The short answer is that there really is no regular time interval.

You don't compound and polish as a part of any regular "maintenance cycle". For non-professional, retail products that Mothers has (and competitors), that is a different animal altogether because those products are not 100% abrasive in nature (they have cleaning agents in them to keep things simple for the casual user).

Typically you compound when the paint has become dull and has a fair amount of swirls/scratches. And typically you would polish when the paint's finish is starting to show some wear, such as water spots, light-medium swirling, etc.... - OR - you want to jewel the paint for whatever reason, maybe you want to put a fine wax on the vehicle or a coating - things like that.
