The Cliff

The President expects compromise from everyone except himself. The revenue created from raising the top rate from 34% to 38% will barely make a ding in the deficit. Other than making political hay with a gullible base, what' s the point? You'll always get way more revenue by taking a little from many than alot from a few. Trickle up poverty is on the way.

You guys are showing your age, when Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980, the top federal tax rate was 78%. In case your history is a little rusty, "future dreamer" companies like Microsoft, Apple, Berkshire Hathaway, Intel etc. were all started before 1980. I'm sure Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were "dreaming" of making enough money to have to pay 78% in taxes.
...")

You forgot to mention the most important part EVERYTHING was deductible back then so the effective rate was really much lower. How fair is it for the lowest tier currently at 10% to increase to 15%. The top tier was at 39.6% for individuals and 40.3% for corporations before the tax cuts.

It will be interesting to see where they set the income limits for each of the rates because that is the other variable.

The lack of a deal so far is primarily political posturing.

The Republicans do not want to do anything that can be used against them in 2 years about "raising taxes" (live by the sword, die by the sword) and the Democrats are going to use what they believe is public opinion that taxes on upper income should be increase (the Dems show flexibility on the income level) to force Republicans to deal. It would be easier to hide behind going off the cliff, letting taxes rise, then taking credit for reducing taxes later, and blame the other side.

If it were easy, either party could have proposed a *detailed* budget identifying the cuts but it is a game of chicken of who gets to claim victory after the deal.

The cliff is actually more balanced than most ideas (everyone pays). So, that new iphone, HD TV, etc. will have to wait a year or two for some.

I know that my agency and other fed agencies have been told that we may be furloughed 1 day a pay period. We are already on several spending restrictions that are hurting enforcement .

Gonna have to detail cars on those days to make up the difference.

Same with us. We have been talking furloughs or RIFS yet but spending restrictions are killer.

America as we know/knew it is slipping away . I don't think America is going the way it was intended when it was founded by our forfathers. I don't like being pessimistic but It's going to get worse..... I think we're going over....just my $.02

:iagree: X 10

Taxes raised on the upper class will fund the government 8 days. The government does not have a tax problem it has a spending problem.

Higher taxes will push more people on the fringe towards a government funded life, enslaving more to the need the government. Survival is now dependent on the government, thus it's easier to overlook the fact that they are taking away all of your freedoms, whatever your pleasure is.....

The best way to grantee party control is to have 51% of the voters on government assistance but then again you'll no longer have a democracy.... Socialism

At least my car will look good as I drive down the road to serfdom.

Boy, I guess you guys didn't have social studies in grade school.

The best way to guarantee party control is to have 51% of the voters on government assistance but then again you'll no longer have a democracy.... Socialism

When you have elections, and 51% vote one way and 49% the other, that's called democracy, it doesn't become socialism just because you're in the minority.

At least my car will look good as I drive down the road to serfdom.

That's feudalism, where you have serfs and lords...and isn't that pretty much what we have already?

:iagree:or down in the hole.

And our current state of affairs:
Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc'-ra-cy) - a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

Explain to me how this works again...I'll presume by "produce" that you mean make something. So I own a manufacturing plant that "produces" someething. I have employees that are "makers". So I "take" their jobs and ship them to China, so now I am not a producer anymore, and neither are they. I have plenty of wealth because I pay Chinese workers 1/8 of what I paid my workers here, but now my US workers have become "takers" because I put them on unemployment, but I'm a hero to...a government employee like yourself whose entire salary/benefit package is paid by taxes?

These F$%^en politicitions don't give a rats A$$ on the countries furture. The will just vote themselfs pay increases, and better benefets.
If they were in the private sector they would be sent to prison, for what they have done the last 20 years.
I'm glad I'll be dead in about 30 years...cause this country will no longer be.
