what did everyone think of Obama's speech?

A debate will never be won while discussing the following subjects: Religion, Sex and Politics.

Great observation!:props:

Along with those topics you've listed, I'd like to add something I've heard before:

"When debating religion, sex, politics, organized labor, and organized crime...I give the most points to organized crime........The Mafia has better restaurants". :D

Thankfully we live in a country that allows us to criticize our politicians....

Lol... But if we can't debate over religion, sex, politics, and org labor then what the hell is the Government there for? I say Elect Hoffa! Wait... NM... How about Kermit the frog?

I do agree that Mob/Mafia restaurants are the best of all!!!!

So happy its over. He's a great speaker.. but not a fan of his politics. I was so excited for Parenthood tonight also.

He's an OK speaker when he has a teleprompter to read from. Without it, not so much.

No one can fix the mess in 2 years what the previous administration left.

National Debt went through the roof and the economy was already on a downturn.
Don't forget the Wall Street fiasco. GM was left for the next administration to clean up per #### Chenney.

Capital Hill has a lot of old school self serving politicians that want to make a career out of doing nothing for the American people. Flush them for more progressive ideas and thinkers.

Term Limits of 8-10 years max Senators and Reps would fix a lot of the dread lock on the Hill and bring the power back to the people.

Letting big business ship off jobs to the Far East to generate further profits/big bonuses for upper management doesn't help local jobs and our economy.

Toss the lobbyests out on the street would be a good start.

I like half of what you're saying, but PLEASE stop it with the blaming Bush stuff. Obama wanted to be president. He said he could fix it. He can't (and of course he can't, because this all mostly Congress' problem, but the country was looking for a miracle worker, and they thought Obama would be it).
If people stop trying to constantly put blame somewhere else, and actually work on solutions, there is a chance they may actually discover one. But the argument that Bush started it is just tired. This is now Obama's game, and unfortunately for all of us, he hasn't figured it out yet.
Agree completely about the rest..

There a couple of things that could be done to help.

Neither stands a snowballs chance in hell of even being talked about.

1)Make public employees unions illegal.

2)Make all public employees and elected officials retirements not only taxable, but they can only collect one. Our governor here in California (Moonbeam) will be collecting four different pensions when he is finished destroying my state this time. $417,000.00 per year. And he's not worth one thin dime.

Part 2) great , but part 1), many public employee's are unionized, so which are you talking about? Just curious- but also curious how this fixes the economy??

We The People NEED to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY! I agree fully!!! We are in a generation of blame!

We blame someone for everything! This needs to end!
If you mess up, then fess up! Why push blame?

Our kids see us do it then they do it and we get mad at them then BLAME the other kids they hang out with or the schools!

Why not be RESPONSIBLE and do something to fix it? I have chosen to take this route in my life and honestly it has changed my life, my son's life, and my wife's life for the better! Now if WE could all do it it would improve our way of life and country so much that it is immeasurable!

Im sure i am going to offend someone but

We (United States) need to remove the unions, they are a huge waste of money for corporations and the rest of us, that's why they ship jobs overseas. Some guy or gal wants $30/hr and full benefits and retirement to put bolt A into hole B then pass on the part, or have 1 guy working while 4 watch. I get tired of hearing picketers complain that they are being asked to pay $20/ month towards their health insurance while im paying nearly $900 a month for decent insurance. You want to buy things made in america then make it possible to do so with-out having to pay an arm and a leg more. I believe and the constitution states that when a government becomes corrupt WE THE PEOPLE have the right to abolish the govt, and form a new one. It seems like its at that point. Everything is screwed up, I dont care for the current president at all, but i do know that this has been along time coming. Also make drug testing mandatory for all welfare/ unemployment recipients. I don't care what the aclu stats that is not right or any of their other BS. :hungry:

I missed it because all of southern california had no power lol.

I hate politics so I watched the pregame on USA before turning it to the Pack Saints game.

There are many bibliographies on the history of Labor Unions in America that make for a very interesting read. Including very vivid descriptions of the massacre that occurred when, for the one and only time in our country's history, the US government sent military planes and bombed the hell out of coal miners and their families. That, and the hiring of the notorious Pinkerton Agency to cage unhappy laborers and use them for target practice.

Not to be outdone, there are similar, interesting bibliographies on the history of corporations in America....My favorite is a book on Henry Ford...the same Henry Ford that purchased a castle in Ireland, had it disassembled block by block and then reassembled near his home town (around Ford Lake) in America. Inside, what was then his castle, was where he had constructed a dining room that seated 100 guests, each guest having privelege to their own individual servant. Too bad Henry Ford very seldom had 100 people who were willing to be his guests. No problem for Henry Ford, though. He just bought 100 monkeys, had them dressed in appropiate white-tie-and-tails dinner suits, and had them seated around the dining room table, filling whatever empty chairs there may have been on a given night. This ensured he wasn't to become too lonely and to have plenty of work for the 100 servants to perform. This was going on while his factory workers were asking for a 15 cent raise. The audacity of some folks!!!

