I had a "cheap" rotary which I used for about 2 years until I decided to go for the Flex. I don't live in the USA and only flex has a 230 volt model. I also got the 4 3/8 backing plate for the Flex. I haven't had the time to try it out due to my very busy schedule, but I'm very excited to try it out. I have purchased so much stuff from AG over the months but have yet to try them out. I am sure all will turn out OK as AG does not carry lousy products. This is truly an addiction.

The 4 3/8" backing plate fits 5.5" pads and 6" pad and that's a good thing. But keep in mind, there's a LOT of talk about using THIN pads on tools like the Porter Cable, Meguiar's G110v2 and Griot's polisher as these tools are NOT direct drive.
That's not a benefit to a direct drive, gear driven tool.
So look at thick pad for this backing plate. The Meguiar's line has some small diameter but thick pads. (Too thick for the PC style tools in my opinion), but they work well on the Flex 3401
I wrote this article a few years ago and most of these pads are still availbe except the thick 5.5" Hydro-Tech. Take a look at the thicker pads in this article.
