So I got shingles in June and still have postherpetic neuralgia. Mine was in my leg nerve, so all through my hip and leg. Terrible pain, I must say. I took two rounds of antiviral meds which really helped stop the rash and help it go away quickly. It's supposed to help reduce the likelyhood of tostherpetic neuralgia pain, but so far hasn't helped me, unfortunately. My summer has been sh!t so far, but I was able to wash my car this past weekend and that was good for my mental state. The pain meds make me wobbly and feeling zapped of energy, but at least I can function now. I just thought I'd pass along that if you're old (like me), you might want to think about getting the shingle shot lol. My doc says you can get shingles more than once so in 6 months, I'm gonna get the vaccine! Hopefully my lingering nerve pain will be going away soon.

Did he suggest you do that? My understanding was that having an outbreak "inoculated" you for a while, I think the Dr. said 10 years. Of course if the vaccine gives you life-long protection, then you could do it right away, but I vaguely remember hearing mixed advice on that, some sources saying it lasted for the rest of your life, some saying some limited amount of time.

Either way, it's nothing to fool with, based on your experience, and a guy I used to work with had an outbreak on his face and didn't realize what it was and it got into his eye and he lost some vision from that eye...so, as you say...NOT COOL. If you get the vaccine, make sure you go back for the second shot.

PS My mother has had shingles twice, and I know someone else and have heard of others who have had it more than once, so it happens, of course that was before they came out with the vaccine. Oh, and glad you are on the mend.

Wife had it a couple of years ago. Having had neuropathy for a decade and a half, it’s not fun either. Feel better

I mentioned to him that I had planned on getting it "sometime soon" lol. I told him I figured I had time. :ROFLMAO: He said if I decide I want to get it now to wait at least 6 months. The same thing happened to a friend of mine who's a little older than me. Got it on his face and into his eye. Luckily, he did not have long term issues after having it. He ended up getting the vaccine about a year ago. He said he didn't feel great for about a day, but said it was nothing like dealing with shingles. I think having to get the second shot was what kept me putting it off because I felt like I would have to "take time to plan it out". Sure wish I'd have planned it out lol.

I don't remember having any side effects from the first shot, other than I had the sorest arm I have ever had from a vaccine. I never got around to getting the second one, you're supposed to get it between 2-6 months after the first one, which I had "planned" on doing right at 4 months, but...life, etc. I finally got it a little more than 3 years after the first.

Man that's awful. The docs I saw kept saying "it's a low percentage of people who have beyond a month of onset", but that's not my experience in talking with the peeps I know lol. Hope your Dad's nerve pain moves on soon!

I got the shots. Two of them. Its been said one could still get shingles even if you get the shots but it will be much less severe.

Cheers Mate! Yeah he was fine one day then went fishing and had a bite mark near his eye, and thought maybe a mozzie got him.

And after that he looked like the elephant 🐘 man all swollen up,
I ended up getting chickenpox from him.

My mum got the shot and knocked her about for a week with flu like symptoms.

Did you get the shingles vaccination? Now that you've had chicken pox you could get shingles at some point.

I don't know if I've ever had chicken pox, and mum doesn't remember me ever having it, doesn't sound like fun.

They told me at the docs office when they said I had shingles that it was very contagious. I stayed home for a couple weeks until the rash scabbed over. Luckily my wife had gotten the shingles vax 2 years earlier. Also, I remember hearing years ago the chicken pox was a much worse for adults than what kids experienced. That sucks you had to find that out in real life lol.

All the best!!!!

I picked it up on half my face in 2014. I was stressed over ordering a new Corvette. The 15 second "ice pick" headache thru my ear once a day was the worse followed by Ramsay Hunt face droop that went away after a week. My wife mentioning that she would have to drive the car home from the museum was the best drug to shake it off.

Get the Shot NOW!!!!!