It took more than 50 years for that factory worker to be in that $30 hr range....but the corporate managers during the same time frame were also being rewarded, only at an exponentially greater rate. In the last 10-15 years these $30 jobs were greatly reduced by Union and non-Union represented companies, with everyone agreeing to Competitve Wage Agreements, whereby new hires would only reach parity in wages (but never in benefits) that would take 10-15 years to attain through a yearly, set-in-stone, non-negotiable wage percentile increase (usually 3% annum).

{What happened: If there's no longer a "company" (in America, that is).....no longer any hiring agreements...no longer any American employees to be bothered with....whether the company's workers were organized or not!}

All of this would seem reasonable, due to the "hardships" corporations were having. But, LO and Behold...the corporations were relieved of some of their "hardships" by being allowed, through some magical trade agreements our government dreamed up for their corporate cronies, to move their operations offshore and 'pay' the local laborers at their discretion. Ever seen the accomodations that Mexican workers are able to afford? That's evidently what our country's work-force (what's left of it) will be forced to shadow...unless we get our jobs opportunity, and our dignity, back on course. I believe many, many corporations don't 'need' any more our 'help' to line their bulging....greedy to the point of being obscene....wallets.

At least some areas of our country are still taking "prevailing wages" into consideration for their local work force's wages/benefits. Wonder who in their right mind dreamed that up?! I'd bet it wasn't corporations!

Many Americans are finding it harder and harder to purchase much of anything. Not easy if your not gainfully employed. Or your wage doesn't provide for the necessities, or even a chance at quality-of-life as outlined in our Constitution.

That's why I would never advocate the overthrow of our government. Why have to stoop to writing up a new Constitution for insurgents? We've got a real good one now! Instead I'm a proponent of ousting the people in power...sometimes our votes do count.

BTW...What ever happened to the protest movements?

The kids that are fortunate enough to attend our colleges and universities are said to be our future. Maybe it's time for them to start some 'movements' for their own future's sake. I remember when 'movements' had meaning...and the politicians did take notice.

Drug testing is often a requirement for becoming gainfully employed....along with random drug testing after being hired...to be on that company's payroll. I see no reason, then, why those receiving pay for not being gainfully employed, and "on the dole" from our country's largest employer...The US-Citizens'-Taxes-That-Are-Being-Controlled-and-Misused-By-The-Feds Corporation...should be treated otherwise.

Hope my Country uprights itself soon...too many disgruntled Americans in my viewpoint.

Note: I hardly ever get offended. :)

Bob

Being poor in America is too comfortable IMO. There's people on Welfare, Stamps, whatever there is out.... they that are doing better than my family at times - and we work HARD. My betterhalf has been out of work due to maternity leave for the past 6 weeks and we have been struggling.... what did I do - worked harder! Let the lazy people off America's tit and free up trillions of dollars?!?!?!?

Amen to that.

Bob, well said. I hope too that our country can set it self straight soon. :xyxthumbs:

Well, I'm need to opt out of this conversation. My politics are probably considered "quite" extreme to most folks.

I did listen to the speech, and kept losing interest every time he defended the government, regulations, and taxes.

Just keep in mind when these "suits" promise lower taxes on the "poor and middle class" and higher taxes on the "wealthy and corporations"; the "wealthy and corporations" will never pay higher taxes regardless of what their tax is. They just pass it on to the consumer. Hence higher taxes on the "rich" is really just a tricky way of saying "We're going to raise your taxes, poor and middle class individuals!"

The only tax I can see helping everyone as a whole is a fixed 15% federal, and fixed 10% state tax on all money "earned". And we really need to get away from entitlements and let Americans take care of themselves. SS is a horrid investment if your 21. It's like my money is being stolen from me, and I will never see any kind of return.

The speech was intended to be politically in the center, and it was. He didn't play one side over the other.

Now the Republican and Tea Bagger rebuttals...they were as we figured they would be...very partisan, and playing to their base with no answers, just the same rhetoric we've heard since forever. Michelle Bachman...heaven help us. What in the world are the tea baggers thinking..?..is this the best person they can field? (personally I hope so).

The great thing is...now the Republicans can't sit back and hide and complain....they actually have to work with the democrats to govern. I don't hold much hope for that because their only goal is to take down the president.

Wow, this coming from the REALITY that Democrats controlled the House, the Senate and held the Presidents office for 2 years! And what did they do in that time? Give me just one example where their combined "leadership" (cough, cough) actually did something POSITIVE for the country, just one.

Ok, I'm plenty old enough to know you never discuss politics but this thread got me going. I agree fundamentally with what BobbyG said early on. The country is in a state of ruination not becaue of any ONE politician, it's because they are all now nothing more than elected to an elite country club (and saying they are part of the country is absurb given their lack of regard for OUR country).
