Rookie mistake, need help

You made this comment the other day when we were having a similar discussion about Wheel Brightener.^

With all due respect, you could say anything you want about how it will supposedly burn my hand and even if you were to run water over it for 15 minutes it would do nothing to neutralize it... But that's just talk.

Darren proved your claim to be completely wrong. He actually speaks from experience [unless you actually believe he was suffering uncontrollable burns the following day] I'm sorry but I don't think he'd be stupid enough to do that to himself.

Who's word is credible in this situation? Darren who speaks from actual experience? Or someone who simply read an MSDS sheet?

...Sprays his hand soaking wet and continues filming his vid, describing how his arm isn't going to burn up or fall off due to "acid"

Or someone who "says" my hand would suffer severe burns if Wheel Brightener makes contact with skin...

I'll go with the actual proof and experience, thank you.
And as far as running down the street or gutters where the kids ride their bikes.. Have you ever heard of a situation where any harm has actually occurred due to this? No, you haven't. Because the truth is that if even someones pet dog would turn up severely ill due to any product from any detailing manufacturer, that company would be in hot water. But you don't hear about things like that happening, because in the real world your far fetched stories don't actually happen.

How did we even get on this subject again? Why do you always hate on Darren? I mentioned him to OP because of Magic Erasers, not to get in this debate about acid based wheel cleaners. Lol.

I'm not going to dignify that rant with a response, other than to say I don't "always hate on Darren". I didn't even remember the guy's name, and I don't believe I have ever said anything about him except perhaps a couple of years ago when I first saw that video.

Perhaps these will be more convincing to you than my "far-fetched stories":

Okay, I'm gonna purchase a DA, (I was going to anyways) and hit it with some polish and a proper polishing pad and see what happens. If no results, I guess I'll try getting paint from dealer? Or should I look into Dr. Colorchip kit?? I heard people talk about Blender as well and saw a video where they are mixing clear with the base coat. Should I consider those ideas or just touch up, put down a spray clear, and then polish? Thanks

Also, is blender something you get from dealer? Is it one type for all colors? Lol, I'm totally clueless.

If that's a plastic wheel arch--to me it looks like the black spots are the plastic, which means polishing more is only going to make it worse, not better. IMO Dr. Colorchip isn't going to help you because you don't have a defined "chip" to wipe the paint into.

Blender, mixing clear with base, etc. are all pretty advanced techniques that probably aren't going to help you. I think your options are to get some touchup paint, which is not going to get you a "8/10", it will probably get you a 20-ft repair. Or take it to the dealer and see if they can do a spot repair (they won't do that in their bodyshop, they will have a guy who comes around who does it in the lot).

I'm looking at the pictures again--is that actually the bumper you were working on?

@Setec Astronomy. I may have mistaken you for another user in regards to any previous comments about Darren. If you say you've never said anything negative about him on here before than it was my mistake.

@WeaversPSU. Yea unfortunately your thread got seriously derailed.. I was going to reply to Setec Astronomy's last post earlier but decided against it, because I'm so over this debate over the Wheel Brightener.. I was over it a few days ago when him and I were arguing [for lack of a better word] about the very same subject. Lol. That's why I found it somewhat comical how this thread somehow got derailed into this debate I had zero interest in revisiting. You should just start another thread with your next questions.

1 last thing I'd like to say in regards to the Wheel Brightener: I just want to say that my argument for it really isn't based on my support for it as a product that I like to regularly use, as a matter of fact I've been working on the same 32oz. dispensor bottle for about a year now. Only because I have 2 main products that I prefer over it based on their cleaning results.

So when I read your final reply and noticed you provided links to several articles, I instead turned my phone off and grabbed my bottle of Wheel Brightener and went outside to use it for the 1st time in a while. [I preffer hands on experience over reading something on the internet]

No special tutorial going on here... Simple as it gets. Spray on, hose off.

I don't know if it was due to my sprayer being at the ideal stream or whether it was due to the Wheel Brightener itself but I seemed to spray and stay very well exactly where I sprayed it on the wheel, meaning almost zero fumes. I couldn't even remotely smell the scent of Wheel Brightener on any of the 4 wheels during the whole cleaning process. Once I was done I couldn't help but come to a conclusion that I think might make sense for both the people for and against using an Acid based wheel cleaner.

Here's what I honestly think: After using the stuff it was clear as day that I wasn't even remotely putting myself in a hazardous situation by using the Wheel Brightener as directed. [please keep in mind that I've never drank this stuff. I've never sprayed it onto my skin. I've never accidentally sprayed it into my eyes.] I even wore a mask just for anyone out there thinking "omg acid"!

