Rupes acquires Cyclo Toolmakers

Re: Rupes aquires Cyclo Toolmakers

...it also misses the fact that it allows FIAT to eliminate US- (Chrysler-) designed vehicles and introduce Americanized versions of their own cars.

Not that I'm defending/endorsing the acquisition of US companies by foreign ones, but that's not really fair to Fiat, is it? What is the life-cycle of a vehicle design today? And I could argue the "Chrysler-designed" vehicles that are being supplanted are actually "Daimler-designed", but regardless, at some point existing vehicles are going to be redesigned, so in the spirit of globalization, as all car co's today exercise it, it would be only logical for new Chryslers to be Americanized Fiats. And come on, some of us are nostalgic for 124's, 131's, and X1/9's.

Re: Rupes aquires Cyclo Toolmakers

we are talking about a real niche here. "synergies" with corporate raids and multi-billion dollar mergers can be very different than "synergies" with relatively small time niche tool makers. Carl Icahn is not going to be sniffing around this deal hahaha

in a relatively short amount of time, Rupes has made quite an impression in the US. it's amazing, actually. so, it makes sense for the market for them to figure out an effective way to stabilize aspects of their stateside business with such a deal.

and i know there are is a market for Cyclo stuff but i never understood the need for that tool/concept. i know it's viable but it seems like it's less efficient/advanced than pretty much every other competitive tool. basically...it seems super dated. that's my impression - i don't expect a bunch of people to defend it or something, again, i know it has a following and i'm sure there are reasons people love it.

Re: Rupes aquires Cyclo Toolmakers

The auto and plane polisher market may be a niche, but Rupes has been producing high quality industrial tools and machinery for the better part of 70 years and distributing them throughout the world.

Except not here.

Yeah, it really was an anachronistic tool, I know something changed in recent years because they seemed to be trying to update things (you know, variable speed, Velcro backing plates instead of those crazy boots, all the mod cons). I went and read the corporate history and they were acquired in 2003, which would coincide with the modernization which started a few years later.

I'm guessing this is a successful culmination to that business plan, to be subsumed into Rupes for a nice profit.

it's super duper niche here. their presence stateside has been largely relegated to importing polishers for paint correction. that's almost as niche as an etsy shop relative to the discussion above about Chrysler, lol.

that's how i feel as well.

Re: Rupes aquires Cyclo Toolmakers

I already agreed, polishers were super duper niche (see my airplane-polishing joke above) here. I can't imagine the factory in Longmont is huge, but it's safe to say that it gives Rupes an established beachhead here for expansion, and not just the automotive polisher line.

Re: Rupes aquires Cyclo Toolmakers

LOL, I don't know how you do all this on a dial-up, Bob...

Re: Rupes aquires Cyclo Toolmakers

CJ, FCA is a pretty good analogy, but it also misses the fact that it allows FIAT to eliminate US- (Chrysler-) designed vehicles and introduce Americanized versions of their own cars. The 500 is made in Mexico at the old PT Cruiser plant, the Dart is based on the slightly smaller Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the new 200 is based on the same platform (as is the new Cherokee) and built in the upgraded Sterling Heights plant that eliminates the need for 30% of the plant's US workforce.

Yes, synergies is a bean counter buzz word. An optimist would say they hope it means both original companies benefit from the merger, and grow and flourish. A cynic would suggest a dilution of the acquired company's strengths in order to benefit the acquiring company.

:iagree: I was on the short end of the stick with 2 company buyouts....not fun!! Again, that is why I started my own business and have never looked back.

The only thing is HOPEFULLY there will be something to be gained by the consumer in the long run....again, hopefully.

Re: Rupes aquires Cyclo Toolmakers

Genial!

To Rupes, if you're after a good project to start with I can send you my prototype, here, for free.

Hope you enjoy:

I've called it Cyclo21.

Kind Regards.

Re: Rupes aquires Cyclo Toolmakers

Builthatch, have you ever used a Cyclo? The dual heads make it the most balanced polisher on the market. I own several polishers and that is the only one that doesn't leave my hands vibrating after an hour. Maybe I'm just old but the comfort factor is the reason I tend to reach for it more then any of my others. No it won't do much correction but what DA really does? Its great at putting down a nice shine and is completely dummy proof. I can hand it to my newest employee with complete confidence he won't hurt the paint, short of dropping the machine on the hood. Plus the versatility of the dual 4 inch pads mean with just a twist I can go from a 4 in wide to an 8 inch wide pad with out even turning the machine off. Plus the brush attachment are great.
This is the reason this machine has been around for so long and I hope will stick around.

I may be slow, but I do poor work.

Re: Rupes aquires Cyclo Toolmakers

There's a video from 2012 of a south american detailer called Billy Martinez using the Cyclo with wool pads (correction) to foam pads (polishing and finishing) demonstrating perfect results in the end.

Good demonstrative video of the tool - which seems to be awesome (I never used / saw one). Definitively great stuff.

Always interesting to see what our regular forum members think... I'm an optimist by nature and I'll stick to what I posted in my first post to this thread,

I see a bright future for both companies.

That's based on a lot of thing but I could base it on one historically fact and that's both companies have a time-proven history of building high quality tools that endure the test of time.

I know Cody for years and he's the real deal as a professional business man and also passionate about the car industry.

know Guido and his entire team including his son who are both engineers for the Rupes company.

These men are long term thinkers and they too have a time-proven history of guiding their companies through the decades, (filled with all types of economic turmoil), and continue to be successful today.

Meet Guido Valentini the Presidente of Rupes
