At the risk of a picture rant, I will show these. This client was referred to me after the dealership tried to fix a couple of factory defects. They decided to "buff" the entire truck! After doing quite a few measurements they had taken off almost a full 1.0 to 1.5 mills in several areas. I advised the client I wouldn't touch this truck! We sent him back to the dealer who for some reason sent it to their body shop and you guessed it, they did it again! He then brought it back to me to check as it "looked worse" . Now we have generally have a decrease anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 mills! Some areas measure 2.5 total! So the lesson is know when to say no and walk away! You need to know you cannot fix everything! As of today the situation is in the hands of GM.

And some have ridiculed the value of a PTG, lol.

Judging by the finish, I'm sure you could have gotten it perfect, but with the amount of clear already removed, I would not want to be the last person to touch the paint.

Smart move and thanks for posting.

How do you know they took off 1.0 to 1.5 mils ?

Did you measure it before or you measured a place they didn't buff

As usual they did not do the roof, or the center of the hood.

Dang that's a nice pay day I would love to do that truck.

Why wouldn't you glaze it and at least make it look 10x better and not worry about removing any clear?

That's absolutely horrific work the dealer did, but don't blame GM. They didn't do that. The dealer did.

Fortunately I don't need the work and I don't glaze anything. It's also not what the owner wanted. He wants it fixed so when he washes it , it stays that way. No blame on GM, they are trying to fix the problem.

Yes, in the hands of someone who can't spell rotary!

Hi mike having trouble posting this deosnt stay on.we met last year at detail fest 1772 634 1622 I can fix that if you are not interested thanks,

I'm afraid you have me confused with someone else. I would be interested in knowing how you would fix this especially when in certain areas total film build is 2.5, factory is 5.5?

Good advice for any profession, Mike. It's a skill in itself to know when to do something, but even more important to know when not to do something.

WOW Mike!

Dealers just don't get it... I mean WOW!

I take it you told him your measurements, he told the dealership... then they STILL hacked at it.... AGAIN.

Yeah... looking at it (without a ptg) it'd look like an easy enough fix. Guess that's where they thought "just hit it again Shoeless Joe".

At a loss for words.... just WOW!!!!!

So now that he has half his film build missing, wonder what the GM 'solution' will be?

I know I had Ford paint a rollback for me back n the 80's. They were having problems with it flaking off on the horizontal surfaces on all F series, so they agreed to paint PART of it. Shop manager set me up a date, said they'd keep it a week.

It was flaking on the front of the hood, all the way to the back, along the cowl, and the roof. Thing is, there was NOOOOOOO WAAAAAAAYYYYY I was going to let them get away with just the horizontal surfaces. (Which is what the BS manager said they'd do.)

So that Saturday afternoon I got out a heated pressure washer from a buddy of mine. His would do 5000 PSI, 5 GPM @ 210°. Believe you me... paint was flying off of it like leaves in a windstorm on the bad parts! But the sides were a bit more stubborn, especially the back of the cab. That part took a bit of 'help'. ;) Might have been 'loosened' with the edge of a knife then hit with the pressure washer. :dunno: :D

Drove it to the dealership that Monday morning at 7:00 to meet the shop manager and he said "WHAT THE HE- - did you do?"

I just smiled and said, "Nothing... hand washed all the time is all this puppy ever gets."

Ford even paid for me to go back to the sign shop and have it all re-lettered and re-pinstriped! :props:

What sucks is that this dealer will quick fix, they will barely prep it, barely mask off properly and shoot it with clear that will start peeling off in a year or two.

Have you explained to the customer how this could affec the cars paint in the future? Whether it be burn throughs or even clear coat failure?
