Thinking about trading in the CR-Z for a Fiat 500 Abarth, thoughts?

I would suggest skipping the BOV if the vehicle has a Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) which it most likely has instead of a Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP). A BOV will vent metered air which will cause the engine to stumble slightly between shifts.

And look into a tune. I'm not sure whats available (if anything) for the Abarth but since its a Turbo vehicle, i'm sure a tune would be well worth the money.

Well I saw a guy on one of the forums selling an alcanterra shiftboot that also had wheels for sale and had 215's on it. Not the same car but I had 225/45's on my R56, BFG KDW2's, horrible tire @10K, looked great and has smooth sidewalls.

I'm sure I'm going to need more rubber on the road, especially on the Dragon this fall, guess we'll find out. The car has a 3 mode traction control system, full on, push the TC once and it let's you have a little "more" fun and then the last one makes you hold the TC button down for 10 seconds and its full off, I will not be using that mode on the Dragon, don't think I have the skill to do that as I've had no professional training and I'll admit it here to everyone, don't have the balls for it either. That said I do push pretty hard on the Dragon IMO but it probably has more to do with the fact that I know the "nannies" will take care of me!

Nice- I run 215s on the MINI.

I'm sorry I am missing the Dragon with you... I'd love to see how your car handles down there!

We'll miss you and your hubby for sure, I just know you guys are a riot! That said, my wife and I are talking about doing the Million Dollar Highway in 2015, maybe you guys can join us there, come into Chicago the day before we head out and then we can meet up for the 1200 mile drive to get there, lots of driving just getting there but the reward is worth it, google that road!

I'll have to look that one up!

A bunch of my friends are doing MINI Takes the States in July... 4,000 miles in 10 days. Sounds like a blast, but July is a black-out month for me at work.

Not sure what a "black-out" month is but 4000 miles in 10 days, WOW! So is it a 4000 loop or how does that work exactly?

Yeah there's several piggy-back systems and I just ordered the 500 Madness one, seems to be the most reliable, smoothest and reliable, so I went with it. That will be combined with a good SRI, so the car will be transformed into a little beast! Have to check into the various BOVs offered but its on the back burner right now, I can only do so much right now but the plan after the initial modding will be one perf mod per year, probably wait on the pulley as I can wait for the belt replacement that happens with that mod, so I'm going to say the modded TB will be next year, time will tell.

Black out means I cannot take time off from work during that time.

No loop- it's going from San Diego to Boston, stopping in a different city every day.
Some people are even driving out to the start point before it even starts!

Too much driving for me- I need beach time on my vacation :D

That's a cool trip but more than 4000 miles depending where your coming from, in your case it would be what, 8000 miles?! In cars like ours we'd really earn our stripes for sure, LOL! The Million Dollar Highway aka route 550 is about 1200 miles from me, one way and just there and back is what I did on my honeymoon last fall doing the Dragon, Charahola Skyway, Moonshiners route all the way to GA as well as driving to the Devil's Triangle, so doing the MDH run would probably be about 3000 miles. Its hard to get another couple to go as our friends have kids in shool but it would be better to have another couple or two to do that run. I saw a show on some cable channel called "Dangerous Roads" and the MDH came up, so it peaked my interest. Elevation goes to 10K+ and parts of the road have NO guard rails as there's no where to put the sign! The scenery is stunning and like I tell everyone about the Dragon, drive it like Grandma is in the car the first time, so I'll be doing just that while doing this run! As you know Monica and anyone else who's done the Dragon its like a long autoX track, point and click and not too much shifting or high speeds due to how many curves there are, so IMO the Dragon would be safer than say the MDH run because of the elevation and grades that come along with it, speed and momentuem are a BAD combination while on a road like the MDH or Cherahola Skyway for instance.

I can't wait to go out and hustle the new car out there this fall!

It's way too long for me... the MINI is not a good long distance, highway car. Most of the mods I've done have made it a very harsh ride, and more are on their way (insert mwahahahahaha laugh). The 1st Gens were a hard ride to begin with- you can't compare the ride to the 2nd Gen.

