let you know their getting a ticket lol do un Tru I can name almost three times a day where I get a huge reading and I slow down everyone else blows by and then hey look a cop getting paid to hide in the bushes

Radars do work and not one person could change my mind get the v1 and then post your findings

Rustling around in the car after you are pulled over and before the cop approaches is a really good way to put the cop on edge...

As with everything else, there are cops who are good/smart radar operators, and those that are not. There are the guys who just leave the radar blasting and are easy to detect. Then there are the guys who use the instant on, but ping every car, even the ones who are going the limit, you always get a bounce from them. Then there are the good/smart operators who only hit the cars they can tell are significantly over the limit--and that is when (or when you are the only guy on the road) you can get nailed by the instant-on and it really doesn't matter if you've got a detector or not. If you want to play, you have to be cautious and vigilant, and if you're not then you shouldn't be speeding (driving?) anyway.

Excellent point! When I was in the traffic division, I would park my Harley at all sorts of different places along the side of the highway..never the same place twice. You get to know who's booking and who's not. I used LASER and just shot the fast ones. I could care less about the ones just barely going over hte limit. I liked catching the ones going really fast. You had to wait longer, but you always got rewarded sooner or later. I miss doing that; it was fun.

Always love to hear a cop saying how they liked pulling that one over. Yet when their son or daughter gets popped they have a big old gold card to get out of trouble. Best part is you guys do the most illegal stuff. Incredible how this country works.

No matter what anyone says to the guy who wants the radar get it it has saved me so many times I would buy ten more anything to not give the guy parked behind ten feet of bushes the satisfaction of coming to
My window like the king of the world. And rustling to take down the detector ? No shot it takes your hand and two seconds to pull it down let's be real. And all the " you shouldn't be speeding " are you guys really pulling that almost as bad as the guy in the left lane not
Moving over because he feels you shouldn't be going faster then the exact limit. You never know why someone is speeding just remember that all you civilian police.
