The Cliff

You guys are showing your age, when Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980, the top federal tax rate was 78%.

And the Fed rate was 14%, a good rate on a mortgage was 20%.

Why? Because it was good for the country in the long run.

Right now neither the people nor the politicians have the stomach to do whats right for this country in the long term.

Look in the mirror - are you willing to start fixing the budget deficit, if it means saving up for 5 years to buy a TV, or 10 years to buy a car?

Are you willing to forgo your SS benefits if your retirement income is 'sufficient' ? How about pay for your own medical care after age 65 if you can afford it?

99% of the population is not willing to make any sacrifices, they all want the other people to bear the pain.

Then they point the blame at the politicians that they elected, who are doing what their constituents want.

Boy, I guess you guys didn't have social studies in grade school.

When you have elections, and 51% vote one way and 49% the other, that's called democracy, it doesn't become socialism just because you're in the minority.

That's feudalism, where you have serfs and lords...and isn't that pretty much what we have already?
Greece, Spain, Portugal. Those are democracies. Power to the people baby. Do we have to let things get so bad before we wake up? It's probably too late already.

I'm looking in the mirror, and besides seeing that I need a haircut, yes, I'm willing to pay more taxes for the good of the country. I kept my last car 16 years, and my last TV 22 years, so I'm good on the other part.

We don't have a democracy, we have a representative republic. Too many politicians have that confused.

The problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other people's money. It hasn't worked anywhere it was implemented.

When the majority of the people discover they can take from the public trust, you will have the end of the republic.

How can that animated graphic be sent to Colbert or Stewart?

I agree, it's great!!

Yes, you're quite right, and too many citizens also have that confused, thanks for correcting me. Another confusing word is socialism, which many people toss around without really understanding the meaning of.

Well said.

I like a healthy discussion and hate to see threads go south and then get closed. Usually the fastest way to start a Flame War on a discussion forum is to bring up the topics of,

Politics
Religion
Car Wax (What's the "best" wax)

So please everyone, do discuss but don't dis your fellow forum members. The fact that we are all hanging out on a "detailing discussion forum" means we likely have more in common than we have differences.

I personally love my country and I love to talk about politics, religion and car wax but do my best to only talk about car wax on this forum.

When typing out a reply to a thread like this one if even for an instant your instincts make you question what you're about to post... take a moment and walk outside and take a breath of fresh air and clear your thoughts.

Make sure what you're about to post is really that important. And if you have any doubts, go with your instincts.

[Satire]: How to Refrain from Posting

Explain to me how this works again...I'll presume by "produce" that you mean make something. So I own a manufacturing plant that "produces" someething. I have employees that are "makers". So I "take" their jobs and ship them to China, so now I am not a producer anymore, and neither are they. I have plenty of wealth because I pay Chinese workers 1/8 of what I paid my workers here, but now my US workers have become "takers" because I put them on unemployment, but I'm a hero to...a government employee like yourself whose entire salary/benefit package is paid by taxes?

I didn't write the definition, so I don't know the authors absolute meaning or intentional meaning, what I do know is that my interpretation of the definition does not reflect the example you presented in your post. (I am not going to go any further on this point on AGO, although your point is valid :props:)

However, I do feel that in America there is a growing movement towards complete lack of accountability for self, autonomy, and personal responsibility for actions or lack thereof, with a growing sentiment towards a sense of entitlement of everything and earning nothing.

As far as my entire salary/benefits being paid for by taxes, the agency I work for was the primary source of revenue for the US government for over 100 years after its creation and was self-sustainable without any tax money. Although this is no longer the case, we still collect a substantial amount of revenue for the government through commercial/personal duties(tariffs), administrative fees and fines, administrative/criminal seizures, criminal fines, forfeitures.....etc.

I’m the guy sitting in a car for 12 hours in the wee hours of the morning, following a guy, with a bunch of other guys through Hudson and Essex Counties who wants to blow something up in NYC. I don’t think the average tax payer has a problem with paying my salary, or at least half of it. :dblthumb2:

Even tho they (Congress) can not come to terms. They recieved a pay raise by executive order.

Just remember, "What is the opposite of progress? Congress"

Our politicians and many of our citizens no longer care if we are a light to the rest the world nor do they understand how to shine even if they wanted to. There was once a collective understanding of what “greatness” was and what it looked like but now the U.S.A. is suffering because of too many ideologies and a government that has, by and large, cast aside the declarations that made this the greatest nation on earth. We are slowing but surely just blending in with the rest of the world and the almighty dollar is now our king. So sad.

This clip has some harsh language (a couple of f-bombs) so don’t watch it if that offends you.

Yeah, I know we need you guys, but while you're driving through those counties past all the vacant factories, or luxury condos etc where there used to be factories, where now live people who work in the financial "industry", whose only product is making money for themselves by pushing other people's money around and manipulating markets and government. There used to be people working in those factories making more money than they make now at their part-time service jobs, and therefore paid more taxes.

Let it be noted:
I've had well over a calendar year to fume and try to make heads-or-tails about the:

"The Budget Control Act of 2011"...Pub.L. 112-25; 125 Stat. 239...

That was passed by the current 112th United States Congress, and subsequently signed into Law by then,
as well as current, President Obama. (effective date: August 2, 2011)

Therefore...
I've decided to not allow my: Knickers to get into a bunch...worrying about the "Fiscal Cliff"...
that was 'strategically-negotiated' into the above referenced Act.

Anyway...
I voiced my belly-aching towards many Politicians at my polling location back in November 2012.

You know, we can still turn it all around, and go back to being the greatest nation on the planet, where hard work, honesty, integrity and accountability still drive us. From reading all of these posts, it is quite clear a few have different ideas on how to go about it, but ALL of US agree it needs to change.

Personally, I would like to see us do away with the party system, where all elected members do is support the party ideals. Enough of that BS, I want individuals to think for themselves.

Our politicians have become nothing more than self serving weasels, WE need to take our country back while we still can. I just don't know how to do it.

Term limits! I don't want any Senator or Congressman in office for more than two terms, just like the President. After two terms he/she is out and have someone new elected to office. They see themselves as some sort of Federal employee with life long tenure and even Federal retirement pensions but that was not what was intended when our government was founded.

When you are there forever you start to owe certain people and special interest groups because you need them if you want to stay in office year after year. It is naive to think that they can be simply voted out because redistricting and big money from special interest groups trumps the individual vote every time. An incumbent has to really screw up before he is thrown out of office and the longer he or she is there, the harder it becomes to get rid of them.

The founding fathers did not want our kind of a sitting assembly - the job of representing the people was never meant to be a career and means of livelihood.

Ever since the Health Care Bill has passed med school applications have dropped 30%........

over the cliff!

If you are smart enough to be doctor, why not be a hedge fund manager, where you can make way more money.

The best and the bright have not gone medical school for years, they go to Wall Street where the money is.
