what am i doing wrong

PS: Your paint is what we call hammered :buffing:

It'll most likely take a full two step to straighten that out and about 15 hours or so.

3D Professional Detailing Products, HD car care, 3D HD

You'll need 4-6 each 5" B & S Orange Pads with HD Adapt

3-4 5" B & S White Pads with HD Adapt and you should be good to go.

Adapt is a unique product as it "Adapts" to the aggressiveness of the pads

3D HD Adapt

But it may take HD Cut or you could get more aggressive with Adapt by using yellow pads. It would probably be less to by the Cut than both yellow and orange pads.

Do a Test spot for sure.

Either way you are going to need to make an investment in pads and products.

HD Products are user friendly, highly effective and very attractively priced.

Top with HD Poxy

Yes and I would follow the link to HD Adapt I posted for you and it will answer your questions in more detail.

I want to go the foam pad and polish route
but i don't know if I like the all in one polish idea

It's NOT an all in one polish. It is an Adaptive Polish, huge difference.

Anyway I'm outta here, enjoy the process which ever way you choose to go.

I assume those marks were there before your used the PC?

Your going to need to go over that quite a few times with the orange pad and adapt.

Dont use too much of it, less it more.

May I ask what the big deal is with using clay? I never use it but pre-clean with solvent and a pre-cleaner while buffing the car for the first time.
Then or depending on the paint's condition is weather it is to be compounded and then final polished. I use 3M's Perfect it system and also Meguiar's 105 & 205 polishes with foam pads. It all depends on the condition of the paint.
If the finish is really bad I will wet send it with 1500 grit and then 3000 on a DA sander and then follow it up with 105 and 205 and Prowax Carnauba Paste or BAF'S Pro Wax's Profection paint sealant depending on the finish of the car. This is all done with a 2800 Milwaukee high speed polisher and an orbital.
Sometimes I will use Liquid Glass (a glaze) to finish. I know this is a lot of work but it all depends on the vehicle's surface. Sometimes it is in terrible shape and your hoping to restore something that maybe will come back, Again it's all in technique and what you have to work with and your skill level. . . . . .

I suggest you watch Mikes videos on how to polish, your using way too much product also. All that can "help" that car is time and a good technique, I think if you watch the videos,do a test spot and learn how to polish you may see some progress. You are going to need a compound and cutting pads to get results, next time instead of doing 3 panels and be disappointed just do one panel and see if your getting results. There is no magic product to use.

can I use Lake Country 5 1/2 Inch Flat Pads with the adapt?

Yes, of course you can. The diameter of the pad (or even type of foam) doesn't preclude (or even factor into) the use of certain polishes.

The aggressiveness of the pad in combination with the chemical (polish) being used is what gives you your "cut". There are no hard and fast rules about which pads to use with what chemical, although gross mismatches like using a compound on a soft finishing pad, or a finishing polish on a compounding pad, likely won't give the best results.
