Used FG400 For First Time Today

I haven't used color lock yet. Even if I did, I don't have much to compare it to really. Sorry.

I like the Menz. stuff a lot.

I'll bet by switching pads I can get the finish using FG-400 so nice that most customers would apply a sealant or wax and call it a day....I was shocked at how this product finishes up! :props:
 
Finishes very nice and I like working with it better than PG1000

Working on another one tonight. One of our employees is taking it to the tractor pull this weekend so I figure I better make it look nice. Have to do our other pumpkin too. Ill make a full thread for them when done. Heres a picture from now, ive gone across each section three times with FG400. Its taking awhile but looking better. Paint is missing in some spots. Using a tufbuf black wool pad with the flex pe14. I was too lazy to fill up my pad washer as I knew I had to leave for a bit and was anxious to see results so I just used a spur instead. Man do these things shed. I never noticed much shedding when using the pad washer though.
 
Bobby, would you recommend getting a rotary as a part-time detailer? I'm just using the PC atm with some foam pads and surbuf. Getting good results so far.

Sure!

A rotary machine is simply another tool in your detailing arsenal. A rotary polisher allows me to achieve a finer finish quicker than with it's dual action counterpart and I'm very comfortable using it.

Rotaries are more aggressive that dual action polishers. Because they rotate at some rpm they'll tend to throw product a bit to taping and covering areas you want to protect is somewhat important.

Types of pads I use

  • Wool
  • Foam wool
  • Foam
    • 4"
    • 6"
    • 7"
It's important to be comfortable with the tools you have at hand but a rotary is a beautiful addition to any detailers arsenal whether professional or weekend warrior...:props:
 
Thanks Bobby. I've been looking at the Makita for some time now and watched a lot of videos on using one. Kinda nervous about using the wool, not so much the foam pads though.
 
Nice job! Even with all these new polishers, a rotary is still king for heavy defects, IMO.

I think I'm gonna pick up a DeWalt 849X. Inexpensive, but great quality!

I also have a DeWalt 849X. I use it for my metal polishing. Its a better tool for that job and I would prefer not to cross contaminate metal dust with paint polishing. The DeWalt has a more speed and power than the Flex which is needed for metal polishing, the bale handle is also nicer since you are always holding it on its side.

Compared to the Flex for paint though, I still think the DeWalt would be perfect. The Flex is just a little smoother and nicer to use, but you have to ask yourself if it is $200 smoother. I would say if you did not have the $200 to spend it is not worth it. The Flex gears are much quieter but I notice the motor is much louder. It appears to be running a much higher RPM than the DeWalt motor is. The DeWalt gears are noisier though.

Both are great. I really like the DeWalt's lint screens.
 
Really liking this stuff for the type of work I do. Bottle is nearly half gone. While working on this tractor today some I tried the Power Gloss as I felt bad for it. I bought it, used it a little before the FG400 and now it sits in the corner. After one section it went back to the corner.

Pulled it out into the sun today to look for holograms/trails and surprisingly couldn't find any except for the "corners" of the hood where it transitions from the horizontal to vertical panels.

The pictures below don't show it well, like I said I will update with a more indepth seperate thread in the show off forum later. The pictures do not show the fenders and roof done, but they are done now and I am onto polishing the second pumpkin. Its only 3 years old though so its not in as bad of shape as this one which is 13 years old.

Anybody know what FG400's secret is? It seems much runnier to me than PG1000. IIRC it is still DAT? Regardless, i'm sold.
