Is a rotary true *geared* forced rotation like the Flex 3401? The limited time I've used a rotary, I could get it to bog down somewhat. Never happened with the Flex 3401.

Hmmmm, what the heck were you doing with your rotary to get it to "bog" down????

Must have been an El Cheapo Harbor Frieght rotary or something!
 
Yes they are a direct drive. The rotary has a ring and pinion just like a differential in a vehicle. If the rotary bogged down it must be a cheaper rotary that does not have much torque. When looking for a good rotary you want one with torque. Rotaries with torque would be the DeWalt, Dynabrade, Milwaukee and the Fein.

Hey Dana, I know you don't like a rotary unless it weighs more then some carsIm the MAN
.......but do you have an opinion on those offered by Flex? I love my Flex 3401 so much that if I ever bought a rotary I think Flex has earned my business.

I have a 3403 and love it for bumpers, side panels and with 4" pads. The LK603 is being discontinued so I've heard.

I would never buy a Flex tool, but just like the Metabo it is light weight which means it does not have the torque. So when you use any type of pressure the lightweight rotaries will go into thermal shut down. There is a reason the other rotaries are heavier, they have more torque and deal with some pressure applied without shutting down. Also remember, and I am sure you are well aware of this Corey, is that something with more amps does not make it more powerful. Like I said in the other thread when buying a rotary you want one with torque.

Hence, the harbor freight rotary. I think it's 10amps, but what a pile of ****!

Which thread Dana? I did a search and can't seem to find it. Would be interested in reading it since you are so passionately behind the rotary. Someday (maybe?) I'll get tired of my Flex.

If we are talking about the same thread I did follow that and saved a link to it in case the time comes for me to get a rotary. Thanks for your advice
 
Most rotary polishers use helical gears and are a direct drive. Helical gears allow for a mush smoother operation for years of trouble-free service. If someone's bogging down one of these units it is more than likely a lower quality light duty unit.

I've never been able to even slightly bog down my Makita 9227.....
