Tire Dressings PERL vs Hyper Dressing D170

I am not a professional detailer, but have learned a lot by reading the forms! I do take care of my families vehicles and like to keep them clean. Anyway, I ran out of PB Bold & Bright tire shine and decided to try CG TVD_102 new car shine. I like a bit more glossy and the CG TVD_102 just doesn't provide a shine and really doesn't look like anything is applied. I have been using simple green to clean the tires before applying. After a bunch of reading, I narrowed it down to PERL & HD D170. It looks like PERL will give you a bit more shine than HD. I couldn't find any direct comparisons, but would like opinions. I like the fact that both products have multiple purposes which will help me eliminate some inventory.

I've read many stories of PERL coming off if rained on once or twice. Personally, I'm a fan of Optibond, Gtechniq T1 or 303 tire balm
 
I do use PERL but inside pieces. I tend to agree with howardm4 and use Optibond for my exterior pieces... tires included... pretty amazing... i think i will just stick with it for a while. Like Mike says, find something you like and stick with it...

I don't think so. Maybe in the middle to just shy of the middle of 'glossiness'. If you put on two coats it's a little more gloss. not near as glossy as Griot's Garage Black Shine Tire & Trim coating. And not as glossy as a petroleum-based product but I'd say it's definitely not satin or matte

The tires on my dad's Jeep were done with Opti-Bond

I like PERL on my tires. Deep black, not too shiny. (Goonies pics above while very nice, are just a bit too glossy for my personal taste).

Yes, it only lasts a week or two if it doesn't rain, but I can whip a new coat on my tires with an applicator in mere minutes.

Yup, I used it on my tires and trim and it streaked after a light rain. I'm not a fan of Perl for tires or exterior trim.
 
Goonie, is that 1 coat or 2? Sorta looks too glossy for only one. I personally am a satin-y advocate. I like 1 coat.

That is just the amount of shine I like on my tires. What do you use to apply it? I have read threads of people using flagged tipped brushes. I would like to try that if I knew what a flagged tipped brush is :(

Hi howardm4... that happens to be 2 coats... honestly it was my first use with that product so wanted to see what happened with 2... it is a lot more 'muffled' with just one (1) coats... i kind of like satin'y too but 'dad' likes it shiny... lol... it held up darn well too... still rich in color... not as 'shiny' black, but still rich after most of winter...
 
I like perl only on the inside like a lot of folks on here- also not on tires
My preference for tires is AMMO tire mud gel- its a bit shiney for me- but if you wipe off the excess after an hour or so its pretty nice
Perfect for me after about 2 days-- lasts pretty good also

I apply with some soft sponges from the dollar store. Pack of 6 or so for a dollar or 2...

Carrand Brush & Shine Tire Dressing Applicators, tire brush, tire shine applicator

Or

Boar's Hair Wheel Brush

Or

And forgive me forum folks... Chemical Guys also has a 'Flagged Tip Brush' that technically isn't carried here that works well for tire dressings

I use the green/black Chem. Guys applicator. Lasts about a year on 3 cars.
 
I have PERL and Hyper Dressing on my car right now. I have PERL diluted 1:1 on my front tires and Hyper Dressing diluted 1:2 on the rear. The look is about the same for both. I like a low sheen look, not too glossy, a little more than natural.

I've tested them before and the duration is about the same...depends on the weather. I think you're going to get about the same duration out of most water based dressings.

Solvent based dressings will last longer but I don't like using them. I prefer to use water based.

It doesn't take long to reapply the dressing when needed. I normally reapply tire dressing on my customer's cars every time I do a maintenance wash anyway since I normally clean and scrub the tires.

I would give a slight edge to PERL as far as durability (but not by much), and PERL seems to be a little thicker than Hyper Dressing. Hyper Dressing a little more watery when applying but I think Hyper Dressing is more economical.

IMO, I think either one is a good choice.
 
i have used/had both opti-bond and hyper dressing and since using PERL i no longer use/buy either of them anymore. PERL is one of the best water-based dressings out and will always have a spot in my detailing arsenal...



 
I have had horrible luck with durability with PERL and only use it for interior dressings. I much prefer Hyperdressing at 1:1 for my tires.
 
I used 303 for years but have moved to PERL at 1:1 and have been very happy. For me the durability is in line with other dressings I have used and I like the matte look.
 
I have been using Opti-Bond for the last 5 years. My bottle is finally empty (or just about) ;) As a replacement, I purchased Meguiar's All-Seasons Dressing. It's not water based, and from what I have read here it doesn't sling. Durability should be 10 times that of any water based dressing. Will be able to comment more once I have used it for a while. I like Optibond, but it simply doesn't last. I have had clients tell be it lasted about a week... that's not good ;(