So after having revisited Wheel Brightener I couldn't help but think that there's always going to be 2 kinds of people in this world. Different strokes for different folks.. For example there's people who love roller coasters, and people who simply do not like getting on for whatever reason. [I happen to love roller coasters and I can't understand how anyone could not enjoy the ride]
Another example that came to mind was how some people like reptiles and have them as pets. Personally I cannot stand reptiles or insects and don't even want to get near them. A snake owner could say not to worry they're not going to harm you in anyway but I don't want them near me. Even grasshoppers gross me out, even though they're "harmless"

Point is that maybe it's similar to how the people so strongly against using an acid based wheel cleaner feel vs. the people who see it as completely no big deal as long as it's used as directed. I hope that makes sense. In the end I have no dog in this fight as I stated I rarely even use Wheel Brightener these days. But I stand by my beliefs that it's totally safe when used as directed.

Have a good day, and stay safe.

No its the fender. For some reason the site twists my photos around. I have an even better, more close up photo but it won't upload which is annoying.

Well, you don't have to worry about it rusting. Some people can do pretty good repairs with an aerosol can, one of the tricks is spraying through a mask (a piece of thin cardboard with a hole in it). Try paintscratch.com and automotivetouchup.com. At least you can practice spraying on a cardboard box or something before you try it on the car.

Wow.

Just read through this entire thread. That picture of Darrin, me and Eldorado was taken when I taught a detailing class at Mel Craig's shop. I was out there to attend the George Barris funeral and also film a TV show.

Here's the thread,

SoCal Roadshow Class - Pictures & Comments

Darrin grilled me to see if I actually was the real deal... he's not the first and he won't be the last and I never mind. I learned to teach classes when I use to call on body shops and teaching gruff old guys that think they know everything was some of the BEST training I ever had.

Here's your picture uploaded to our gallery so it can be "inserted" instead of attached. Our site doesn't actualy twist your pictures, this is how they come off your camera phone. When you look at it on your camera phone SOMEHOW the camera knows how to display it to you so it looks normal. Take my word for it... I've worked with a few pictures in the forum world in my life. For the below picture I rotated it before I uploaded it.

You have rubbed or burned through the clearcoat and then rubbed or burned through the colorcoat and what you're seeing is either some type of primer or ecoat or the material the body panel is made from.

The paint also looks like a metallic finish?

Here's the deal. You have nothing to lose except money and time to try to fix it yourself. If you screw it up or you're not happy with the results then you can always take it to a body shop and for around $300.00 give or take a few hundred dollars depending up on the shop, you can have that area resprayed. They will likely do what's called a "blend" and my hunch is it will never look perfect because it's a metallic. Plus matching the hue of the color 100% exactly is really difficult.

Locate a PBE store in your home town and locate the paint mixer guy in the store. Tell him you want to purchase an areosol can of touch up paint that matches your car. You'll need the color code for your car. He can probably help you to find it or do a Google search.

Then you're going to have to learn how to basically do body work and painting.

:)

Thanks, that was super helpful! It's only the size of a nickel so I'd like to fix myself. Not sure what you mean by body work but I'll try to do more research on how to best approach it in the next couple days. Yes, it's a dark grey metallic. Seems like I spray, then apply clear coat after and hopefully it looks decent. Thanks for taking the time!

Apparently he got through the clear. Second member this week.

Well, make that 3 people this week! LC thin foamed wool pad + GG6 + Meguires M101 = "Well, that certainly looks a bit splotchey..."

Not a big deal, just messing about on our 'Practice' car; black 2007 Mazda3. Got Zaino'd once back in 2007, maybe 10 runs thru a car wash since that time, sat outside in driveway most of its life.

Thought maybe paint was a bit oxidized so went aggressive trying to get it to that deep, dark, inky black of our other cars. Oops...

And this is how we (well, me, anyway) learn.

Since April car has seen Wolfgang Twins and Uber Ceramic, D300 and Megs microfiber cutting disks and HD Poxy, some more polishing with WG Finishing Glaze topped with Collinite 915 and now a try with M101 and first the thin wool, then LC Orange foam and topped with Dodo Juice Purple Haze. Looks good except for that, uh, splotches on the trunk. Still not a deep, dark black...looks great and shiny in garage but a bit washed out 8n sun/daylight. Eh, trading it in this fall anyway.

A car only has so much clearcoat to give for the sake of learning!
