I am quickly approaching the purchase of my first Rupes polisher. It will be a Mark II. I am undecided if it will be a 15 or 21mm throw. I plan to use it on cars, but I plan to use it on my 36' 5th Wheel. I presently have a 3401, and also a PE8. This will be my first non forced rotation machine. I need some input on if the 21 is too much for most car applications, curves etc.

I think that the 21 will suit your needs for a long throw machine. It does have learning 'curve' on curved panels, but you will get the hang of it. I also think that the extra ground covered with the 21 vs the 15 will assist you in working on your 5th wheel---that's a lot of real estate to cover!

I would go with the 21. It has more power. Especially going from a 3401 to the long throw. There is going to be a learning curve. The more powerful machine should make it easier. You'll cover more ground with the 21 and a 6 1/2 inch pad. I don't know about the 5" backing plate on the Rupes, but on my G21 with the Boss white fast correcting pad and FCC it will level defects faster than a 3401, and it won't wear you out doing it like the 3401 IMO. Just remember to keep the pad flat to the surface, if the machine stalls even though you think it's flat on the panel it probably isn't. This will take some practice, especially with curved panels. Once you get it down you'll love the machine. Also remember to let the machine do the work, you won't need the downward force like you do on other DAs.
 
If you already own an 8mm short throw 3401 for tight spots it just makes more sense to get a 21 for larger areas, that way you covered.

Love my 21mk2! I have 3401 as well. Just worked on hard as nails paint and it out corrected the 21mk2 with a B&S uro-wool pad. Most times, however, the mk2 is faster- especially on your 5th wheel. You'll like the smooth feel of the rupes!
 
What all you guys are saying confirms what i was thinking. The RV is so big that it makes sense to cover as much ground as possible. I did the RV before with the 3401 and its just a mankiller. Im anxious to try the Rupes. Thanks for the help.

After watching these videos, and talking to my friend at the local body shop, who is a great detailed himself, I ordered the MarkII 15 mm today. I also order a supply of pads and compound. I think it's time to recover my wife's Volvo. Lookin forward to it.
