Wetsanding a 99 Integra

So I just bought a 99 Acura Integra. The car has alot of potential but just needs a good amount of TLC from years and years of neglect. Now I've already given it a good bath and actually wetsanded some panels with 3000grit, then used my PC 7424XP with a LW orange pad and M105/205. I got decent results but I'm still not very happy with the finish.

So I'm thinking maybe I need to go back and use 2000, 2500 and finally 3000 to get the shine I'm wanting. Also would maybe using a wool pad for my PC give me cutting power?

What are you trying to wet sand? Is there light scratches or orange peel?
 
Did you take PTG readings before wetsanding? I can't imagine a 99 Integra to have much paint to start; you don't want to cut through.
 
I have read that 1500 is a good start for removing orange peel.
 
That DA is gonna be tough to get results after wet sanding. I know people can do it...but they know exactly what pads and product combination gets it done. A rotary with a wool pad will get it done every time. Just be careful if you're trying to wet sand orange peel...factory clear tends to be on the thin side.

If it is orange peel you're going after. 1500, followed by 2000 usually does the trick for me. Then MG105 with a rotary and wool pad should win the battle no problem. Follow up with 205 and a finish foam pad. Then lay your sealant. :dblthumb2:
 
If you don't have a rotary at hand. You can try getting some Surbuf pads, they will give you more cut than the pads your using.
 
I'm mainly trying to remove orange peel and some light scratches and unfortunately I can not take readings on the paint depth. Thankfully I do have a rotary and will be buying a wool pad very soon for it. lol I believe that if I'm careful I shouldn't have any problems with burning through the paint. Are you sanding by hand or DA? Has the car been repainted or is it factory paint? Got pics?

By hand unfortunately. And I know for sure the front bumper has been sprayed, as for the rest of the car I really don't see any indications of a respray. I will try and get some pics up for you guys soon.
 
I don't know how experienced you are but you have to be VERY careful when working with a rotary and wool pads. A lot of cutting power and can heat up very quickly. Don't want to see you damage you car, only way to fix a burnt panel is getting it repainted which can cost 500+.

I've worked with wool and rotary but def. have more experience with the PC. I'm going to be extremely careful using wool and my rotary and hopefully she'll come out sparkling like a diamond instead of burnt. lol

I have done some wetsanding on a few repainted vehicles. I usually start out with 2000 grit and that usually gets the job done. After wetsanding, I've done very well with either the Flex 3401 or the PC with the 3.5" backing plate. I always start out with the orange pads with M105 before moving on the either a white or green polishing pad with either M205 or PF106fa. The results have been very satisfying.:xyxthumbs:

Wow! Looks like you have a lot work ahead of you. I noticed the front bumper seems to have some cracked paint. Did you take all the stuff off the dash?

You don't generally see too many 4 door Integras out there.

Yeah most of the 4doors are grocery getters. lol I'd like to get this one back to its stock clean form and then go from there with modifications. And yeah unfortunately the front bumper was painted and the paint is now chipping but it will hopefully be getting painted soon. As far as the interior goes its 100% better then when I first got the car but could still use work. Good thing I like project cars. hahaha
 
Personally I would never wetsand a factory paint job thats 11 years old . Extreemly risky and the clear coat paint you have left afterwards may not last long before failing.
