Tried the Big Red Sponge today...

I never leave my BRS soaking. I mix my Uber or N-914 solution, throw the BRS in it, then give the car the pre-soak and after that squeeze the sponge in the bucket a few times and it’s ready to go. It gets soft immediately after being soaked. I don’t think it hurts to leave it in the bucket all times but I’d rather not leave my solution with hard water in the bucket, I mix, use what I need, dump the rest.

That’s D114 in that bucket. How does that pair with it? Should I have used Uber?

Main point is to have a rinseless that will drop the dirt to the bottom of the bucket. Not sure if D114 will do that.

I guess you'll find out :)

From my experience D114 does not release dirt as good as ONR and thus 2 buckets seems to be a better option for D114. D114 does clean better though. Same with N914.

Now that I remember, I once did a rinseless with only 1 bucket using D114 and the water turned so black midway through the wash that I had to stop and dump the bucket out and refill it with new solution.

So by comparison, does ONR or Uber leave the rinseless solution in the bucket looking like somekind of science project? [with clean water on top and dirty water underneath it]?

I had posted on the optimum Facebook group on a post about the sponge, saturation levels, and it picking up dirt, and Yvan was kind enough to respond (albeit with stuff I’d heard him say before, but it was nice to get some confirmation from him nonetheless.)

He always drives home the point to have it just in the verge of dripping, although I think it could be beneficial to expand and add that if the sponge is too saturated with solution it’ll have no capacity to pick up dirt.. which might seem obvious to some, but my take away was just that it was a waste of product and made a mess. Never occurred to me it had a functional purpose.

So a less saturated sponge is better? That sounds weird, but I guess...

Too much water or too fast and you basically end up w/ a liquid 'wavefront' at the leading edge of the sponge. That just pushes dirt around the surface.

I think capillary action helps pull dirt up into the sponge and away from the surface, but that won't happen if the sponge is too full.

ONR will drop the solid debris to the bottom of the bucket and actually make it stick there. I believe Uber will do the same. Initial testing of Ultima Acrylic seems to as well. GG rinseless floats the dirt on top so not a good fit.

ONR will suspend traffic film in the mix but won't drop it. With too much traffic film, it gets time to replace it. I've probably washed 6-8 cars with a single mix of ONR.

I have a random question about the process of using the Big Red Sponge and ONR.

After you are done with the wash, and the car is dried, and you are saving your ONR/Wash bucket combo for the next wash....what do you do with the BRS??

Do you leave it in the ONR wash bucket to just soak? If so, how long can you leave it in the solution without any ill effects?
Do you rinse it off with water and place it on the shelf to dry for the next time?
Do you just wring it out without rinsing?

Is there really even a correct answer to this?

I don't know if there is a correct answer. I dip the BRS back in the bucket of ONR and then squeeze it out on the ground to clean it out. Then I just put it back in the bucket in the ONR solution for use next time.

"Squeeze it out on the ground"....

Have in mind that I have no experience with WW or RW. Where I live we can get a good quality sponge that looks like a waffel polishing pad at the structure. Would this also work with ONR do you think? Or does the BRS accually keep the bigger particles in the sliced parts of it? And would Ech2o capsulate the dirt as ONR does or is it better to go with mf towels or mf mitts?

Sorry for all the noob question lol. But when you have gone from sponges to mf mitts to get a safer washing and then it's going back to sponge again it gets me wondering a bit. Which methods do you guys feel is the safest way to wash with ONR or any other WW or RW solution?

Ok so I tried the Big Blue Sponge yesterday.

Lots of suds with D114, not an issue though.

I found myself having to rub a little harder than I normally would with microfiber towels in order to get the stubborn grime off of the paint. [could’ve just been due to the vehicle, not sure]

Overall it worked ok. The vehicle I washed wasn’t very dirty though [think Pan the Orginizer dirty]
This is what the water looks like afterwards.

Did it marr? Who knows, the paint is white and I didn’t bother trying to check.

Here’s what my drying towel looks like afterwards.

Did a quick ONR rinseless with the BRS. Didn't feel like pulling it out of the garage to take a picture. Wheels and tires were cleaned with Megs APC and Megs wheel brightener. Tires dressed with CG VRP and wheel wells dressed with Megs Vinyl and plastic aerosol.

I picked up blue sponge to try something new/see how effective the cut cubes work during a wash, but havent had a chance to try it yet. But on a feel test, it is firmer then what I have used for many years, ACE tile and grout sponge which I highly recommend (perfect ONR sponge imo), Soft but not too soft, dense, good fit in hand, durable, gets the job done,no issues on my black paint and under $3.

I haven’t used my Blue Sponge since the 1st time I tried it... I did notice it seemed alot softer after sitting in the rinseless solution for many days.
