1. Yep, it's best to do small sections. The application is tricky and takes some effort to get good with.
2. I highly suggest a foam applicator--
Where do you find these applicators and are they 4" in diameter?the blue/red foam hex pads (not found on AG) or the Pinnacle/WG Polishing Pal are the best. These are good back ups too:
German wax applicators, P21s 100% Carnauba Wax Applicators, foam wax pads or
Wolfgang German Polish N’ Wax Applicator has two sides of premium foam in one awesome applicator!. You will need an applicator that makes full/flat contact with the paint surface as you apply. Cleanmycorolla has had success with a MF applicator block as well.
3. Buff off immediately, don't wait or you will have to reapply to "reactivate" and then buff off. It behaves a lot like a coating, but it's a little more forgiving--I applied outdoors at dusk and had no issues.
