2 of our cats are bigger bodied cats in general, but at one point they got to be overweight because for years they had full access to hard food whenever they wanted it. Year and half ago we stopped the free grazing and got them on a feeding scheduale of 2 times a day hard food and once a day soft food at bedtime. Little over a year ago we got them automatic feeders. Programmed 2 feeding times for them and the portions that they need not what they want. Petlibro was the brand from the big river.
Both lost the excess weight and are way more playfull, with so much more energy.
Juat sharing as maybe a idea for ya

We've had the same conversation with my sister in law recently. Our boy Rocky has access to food all day, but it's dry food, he does get two wet food satchels, but they're only 50g each, which is about 1.7 ounces. She is adamant that he shouldn't be able to access food all day, because their cat doesn't know when to stop eating and the vet said he's overweight. Rocky has been the same weight for years, very stable at around 11-12lbs.

This is Max who we had previously, he also had access to food all day, he was a bigger, longer boy, only had half a tail though, at his heaviest he weighed 15.5lbs, but he also knew to when stop eating.
