Raven Black FRS - Corrected & Opti-Coated (Pro)

As far as I can tell from my experience with the FR-S they are manufactured by Fuji Heavy Industries, which is Subaru's parent company(or you can just say it's Subaru). That would lead me to assume FHI is painting all of them as well. I don't think Toyota and Subaru paint are far apart anyway. So would be hard to tell the difference unless some came in Toyota Super White(single stage titanium oxide white). As Subaru doesn't use any SS paint to my knowledge.
Would take a Rep from Subaru to tell me otherwise. :)

Lol fair enough...well i dont know WHATS different but, the stickiness of the STI compared to the 3 FRS's and the 1 BRZ we did is very noticeable and ive seen several other detailers report the same thing...the wonders of paint i guess huh?

Wish I was as educated/knowledgeable with polishing paint as I am now when I had my '05 STi. Never thought of that paint as sticky. Will have to find some dark Subaru paint to work on so I can help figure this out.
All I know is that Menz SIP/SF4000(106FA) on a Hydrotech tangerine and or crimson pad on my PC are my go-to combos for soft paint.
And this is why we have forums. To help each other figure out what works best.:)

This was a 2013 Subaru, i think it may be more so with the newer ones that the polish sticking to the paint has been more so of an issue.

106FA WAS my go to polish for soft paint...but its so damn oily that on certain paints i found that having to wipe the paint over n' over to remove all the oil sometimes cause towel marring.

My new go to is HD Polish. It got my vote when i used it on this show car Camaro SS that we take care of. After his 2nd repaint...it for whatever reason has THE SOFTEST paint i've ever encountered...everything marred...everything. Only 106FA on a LC Blue would leave it haze/mar free...but the oil was a PITA to remove. Well, last time we went to go do it, we had some HD polish to try out...and it finished down JUST as nice as the Menz but without the excessive oil that FA had....so now i just use HD on soft paints...im actually gonna probably sell off my excess 106FA and 85RD now...thats how confident i am in HD.

Have you used 106 on a tangerine pad or a pad similar? Great cut and finish for paint not requiring compounding. What's the most cut you get from HD.? Also, have you tried using waterless wash to wipe off 106? I do the first wipe with the course nap on say a rolled edge MF, the turn to the plush side and remove the remainder of residue with WW if need be. Haven't caused marring with it. Have tried opt fp2 for final polish before OC so I can just do a water wipe down before application. But, not a fan of using it to remove light defects, never get any correction with it. Will have to try HD.:)

I have a couple of times with the tangerine pad...it worked pretty well but in most cases I'll use 205 for a 1-step for light stuff.

I think the best 'cut' if you wanan call it that, with HD was on that damn STI actually. It was decently swirled but a 1-step on a B&S blue pad knocked them all out and finished down great. Most times though HD will just be my finishing polish on softer paints and ill use 205 on medium to harder paints for finishing.

205 definitely has more cut than HD, i saw a post on my detailing group on facebook where one of the members use a MF finishing pad and 205 and then the same pad but with HD to try to remove 3000 grit sanding marks...205 made a very big improvement while HD only made a slight cut....so thats why i'll usually use HD as just a final polish...or a 1-step on new cars.

Thanks for that info. Looks like I need to put 205 and HD in my arsenal.:)

Just have a question about applying the OC guys. Can I use any microfiber suede cloth? like the one they use for the electronic wipes.

First off, we dont use OC any more...or any optimum product for that matter. Long story but yea, just thought id throw that out there.

If however you do use OC, or another coating (CQuartz, CQuartz UK being my two over the counter favorites) the micro suede towels corey at carpro-us.com sells are what i recommend. If the towels you are referring to are like those or closely similar...you're good to go :dblthumb2:

I am sorry to hear that sir. I am sure you have reasons for that. Are you familiar with the lens cleaner for your cellphone when you buy a lens protector? thats the kind of microfiber suede that I was thinking about. It is way less cheaper than what car pro suede charges. You can also get a larger towel that you can cut to pieces. :)

So I was thinking of buying this instead and using it.

Greed, pathetic customer service and loyalty...just a couple reasons :)

Yes im familiar...ive used them before with no problem. I honestly cant say if they work better or equal to the microsuedes from carpro-us.com or not...havent used the ones you're talking about in quite some time. I, like you, buy the larger towels and cut them up myself to save some $ :props:

Aren't we hear to make money.. Lol sometimes we intend to buy stuff that we can get cheaper as a raw product! Great I will try it out and let you know Sir! Thanks again for the great feedback. :)

wow, it seems that you aren't the only one. don't know if it has to do with gloss coat and/or price increase (or anything else having to do with their products/advertisement), but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. so many great products out there these days, i'm sure it's easy for you to find suitable/equivalent products from another company that meet your budget/criteria. good luck to you and Dani, you both seem to be keeping busy...

Thank you :dblthumb2:

Yup, since day one we've worked side by side. 1000's of washes, 100's of wash and wax gigs and Im sure we're close to 100 polish out jobs now too...not to mention all the fun interiors! Its great having someone you can trust and work in sync with the way we do. :dblthumb2:

Wow, thank you...those are pretty strong words. We are always trying to keep it moving and get better! Be it some simple little trick to apply a coating or something else we figure out along the way...I just figure the day we quit learning is the day we should quit period.

Thanks!

It got a work out last week. I still use it for 1-step polish outs. I've actually tinkered with priming a foam pad with D300 and then using 205 from there on out on 1-step polishes and I've gotta say...it gives some pretty damn good correction and finishes down quite nice too...the Accura we did I'd say we got about 75% correction out of a 1-step....not too bad. But yeah for the most part these days, its all DA all day :)

We did a Subaru STI about a month back....HATED that paint. BRAND NEW car and the polish would just STICK to the paint...it was horrible. The FRS and BRZ's we've done have been great to work with...but the straight Subaru, i was not happy with that paint lol.

We finally figured out a trick...spritzed the panel with Megs Rinseless clay lube mix that we had...then polished it...and it allowed for easier removal of the polish. Then had to IPA to be sure no filling was happening...which left freakin streaks galore but, the paint wasn't getting filled. So then after we finished polishing we sprayed each panel with IPA, then did a rinseless wash on it ...that allowed us to remove the polishing oils and also allowed us to dry the paint without leaving streaks all over.

It was a pain in the ass but the owner was ecstatic and tipped quite nicely :)

Just read a detailer buddy of mine out in Cali who did an black subaru...he had problems galore with it. Either with it marring or the polish sticking or the coating not adhering ...and he's much more experienced than I am...said he dropped over 100 hours on that damn thing just trying to get it done RIGHT. Big time props to him for going through all that...but I'll tell you what, its really got me thinking whether or not I'd want to correct and coat a black Subaru or not lol

I did a black Subie this year and I had to do the same thing with it that you did with this owner. I had to call and let them know that it was going to be more work, because I could not have it leave the shop looking like it did. I hate that paint as well, but if you can work it out, those Subie guys love it.

Subarus are one of the best clients for a coating.

HUMP
