REVIEW: Dollar Shave Club vs The Art of Shaving

Hey OP, I've got to thank you. This review is what finally made me order the DSC and I'm more than pleased.

The razors are the same high quality as the Gillettes as far as I can tell, but for a lower price, which is great.

The real amazing thing is that shave butter though! Never again do I have to worry about trying to find the best shaving cream for me, or the fact that they're white foaming creams that don't let you see! This one is goes on clear, lasts the entire shave, and even when you run the blade over the area again it's still lubricated for more passes! It feels fantastic and I can get a closer shave.

My skin has never looked better. Thanks again, I say if you're on the fence about ordering, please do but make sure you're getting the shave butter, that's the game changer!

Glad you like DSC!

I liked them for the razor prices, but when they came out with the shave butter, I have never been happier with a product I use for shaving.

I didn't expect to find so many wet shavers on this forum. I also use a safety razor and either a hard soap or cream with a brush. If I don't buy anything else, I have enough blades and soaps to last me at least 10 years. There is nothing like shaving with a razor that is over 100 years old and getting a better shave than I used to get with cartridges.

I use a safety razor and regular shaving razor blades. Everything from Amazon was about $50 or so. I've had everything for over a year now, still working on my first pack of blades (100 per pack). Gives a nice close shave, and really saves alot of money. I splurge and get gilette shave gel lol. Really beats spending $30 a month on razors.

^^^^this.

It's all in the prep. I use the AOS stuff as well.

-hot towel (hottest you can stand)
-pre shave oil (2/3 min wait time)
-shaving cream (I like it thick)
-new razor every time (I shave in slow motion, let the razor do its job)
-styptic pen (lol slow down going too fast, I rarely us this anymore)
-cold water (and MORE cold water, I double rinse)
-after shave

I'm usually in for 20mins, little extra time is well worth it.

Art of shave product are alill pricey, but I like them. The shaving creme last forever, as well as the aftershave, I run through the oil like crazy, but to me that's the key to the shave.

I just got the Art of Shaving after shave balm- Sandalwood scent.. OMG i love it.

no irritation on the skin either as it does not have alcohol. The smell is nice and you can smell it for an entire day.

Anybody not having good luck with the Merkur single blade? The one that a lot of members purchased when first discussing this topic? Mine is not shaving as good as with other razors, i can barely feel the razor. Any input?

Check your blade angle. Start with the head of the razor flat and bring the handle down till you start feel the razor blade grab your wiskers.

What "other" razors are you talking about, are they saftey razors as well?

What blades? They will change the razor as well. I use Featers, and Astra SP's in mine.

It i loosen the handle to get more of the blade feel then the Merkur gets too loose and opens up as if i were to want to remove the blade.

I use standard blades, 100 pack i bought as a combo with the Merkur.

You may want to look int to an adjustable whether vintage(fatboy/slim adjustable) or new (merkur progress/futur). That will allow you to adjust the gap between the blade and bar. Some have also used custom shims on standard 3 piece razors.

If you do look into modern adjustables just be aware that the Merkur Futur is an aggressive adjustable - I have one and at its lowest setting it is more aggressive than a Gillette Fatboy at its highest setting. The Progress is much more mild in its adjustability.

I started with Sandelwood as well, smells great. Now I'm on to Lavender.

Just got around to trying the dollar shave club 6 blade cartridge and handle. Had a good in store coupon. Overall a impressive shave. Got a tube of their shave butter to try also.

You know, I looked at this thread, and said "how did I not see this for 2 weeks?" I kept looking at the date and saying to myself "yeah, started 2 weeks ago". I guess I was just looking at the "4" at the end of the date, and finally when I was getting ready to post...oh...2014, not 2024. Perhaps another cup of coffee is in order. Anyway, don't get me started on this razor stuff.

Crazy thing… You may find this impossible to believe, but I actually used the same Mach 3 blade for about 10yrs. straight and it actually performed pretty alright even till the day I finally chucked it and bought some new blades.

And even crazier is the fact that I used to shave in the shower with no shaving cream during those 10yrs.

I’ve since gone back to using shaving cream but seem to need to replace my razor blades regularly these days. Strange now that I really think about it.

The DSC shave butter was a hit. Very good. Clear so you can see where you're shaving. Only difference is you do not wet your face first. Just apply and shave. As good as CREMO? Hard call. Been using CREMO ever since I found out about it.

Don’t ask me. I use a 1948 Gillette super speed (amongst others) and DE razor blades. Works along with brush and soap for me. If I’d recommend a razor to someone today it would be a Henson.

Razors are like underwear. You usually stick with what works for you. Lol.