You are definitely right about the Dragon... I stay in 2nd for most of it. Doesn't seem fast, but it is plenty for that road... and it helps that I have a high revving car.

Cherohola was fun- that is a fast road.... our group was averaging 80 thru it.

And FYI- my husband hit 127 on Hell Bender

I couldn't agree more about the MINI (R53) not being a good highway car. At my old job back home before I moved out to Chicagoland my then boss flew me down to West Palm Beach to drive a modded R53 back to Detroit. This car had a full Cosworth tune, coilovers, 40 series summer tires and a fixed Sparco race seat, good thing the guy was only a few inches taller than me, LOL! Talk about a stiff ride, even going through FLA, GA and Tenn you could tell. I drove that car all the way to Sweetwater TN, hmm, wonder why I stopped there, LOL! Got there at 2:30 a.m. and asked for a wake up call at 6:30 a.m. where I drove to Tellico Plains TN for breakfast, hmmm, wonder why I went there, LOL! I proceeded up the Cherahola Skyway and started to notice snow on the shoulders (it was a week before Easter) and just about to the NC state line came around that corner and for about 30 ft both lanes were covered in slush....EEEEEK! Got on the clampers, pulled over and went back down where I came from because the elevation was only going to get higher and I had no idea what it was going to be like. Temps went from 53 to 33 too. Tried to go all the way around to get onto the Dragon but the rockslide wasn't cleaned up and the road was still closed, so no go there either!

Then driving into the midwest came the stiff suspension rearing its head, horrible, so yeah, modded MINI and long drives....tough! The R56 was pretty comfortable but unreliable but that's a story for another day!

Oh I remember that story!!!!!!!
To drive the Dragon with slush on it would be terrifying!

Yes, you you know why I'd never do one of these MTTS.
LOL- I'd show up with the truck.... waaaaaay nicer ride.

But why have the MINI? My daily commute is 3 miles each way of twisty backroads :dblthumb2:
I refer to it as my little Dragon commute.

Its a short drive to work for you Monica and its great that its twisty and I remember you saying you drive the sheet out of it in that time too, I guess by the time you get to work there's no condensation in the engine and/or exhaust, LOL!

My drive to work is almost 13 miles, 80% highway and I put the cruize on 60 mph and head out. We have a little twisty road here called Bluff Road, its actually on that Motorcycle road website and its pretty short, about 2 miles but its something!

It is short... I make the most of it though :righton:

I'm most fortunate to have the best of both world :xyxthumbs:

First trip to the dealership today........

Found out the original oil was never changed and the car was built 12/12, so its over a year old, so I drove up to Wisconsin to where my buddy works and their doing an oil change and tire rotation. Also having them change out the headlights and fog bulbs to Nokya hyper yellow ones. I did notice the headliner coming apart a little on the d/s A-pillar, so its going to be replaced under warranty, Fix It Again Tony....I hope not, LOL!

The tread depth was checked too, 8/32nds in the rear and 7/32nds up front, I forgot how perf tires don't come with as much tread as "regular" tires do. The car has 2611 miles on it right now. I'm sure they'll be fine when I hit the Dragon this year but will be replaced before the 2015 trip for sure. Already thinking about high perf all seasons and since Continental DWS is being replaced by the ControlContact and not available in my size I'll be looking long and hard at the Michelin Pilot A/S sports. I figure that for only 1 week of the year I really push the car hard and although not as high perf as the tire that's on the car now is, I'm sure they'll be fine, besides, the snow tires will keep the wear and tear down on my 3 season set up as well.

Hopefully all your issues get sorted out at the dealer no problem.

As far as the DWS are they really being replaced? They were on my list of tires to look at when my Cooper Zeons bite the dust. I was also looking at the Pilot Sport A/S and General G-Max AS-03

You couldn't even do headlight bulbs by yourself??? :) Thanks for calling me back by the way!

