Okay Corey, here is the answer (or not) straight from Sonax customer care.

Hi Jon-

Thanks for contacting us and I hope you’re having a good week.

Regarding your question about the SONAX Wheel Cleaner being safe for the plastic center cap on a vehicle.

The short answer is, I really don’t know. It depends on what the center cap is made of (i.e. different materials that are used in processing plastics) and what kind of coating or treatment the plastic part has had.

I will tell you things I do know.

1. The SONAX Wheel Cleaner is 100% Acid free and ph-neutral. It will not harm or damage any type of wheel that is out on the market now and that includes not destroying the clear coat that is applied to almost every wheel now. SONAX Germany has explained to us the product is all surface safe.
2. Per your specific question, I have not seen or been provided with any feedback from anyone that has used it in which they’ve had a problem with the Wheel Cleaner discoloring or destroying a plastic wheel cover.

Sorry if I didn’t specifically answer your question. I just cannot 100% guarantee it will not discolor the wheel covers.

Please respond to this email if you have any more questions.

All the best, Jason

SONAX

Jon, I'm doing my neighbors car saturday and came back to check on this answer which I knew you had provided. I just realized I never thanked you for taking the time to get the answer from Sonax... So thank you very much my friend!

Her car has only been washed once since she bought it years ago. I'm gonna hook her up with a 12 hour special. Actually I'll be happy if I can do everything I'm planning in 12 hours!

your talking about to the car right?

Just used sonax on a set of destroyed factory toyota rims... 8 ys old car and the car as only seen a automated wash a few times... needless to say it too multiple applications of sonax and later wheel brightener to get them back to 95 percent clean... not counting barrells... well sonax did a ton better then p21s has ever done for me on wheels like this. but again it left behind spots that even 3 -4 applications and scrubbings with Megs wheel brightener where not removing. I'd pay the 11percent more to get something that actually works in a timely manner on nasty wheels like these.

On a side note I did let it dwell to long on one wheel and I did have a issue after. Sonax did haze the wheel surface but it also did clean up with a quick hand polishing with 105 on a foam wax pad.

For cost effective work on nasty rims that are factory coated i'll turn to megs wheel brightener... for all after market or rims i am not sure of... sonax will get the nod. P21s just doesn't work fast enough and I have had it dry on the wheel in a matter of ten or 15 minutes.... so letting it dwell for 2 hours never seems feasable to me

No problem Corey, you have done the same many times.

Looking forward to some great car photos next week of your work.

Jon, just wanted to report back for your review:

I used the Sonax on that van and it cut the break dust off the plastic hub caps with no damage. I rinsed the wheel first so they were wet. I let it sit on there for at least 3-5 minutes. Had to use a mitt to get some off and a toothbrush for the tight seams but as long as something rubbed against it... it came right off without damage. Only had to use a wee bit which made me happy since I was wasting my Sonax on her caps. :)

Great, nice to know. Glad to hear that the plastic didn't melt!

How did the 12 hours go?

Ok, I started at 5:30 am and stopped at 5:00 pm. The patient was a Toyota Sienna. I tell you that (silver/light green - metallic paint) is no friend of mine. She got that color because it was the most difficult to see any dirt or imperfection on. Let me tell you it achieves it's goal of hiding imperfections. You can't even see polish or wax or anything on it without an LED, one eye closed, and the vision of an eagle while looking at it from 1 inch away and moving the light at 1 inch per hour to catch a glimpse of some change. It's a cloaking device I tell you!!!

Anyway:
Wheels-Sonax
Tires-Griots Rubber CLeaner
Gas Cap Door and Front bumper-ARO
Wash-Prerinse with foam gun
Window seals and exterior black trim-Griots Rubber Cleaner
Wash-Megs GC and Chennille wash mitt with Pinnacle Bug Sponge
Door jambs and behind seals-Patience, my left thumb, water, & wash mitt
Clay-DP and ONR
Flex 3401
Polish and Paint Cleaners-M105, M205, Wolfgang
Pads-LC/HT Cyan, Tangerine, and Crimson... Also LC white
Sealants and Waxes-Wolfgang Deep Gloss, Natty's Blue
Door jambs-Patience, water, & wash mitt
Windows-DP Krystal Vision
Window seals Protected-303 AP
Tire Dressing-DP Tire Gloss
Interior-DP total interior cleaner

I think that's most of it. Anyway, I had to pull out the step ladder to do the roof. There were these little black spore like things that were all up and down the whole passenger side. Bless that Pinnacle Bug sponge cause it new just what to do with them. I basically washed that whole side all over again with the PBS. Clayed the front and spot clayed the sides. Polished some areas with 105 but the majority with just 205. Machine sealed with WDGPS (First time using it and it does leave a nice slick surface. I used Nattys Blue on the areas that were hard to reach with machine and also the rear which was hangin out from my canopy in the sun. Speaking of which I was surprised I got that puppy under the canopy. After the sun came out I put up the canopy and raised it to its highest level. Had about 4-6 inches to spare. The interior and door jambs were an incredible mess. I put the hose nozzle on cone setting and held the trigger lightly while holding back the seals around the jambs with my other thumb to spray the buildup out before and after using the mitt. That's pretty much the story. I should have gotten some pics but I wasn't planning to post this untill you asked. If I'd gotten the camera out it would have been another 2 hours of stopping and starting and I really just wanted to do the work on this one. Maybe I'll grab a pick or 2 tommorrow when its sunny again.
