US to Announce fusion energy breakthrough

Sounds great. But this is where i stopped. Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant and "clean energy" is a scam. And nothing will be free in this world has things are.

The aim of fusion research is to replicate the nuclear reaction through which energy is created on the sun. It is a “holy grail” of carbon-free power that scientists have been chasing since the 1950s. It is still at least a decade — maybe decades — away from commercial use, but the latest development is likely to be touted by the Biden administration as an affirmation of a massive investment by the government over the years.

Can't help but think of this scene playing out.....

“There is going to be great pride that this is something that happened in the United States,” said David Edelman, who leads policy and global affairs at TAE, a large private fusion energy company. “This is a very important milestone on the road toward fusion energy.”

...still ways to go but this sounds like a pretty big breakthrough.

The world is about to start regretting the ruthless war it has waged against the atom for the last many decades....

Atomic energy was the way forward in the 50s and it always has been. And no one, not even a little old lady that lives down the road from Fukushima, can convince me it is dangerous. Let alone more dangerous than burning coal which is basically gas chambering us all.

Submariners, many of them friends and collogues, spend months under water mere feet away from reactors while sleeping in a sewer pipe. Not a single one has health complications form working in proximity to reactors. No arms growing from their bellies. They can still bare children(though some probably shouldn't lol).

Fission is way easier than fusion, of course, and while fossil fuels can't hold a candle light to fission, fission can't hold a candle to fusion. Ways to go yet but any forward momentum for nuclear energy is good.

I highly recommend anyone curious about the future of nuclear reactors, or possibly having some myths dispelled, to find this guy on youtube @illinoisenergyprof6878 he is an energy professor and worked at Westinghouse for many, many years. He has taught me a lot. I love atom splitting before but he made me fall in love with reactors all over again. My favorite myth he debunked, I think, is the Yuca Mountain Storage Facility. Rumors were the US was just putting all of it's nuclear waste in a mountain to seal it up. False. The fact is that site was never commissioned and is never going to be used. It was another waste of tax dollars. The fact is not a single nuclear powerplant in the US, not even the oldest in commission, has even come close to reaching it's on-site storage limits. There isn't enough being produced(this is a good thing). The storage isn't super dangerous and complex, either. It's a 30ft deep swimming pool basically the "spent" fuel just sits and "cools" in. It isn't glowing either, which seems to disappoint some lol.

I got to go on a tour of Yucca Mountain when I was working on a DOE project in the early 2000s. Quite an impressive undertaking.

As for a waste of tax dollars, that is debatable, as there was a wealth of scientific knowledge generated during the project.

I'm not sure what Yucca Mountain's actual status is these days.

I thought this was what we were gonna talk about when I read title

My good friend worked at San Onofre for over 30 years and had the most incredible stories. His name is Dan and everyone refers to him as RAD DAN (Radio Active Dan) One of the most interesting stories he told me was how UN-inefficient the bombs were, like the ones we dropped on HiROSHIMA. And I haven't thought about it until Putan was threatening (Tactical Nuclear War) And it immediately reminded me of what Dan had explained about the nuclear weapons then vs. now! He described it like 95% of the bomb we dropped was just radio active waste. And only 5% inefficient. And is why so many were effected from radio active poisoning. Compared to today's Nuclear warheads that are 99% efficient and a million times more powerful. So it made me think about when Putan was threatening Tactical nuclear war, he could launch a nuclear BB at Ukraine knowing there would be no nuclear waste/fallout. I know the majority of people just think nuclear war means the end of time as we know it. That's why he state "Tactical nuclear war"

The missles we have now can hit you between the eyes sitting on your couch. Putin might as well be fighting Martians his technology is so old.
