Tar remover mars paint - what does this mean

I've used stoner's tarminator many times and gone through a number of cans without any issues. It works great and has never marred paint in the past. I will continue to use it as well.

With that said...

I had a clients 1994 range rover last night. It was just purchased used, so no idea if original paint or if it was sprayed somewhere along the way.

There was some weird staining on the fender behind the front wheel. figured I'd try tarminator. worked it a bit with an MF towel (like I normally do) and it marred the paint terribly. was only allowed to dwell for 30 seconds maybe. then I rinsed and the remaining water on the surface was staining the paint in all the area that was sprayed with tar remover.

I fixed that area with m205, although removal of the polish seemed a bit funny (definitely clear coat because pad did not turn color). But what in the world was going on? was something 'wrong' with this clear coat?

any info appreciated. thanks....

Who knows what happened. Just be greatfull you were able to repair it

I wouldn't lay that on the Tarminator. It sounds like strange paint to me. The LR's I've done have had hard clear. BTW, the best deal on Tarminator if you use it a lot is to get it in liquid form in a 5 gal pail directly from Stoner. That's what I did.

yes. 'strange' paint indeed and definitely had me weirded out. was hoping someone could shed some more light on the subject. and as I mentioned, I'm happy with tarminator otherwise and will continue to use it.

funny that you chimed about LR's with hard clear because I found an OLD thread of yours where you commented on a range rover with very soft clear.

I didn't know they offered it in bulk like that. I don't use THAT much. But its good to know its available. thanks.

You know, I was being a lazy bugger and was trying to remember off the top of my senile brain, rather than look one up. I've done a few and was trying to remember my experience with them. I thought I remembered taking wool to one which I usually don't have to do unless it's a pretty hard clear...but I stand corrected. I should be more careful with my comments. Sorry.

you're not that senile. i've been searching old threads. you had one that was super soft, and a different one that was hard and was finishing better with wool than foam.

edit: I just realized this was the same car. I read the 2 threads hours apart. Now I'm even more confused. What is up with range rover paint?

hoping this is a way to generate some more interest in this thread.

photos of the damage in question

i almost looks like when you get degreaer on running boards that are black metal and unfinished. Maybe someone sprayed them with rattle can and the tarminator ate through it?

Was the paint Single Stage?

Sure looks it

I'm at my day job. can't be on the forum constantly

1994 range rover. this is lower portion of left front fender behind the wheel

definitely clear coat

yes it was an easy fix (used M205 - no color transfer to the pad = clear coat). my concern is, what the hell was going on in the first place. Someone with more knowledge about paint systems or more experience may have some info and I'd like to learn something constructive from this

you can see the MF towel marred up the paint bad. and most of those water stains were fresh and created while rinsing off tar remover. it was already stained a bit in that area from who knows what previously

Tar/Asphalt contains little pebbles(rocks). It looks like you scratched the clear up trying to remove the tar

This is my opinion and you've paid what its worth

alright, at the risk of being rude, you're way off. this wasn't a rock or a pebble. this was some sort of chemical reaction. the paint felt 'sticky' as this was happening. the car was washed and clayed. clean car, clean towel. and then the water from rinsing the tarminator stained the paint as well.

I've experienced what you described and this is not what happened here.
there wasn't even tar on the paint. it was a weird type of staining that I believed was on top of the paint although it appears I was wrong.

Perhaps just an unusual reaction with the Tarmintor then?

You can see the horizontal marks from wiping it. Depending on what paint is on there (maybe not factory paint?), it may have been softened temporarily by the solvents in Tarminator. Maybe. It sure doesn't happen on factory clear and I've used it a ton of times. Good thing is it buffed out. I would not let this sour your opinion on Tarminator, I would lay blame to the paint. Still a stange sight though.
