was told to come post over here. working with 30 some year old lacquer paint

Thanks for the response Mike. Im pretty sure in 87 the regal t types were clear coated, but this guy really thinks its single stage, I have pics of it....

Either way ill have my flex and PC equipped with yellow/orane/white/red pads... Wolfgang TSR and FG and the paint sealant.

Without paint cleaner, any other good ways to tell if single stage, I'll be sure to do test spots and keep an eye on my pad.

So the GNX today was single stage.mimised the 3401 andmitmwentmpretty smooth!mill post pics later to help the noobs.

Single stage black paint is generally the softest paint there is to work on.

Looking forward to the before and after pictures, perhaps start your own thread instead of tagging onto this Corvette thread since these aver very different cars and each project really deserves its own thread.

Yeah good idea, I didn't mean to jack this thread.

ive only gotten about 1/3rd of the car done, but thought id toss up some pictures.

i had expected to be done by now, but i think ive had every problem possible come up. first i had the wrong backing pad, and no one in town stocked 5" hook and loop. then the pressure regulator switch went out on my air compressor. and now the damn compressor is spitting oil out of the breather cap.

Hey, she's coming along! :xyxthumbs:

Ya, know... looking at those stripes now, I'm thinking they were thinking YENKO type stripes when they did it, 'way back when'.

my dad actually painted it back in the early 70s (that was its 3rd paintjob, and the car was only about 4-6 years old at the time. i think every owner of this car has used, abused, and beat it to hell.) he wanted to use corvette colors, and corvette striping on it. the hood has the LT1 strips on it, and the body stripes were based off the ZL1 stripes.

im finally about done with the car. between bad weather and having 2 air compressors go out on me, its taken much longer than it should have.

the passenger side responded very well to buffing. its no mirror finish, but i can at least read something in the reflection.

and the left side of the hood/front end has been buffed, but waiting for wax. i realise the picture isnt the greatest, but the left side looks much darker and cleaner now. compared to the unbuffed side, it almost looks like it has a blueish tinge to right now.

so, all in all, im pretty happy with how it turned out. it still needs a repaint, theres no question about that. but itll last me a few more years now.

Thanks for the follow-up, it's really appreciated. Not sure where you're hosting your photos, hope they don't turn into red x's down the road.

And the above statement and the entire focus of this thread is a text book example of what I wrote in this article....

"Taking your car's paint to it's maximum potential"

the megs #7 just came in today, so i spent all afternoon washing and removing the wax build up. why didnt you guys warn me that it could take 5+hrs to just remove the old wax build up?

removing the build up has already made the car look better. its made a lot of the little spider cracks much less noticeable, and its made the rear fenders that ive sand blasted with road grime much less noticable.

now i just need a couple of days without rain so i can rub this #7 in.

Another example of old single stage paint saved by the #7 treatment shared in this article,

Here's all your pictures resized to 800 pixels wide and added to your free gallery here on AGO so they'll always tell the story...

Great work on the Vette! OP, aren't you glad you put the effort in? The before and after pics tell all the story you need. Now, you've worked hard on it, so get out and drive it!

thanks for the kind words guys. the pics are on imgur, so theyll be here for years to come.

Now, you've worked hard on it, so get out and drive it!
