How many here think our elected politicians will come to some sort of compromise at the 11th hour and then pat each other on the back and boast nationally how they worked in bipartisan fashion, "burned the midnight oil", to do what's best for the nation and America?

America as we know/knew it is slipping away . I don't think America is going the way it was intended when it was founded by our forfathers. I don't like being pessimistic but It's going to get worse..... I think we're going over....just my $.02

I am pretty sure we are all scer**d no matter what. Milk may double, wife works for CVS and all prescriptions starting Jan 1 are supposedly going up 15% (Obama care), higher taxes on the rich will raise the prices for all of us (who actually thinks that if the rich pay higher taxes it is not going to trickle down to us). For a guy that has initiated the largest tax increase in our history (Obama Care per the Supreme Court) I do not have much confidence in our survival for a life as we have known it.

Ever since the Health Care Bill has passed med school applications have dropped 30%........

over the cliff!

The America i grew up Knowing and must of us had the chance to live in is slowly becoming deceased. It kind of scary to think of.

Don't count the Fed and the banks out yet! They haven't mortgaged everyone's grand children's grand children yet.

Don't think you are alone, up here in Canada the average debt to wage per person is 152%. Sounds like fractional banking is working to a T.

You have that famous quote by P. J. O'Rourke: "If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it costs when it's free."

About the tax rates: historically, the higher the top rate, the lowest is the weight of the top bracket in the total amount collected (the incentive to find loop-holes is much higher when rates go up). In France, for instance, they tried to pass a law (it has already been ruled out as inconstitutional) to tax at 75% the amount above 1 million Euros - Gerard Depardieu immediatly got a residence visa in Belgium...

I think we're going over at 90mph. I don't think certain politicians are even serious about making a deal. If you make 50k-75k your taxes are set to go up $2316.

Sucessful people getting punished....no incentive for the future dreamers out there, so where's all the money going to come from for all the handouts or "freebies". No matter how you look at it, the governement doesn't produce anything to get their money, they get it one way and you know what that is! Once people "take their ball and go home", well, that's when all hell's going to break loose IMO!

I can't believe this is happening. I am so disgusted with the government right now.

I will live in the U.S.A. But I think my money will live in a different country.

We've already gone over the edge. Now we're just formally recognizing it. And for the record all of them have had a year to deal with the one year Bush Tax Extension but campaigning must have been more important.

When the Bush Cuts expire we are going back to Clinton's Tax Plan it's NOT Bush's!

It's a total mess, the shine is long gone.

You guys are showing your age, when Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980, the top federal tax rate was 78%. In case your history is a little rusty, "future dreamer" companies like Microsoft, Apple, Berkshire Hathaway, Intel etc. were all started before 1980. I'm sure Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were "dreaming" of making enough money to have to pay 78% in taxes.

I'm sorry, but the idea that raising the top rate from 34% from 38% is somehow going to cause people like Warren Buffet, or even me, from starting our own businesses or continuing them, and instead going to work at Wal-Mart, is ludicrous. I'm sure when Andy Grove and the others were working at Fairchild Semi and kicking around the idea of starting Intel, I'd bet my left nut none of them were grousing about how much taxes they would have to pay if they became millionaires ("you know guys, I'd really like to start a company with you so we can all become millionaires, but then I'd have to pay a lot of taxes, so I'm out...")

I know that my agency and other fed agencies have been told that we may be furloughed 1 day a pay period. We are already on several spending restrictions that are hurting enforcement .

Gonna have to detail cars on those days to make up the difference.
