My wife found a discount coupon for Pepboys that offers 5 quarts of Royal Purple Oil and a Royal Purple Oil Filter for 35.00. I picked it up and saved 30.71 over the shelf pricing. Now I am wondering as a diehard Mobil 1 user, should I have any concerns using this product ??

I plan to use it first in my new daily driver, a Lacrosse CXS. But value seems so good I might go back and grab two more sets for the truck and Vette. Any recommendations or challenges ???

I have never heard any issues of using RP. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic in my car. If RP wasn't so pricey, I'd probably be using RP. From what I've read, it does really well in higher temp applications (like a car that gets beat on). I could just not justify the price difference over Mobil 1. I know that many of the FSAE race teams use RP in the Yamaha R6 motors. We use Mobil 1 in ours because we get it for free (from a sponsor) but previous years had discussed making the switch to RP. I wouldn't be worried. Even a quick google search will bring up good RP reviews.

Is the coupon still active? Can you share link? Please, thanks :-)

Honestly I wouldn't bother. The fact is if you change your oil within any reasonable interval, most quality synthetics will perform the same.

Now if your wanting to increase your interval, and are willing to get an oil analysis or two done, then a high priced synthetic may be what you are looking for.

I guarantee though, that you will not see any difference. So my suggestion is stick to Mobil 1.

Also don't get fooled into 3k oil changes... Many cars today recommend 5k-7500mile oil changes. The ones that still say 3k are trying to rip you off. I personally run all my cars for 5k. I sent in an oil sample after 5k, and from the results I could probably double my interval.

I however choose not to because my cars tend to sit a lot.

That is an awesome deal for RP. I am a full-synthetic person and will run good stuff, I used to run RP until I bought a house and had other responsibilities that required me to tone down some of my purchases. As mentioned, good quality synthetic is mostly all the same. However, I guess in my mind I was doing good by getting the more expensive stuff. Plus, its just cool to see pouring purple oil in vs the regular golden stuff. haha. If I were you, I would buy it up. I still have about a half quart left from when I used to use it... now my lawn mower gets the left overs. I can promise you its the most spoiled lawn mower on the block lol!

Your normal every day driver won't notice any difference. They recommend 3k oil changes for your traditional oil. Most synthetics say 5k intervals. Irregardless, 35$ for 5 quartz and an oil filter is a pretty solid deal for a synthetic oil.

It definitely is! I wish they would allow me to buy 3 additional quarts at the same discount! I would have to buy 2 specials for one change. ugh!

I don't think RP is full synthetic. I don't think it even lasts as long if a TBN test is done on it (means it shows how long until the oil needs changed. A TBN number below 2 means it needs changed). Anyway, I believe RP is preffered in some applications because it has better bearing coating protection compared to other oils (just what I've read on forums). I bet if we look around on bobistheoilguy.com we could find some stuff out about them. Honestly, if I want oil answers, it'd be the place I'd go.

Used nothing but royal purple oil with a k&n filter on my previous car (turbocharged). Expensive that's for sure, but the engine was sparkly clean! Some people swear that once they switched over to royal purple, they spun a bearing. Never had an issue. Supposedly, their oil filter is top notch. Sold my car before they came out with their oil filters.

I don't know about the filters, but the oil is very good. I have also seen it at Wal Mart. I don't remember the price, but it is one of the lest expensive places to purchase it.

A lot of the racers i run with use RP and have no complaints. I think you and your car will like it.

I've heard RP has pretty solid cleaning properties. Haven't looked into it mainly because I didn't want to spend the money on RP

RP IS fully synthetic. Would not use it if it wasnt.

I do not recommend using RP. I had the engine in my STi seize a bearing/the engine after running RP for extended service intervals(they claim 12,000 miles extended). It was a little bit of my fault but the oil actually dissipated to the point of engine running low on oil with only 3k miles on the service of the RP at the time. When the Subaru dealership broke the engine down they said there was only about a quart of oil in the engine. That said, turbo engines can not run synthetics like NA engines can and should be checked regularly. So if you are going to run it check it every 1,000 miles and don't try to run the oil past the OEM suggested service interval for synthetic oil.
I swore by RP until my incident. I have been using Mobil1 in my truck since then and now my bike has Amsoil and will only every have it in it. Amsoil is the original and all testing proves it is the best synthetic overall. Not trying to start an oil war, just giving my experience and hoping others will not suffer the same way I did with RP.

Yeah, i don't think it was really worth it for the price. I just thought "oh, more expensive so maybe its better!" My TL with m1 fully synthetic and m1 or purolator p1 filter is just as clean! However, its a comparison between a turbocharged and n/a vehicle.

I've heard similar experiences. Makes me curious because it's recommended to use traditional oil during a turbo engine break in period, then switch to synthetic. I've had no issues using Mobil1 5w-30. Although, Honda recommends 10w-30 for my car, but with the turbo and known oil pump issues, I went one step thinner, especially for having cold weather here.

darn, the PB here are either all closed or in the really bad part of town.