Ahhh, issues at the dealership. Well I had NO issues with the dealership today at all, free oil change courtesy of my buddy and he even offered to install my head and fog bulbs in for me, but this is where things went south. My owners manual states I've got H1 headlight and H11 fogbulbs, so I pre-ordered these. Come to find out, the headlight AND fog bulbs are the same number, so I told them to just install the fogs, bad idea as the entire front bumper has to come off to do this, I didn't know this until after they installed them. I asked for a favor but would never expect anything like that, no matter what. Then come to find out one of the bulbs doesn't work, so I've got one working and one not working foglights now. To make matters worse I had to hustle to get to work in time which I did. I felt bad because my buddy took it upon himself to just go ahead and have the tech do this, I would've rather just kept the OEM bulbs in there had I known it would be this much work.

So then I contact the Ebay vendor I bought the bulbs from and things got better for me. He said to send him the bad bulb back, as well as the H1 bulbs for a refund, I explained the situation to him and he understood completely. So I ordered 2 more pairs of H11's, will have my other buddy install them as he's pretty good at removing bumpers and lives 9.8 miles away, so then I'll have matching yellow bulbs. I bought Nokyas because of past experience with them but I see PIAA has them too, 3x's the price! Now I know they make good stuff but I wonder, can there really be a difference between Nokya, PIAA and Hella (Optilux), the latter were about $30.00 shipped. I also have the parking lights which are kinda white, wonder what I should do about them before I do this conversion, thoughts on that guys/Monica???

With so many car guys/gals on this site I thought I'd throw this out to the group, its always good to get an outside perspective sometimes, see things that only others can see, so here's the deal.

When I moved here to Chicagoland in Dec of 09' I had an 07' Mini Cooper S and I was leasing it and couldn't keep it as far as buying it but I was able to get a Honda Fit, but I had to "settle" for an automatic or "autotragic" as I like to say, the dealership couldn't find me one, so I took the color I wanted atleast but settled for the auto. It had paddle shifters and it was fun, to a point, but not like having 3 pedals. Fast forward a year and half and 33k miles later, NO issues with the Fit, great car but I decided it was time to get a stick and I test drove the CR-Z and took it, much more fun to drive with the awesome Honda 6 speed, love how it goes into gear and the car itself handles much, much better, plus the mileage is better but not by as much as you'd think. I should also say that I had to roll over neg equity into the CR-Z but it worked out for me. So now flash forward 2.5 yrs later and in that time I've enjoyed the CR-Z, NO issues with the car, mpg as high as 44 mpg but averaging a hair under 40 mpg right now but that's from when I joined Fuely back in July of 2012, mileage during the winter has been around 32 mpg's. In that time the Fiat 500 Abarth came out and I love that car, its all attitude and sounds great and is a hot hatch for the ages! So right now I can get a 12' that's basically loaded w/just under 5k on the clock for $18.5. Now being 2.5 yrs into a 6 year deal w/ the CR-Z, along with the neg equity makes it tough....BUT, with this price, including the neg equity of my car I'd be getting the car for what it costs basically, makes it an easier pill to swallow so to speak. Being an enthusist I made my CR-Z a bit more fun but the Abarth is a TRUE enthusists car, something I haven't had since the Mini Cooper S I had, a car I made more special ontop of that. After a bad day at work walking out to the Abarth would put a HUGE smile on my face and then slip into its red leather seats, take in the smell of that and then fire up that engine...OMG that engine note!

I should also say I've had NO issues with the Honda's I've had, something very important for me, especially coming out of the Mini Cooper S which was the biggest POS, sorry Monica, that I ever had, 3 aux fuel pumps, bad fuel injector, bad MAF, bad timing chain and the throttle would freeze up during cold weather, even after the revision they offered for it. All issues were covered under warranty except for the MAF, that was $660! When it was time to turn the car in I still wanted the car, even after all that because I loved the car and made it my own as many Mini owners do to the car, loved the whole Mini experience, the waves and the smile it too put on my face walking out to the car, I was always excited to drive it, even going home, great drivers car (except for all the issues)

So, based on what I've said here, what's you thoughts guys, reliability or go with your passion?

In my humble opinion, you need to be NUTs to buy a Fiat. If you want to sit at the dealer place once a month fine. There has to be a real car that does not need constant repairs and expensive service.
