sooo..How is subaru paint?

Investing in a Master Blaster would be very useful as well. Are you getting the sedan or hatchback? I have always wanted an STI.
I already have a blower..I am getting a sedan..not a fan of hatchbacks

this is the car I am getting..the pic doesnt really show the paint well..its little darker then this and looks alot better

I made my own mud flaps to save money if anyone wants dimensions and design I would be happy to repost.plus I'm a member of a suite called Cincinnati Subarus • Index page a bunch of good guys that are a wealth of information!

+1 Mud flaps are a must! I've had great luck with all of the subaru sites that I have been a part of; 3GWRX has a lot of great info for the 08+ models. I almost went with DGM, it is a sweet color. Good Luck!

If I really liked a car with paint like this, I would only buy white or silver.

Absolutely. I had a customer come in the other day with a Subaru that had a champagne color. He wants a full correction, and was pretty stern on that decision.

I was honest, and told him that Subaru paint will not last long with a correction. Not too mention, the color will mask any defects anyways. Nope...doesn't matter. He wants it done, period.

Fine with me! :dblthumb2:

i would NEVER own a plain silver car..you might as well just drive around in bare metal or have a sticker that says yep I am bland. I am use to dealing with jello soft paint so its not gonna be a huge switch for me but I wouldnt not choose the color I want cause of it.

I had an 05 STi and never noticed the paint being overly soft, however, on the NASIOC forum people are constantly complaining about the newer Subies being "so soft the wind mars it." That said, I would have Opti-Coat ready and waiting and order a full 3M paint protectant kit for every leading edge of the car, especially the hood, front facia, and fender edges.
When you say blower do you mean leaf blower? I would get something that at least has a filter to blow clean air onto the paint. And make sure you Opti-Coat the wheels as well, as the pads Subaru uses are high dusting, at least on my 05 they were.
Congrats!:)

Unless the STIs come with different pads you shouldn't have too much of an issue. My brakes do not dust much and the wheels clean very easily.

I have a 2011 Forester (silver, ha ha!) that I've been washing weekly for a while now. The paint is soft... clear bra would have been a good idea. I've had it for a year and there are a lot of dings from rocks. I did install the Rally Armor flaps though so at least I have some protection for the sides and hatch.

Also, someone hit my car in a parking lot and I took it to a body shop for repairs. I forgot to tell them not to take my car to the nearby auto wash afterwards. Now I've got some swirls on the hood. When I dropped off the car the adjuster seemed to be surprised at how clean my car was and she asked me what I was using to take care of it. I guess I'll have to add swirl remover to the mix.

Nonetheless, car in that pic looks tight, man!:hungry:

no I have a smaller metro blower that I have been using for years.

Are flaps a must to prevent rock chips? Why are they a must. My 2003 without rock chips has picked up some road rash on the lower side panels and I wonder if flaps would help.

Yes they are different as STI comes with Brembo 6 pots front/2 pots back and a much more aggressive pad on both ends as well. Either way with a WRX or STI I would at the least wheel wax the wheels and calipers, if not Opti-Coat them; because once the dust sinters into the wheel finish it is a pain to remove it all. I had to clean my wheels every few days to keep them clean with stock pads on my 05 STI. When I switched to EBC rotors and Yellow Stuff pads, and braided lines, there was a huge improvement in stopping and dusting went way down as well. Man I miss that 05.:(

i usually coat my wheels with Ultima trim and tire guard+

I wouldn't say they are necessarily a must but they help with the dirt flinging back and the rock chips not to mention they make your car look a little lower and meaner...

I'm headed down to Va Beach to visit my parents and hopefully "detail" my Forester for the first time. I ordered a lot of product during holiday sales. Although I wanted to use a sealant on the car I just can't justify spending any more on products until I use up most of what I have.

Edit - it has been detailed twice professionally - the last time in late November. I'd like to do it on my own from now.

My Forester has 13k miles on it and the paint is in good shape. I wash it with ONR and clean the interior every week and a half and it's garage kept.

My plan is to:

Wash

Clay (I have the Meg's clay kit)

Meg's Cleaner Wax with PC and Black/Gray pad

Wax - I have some Liquid Souveran Wax and two small containers of hard/soft wax made by DoDo Juice. Could I just use another gray pad to apply the wax as well or would it be better to use the red? If red, I'll need to order one. I plan to buff by hand.

How does this sound? The Souveran is a sample sized bottle so I'm not sure how long it will last. I'm guessing the Dodo Juice will last 3 or so waxes each. If everything works out I'll take care of my folks cars too. And then I'll give sealant a go.

Great thread! I'm planning to order a '12 WRX Limited in SWP soon too. :dblthumb2:

I have an OBP 05' STI. I love it! It's a PITA to keep clean but looks amazing after a coat of wax. Yes the paint is soft. The main thing is the rock chips you WILL get on the front bumper/hood. Only way to avoid this is clear bra. The front of my car has tons of tiny chips.

Bought the Blackfire product anyway.

Washed
Clay bar
BF Gloss Enhancing Polish with PC.
BF WD

I'm reasonably pleased. This was my first time doing anything beyond washing. I just read the posts here and watched the videos. And read a bit in the the Art of Detailing book.

I'll post more photos tomorrow. No before and after unfortunately. Oh well.
