Used the MF Finishing and D301 yesterday

So finally got a break in the weather and I have been itching to use some of my stuff I been buying over winter. So my car was already much defect free since I buffed it out before I put it away in Nov. I just wanted to give it a quick over with the Finishing pad and D301 to bring out the gloss more..I did the car following how Jason Rose demonstrated it in the Autogeek video. I did 3 passes with a moderate hand speed like he showed in the video. At speed 4 on my original PC. Well did the car and then when I pulled it out of the garage to check it in the sun it left a very light hologram effect on it. very minor buffer swirls..I was pretty dissapointed. I dont know if its my paint its a 2010 black Mustang GT. Sucks I had to go over the car again with a black pad to clean off all the swirls. maybe I will give the stuff a try again and use a slower arm speed.

Ohh and yes I primed the pad well before and blew the pad out to clean it after every section I did on the car
 
This is the kind of feedback that is needed as more people who use it and share experiences.

Seems like a soft foam finishing pad and an ultra-fine polish is still the way to go for the last polishing pass. It's always good to hear some real-world, regular end-user experiences though. I'm sure you'll have more opinions to post as you continue trying the MF system, looking forward to it. :props:
 
how much pressure did you use? try less pressure and maybe even a little faster hand speed. the finishing wax needs to use more hand speed then the D300. also just wondering if the swirls you seen were not already there before you used the D301? how did you store the vehicle and remove the dust before polishing? if you had a car cover on it that may have added defects when pulling it off.
 
Properly applied, the new MF DA system produces incredible results with little effort. I don't think we have all the information here. The idea of doing this on a vehicle that was stored for months is a red flag, regardless of how good a shape the paint was in when it went into storage.

I would only polish a car that was first prepped using the conventional steps (wash/clay if needed/wash again/polish)...then at least you know the problem wasn't something from being stored for almost 5 months.
 
Not sure how you can induce swirls from a DA/finishing pad/finishing polish? That seems highly unlikely. Are you sure the "hologram" effect wasn't from leftover wax residue?
 
i thought it might have been left over..but a finger swipe will usually show by smearing it a little..it did nothing and was in the paint..I used very little pressure maybe only a little downward force. The car was clean just cause it has been stored for winter doesnt mean it hasnt been washed..it was clean.

I never use a cover..i use the California duster to remove dust, and washed it with ONR and lake country blue sponge a few times over winter..
Seems i still gotta get the learning curve with the system more..and my car being a straight pure black just makes it much easy to see more defects I wouldnt see on other lighter colors
 
it almost sounds like you used the procedure for the compound only,it only claims 2 or 3 light passes for the finishing wax
 
how did you get that..I said i only did 3 passes and followed the exact way Jason Rose demonstrated how to use the finishing wax and pad in the video. Either my paint doesnt react to it very well. Or I just need to try a different technique. But I followed exactly how Megs said to do it
 
how often did you clean the pad and how did you clean it?
 
like I said in the original post..i cleaned it after every section I did and blew the pad out with air

this was from the other night when i was playing around with it I was using menzerna on it. I was just testing to see how well my air blower would work to clean the pads
 
i am just trying to think of the little things that could have been over looked. not trying to say you do not know what you are doing. it is just wierd that you are having this problem with the D301 and finishing pad.
 
yea i dont know..maybe I just am unlucky and I have paint that it just doesnt play well with..
 
dont get frustrated i am sure someone will have an idea. some of these guys have been using this system for i believe 6 months or more
 
did u try running it on speed 3 with the older pc that you have?
 
no i used Speed from what other reviewers said on the old PC since that would give the proper rate compared to the new XP and G110v2 on speed 3
 
I remember Rasky saying on some paints he couldn't finish great with D301, but it was only a few. I'm going to PM him a link to this thread.
 
Yeah, I've had a couple black cars were it left some light marring. Rather than try and tweek my techniq i just finished with something else. A test spot would have saved you the headache though. ;)

I have a black '65 Cobra to do tomorrow for the Manheim auction and I plan to use the MF system on it. I'll post the results this week, but I'm hoping it works well as time is going to be short.
