What did you do today, in regards to detailing?

I started out detailing in the early 2000's using Mothers and Meguiar's products. I went through gallons of Gold Class and NXT soap, loved applying Mothers Pure Carnauba Wax to my car. Back then, that's all I had access to. The thing is, those products are still being sold unchanged from when I was using them 20 years ago. Not only has the industry moved on, but the way consumers shop is drastically different, opening the gate for new brands and places to buy these specialty brands and products. And yet, Meguiars is stuck in 2005, be that the products or how they are sold.................they have been left behind. Meguiar's are hardly alone in this, Mothers, Turtle Wax, Armor All are stuck in a time warp as well.

Talking to the owner of The Bays Wheeling over the weekend and the subject of Turtle Wax, Hybrid Solution inparticular. He said great products except the name, he's right! I'm a brand snob myself, tough business they're in

The clouds didn't come back until I was almost through but I got a good maintenance wash in. It only has a little over 500 miles so the wheels and tires just got a rinse, foam cannon, bucket soap, woolies, and brushes. I will wash it a few more times to get the mold release off the tires before I scrub them hard and start applying dressing. I started the wash with BH AF in my IK 12 on the front end for bugs, and I let that dwell. I had tried foaming the wheels with The Final Details Soap but even at double the recommended amount I just got watery foam with no clinging power. I added 2 more oz of TFD Soap and got thin but usable foam, so I went ahead with that on the wheels but I swapped to my other reservoir for the first foam on the truck and used up the last of the ADS Shampoo+. I won't be buying and more TFD Soap or ADS Shampoo+, neither of them work for me with my water and systems. I rinsed the first foam and foamed again with Megs Hyper Wash and also had MHW in my mitt bucket. I hadn't washed a pickup since we sold the other Taco in July of 2022 in Hawaii and I had almost forgotten how much climbing is involved. I started by using my bigger step ladder to get in the bed and wash the back half of the roof and went from there. I had to hit some sections with another round of foam as I worked my way around because I was trying to be slow and methodical. It will take a few washed to develop an efficient pattern but I finally got all the way around it and finished on the front end and grille. The paint was absolutely flat and my Ego blower was struggling to shift the water. I ended up using one of my big Detail Popo Heavy Rain towels on the roof and hood and a few 15x24 TRC Gauntlets on the rest of the truck. I still need to do a full decon so I didn't want anything more than a light topper/drying aid so I went with Megs Hybrid Ceramic Detailer with some edgeless plush towels for the final wipe and buff. I discovered several more dealer installed scratches and scuff that will most likely come out when I polish it and I don't see any that will will survive a gloss enhancement. I am not sure what to use for a gloss enhancement, but I will have a better idea after I do the decon. It isn't going to take much to make it look good. By the time I was done I was whipped and a full decon is going to have to be done in bits and pieces

Funny you used P&S as an example, my last order from CCP came in a P&S carton that had "Black Diamond Collection" on it. I spent about an hour down a rabbit hole before giving up, I've never bought any P&S products and I was curious, well I'm not anymore.

When I first got into this madness I used a few Duragloss products, Fast Clean & Shine, Nu-Glass polish, and their rinseless wash come to mind.
I haven't used Duragloss in years, it is too hard to get, I was just using them as an example of a company that hasn't run amuck and tried to appease every single segment of every possible market niche

I wanted to add that I am glad that the TRD Off Road decals on the rear fenders are much smaller and less obnoxious than in previous years, however, they are very cheap and cheesy looking in my opinion

It's funny, listening to the TRC podcast a few weeks ago, talking about dressings, P&S brand ambassador and trainer Sydni Brae Gwinn mentioned that P&S have too many products in that segment. She is correct in saying that, but I found that quite amusing coming from her as she is such a great voice for the brand and has influenced many new products.

Exploring that further, they have a variety of different product lines, or "collections" -

Renny Doyle Double Black Collection - This is basically their premium or pro-sumer line of products, and the ones that get promoted the most. Think Brake Buster, Swift, Xpress, Bead Maker, Paint Gloss, Dream Maker, Shine All ect.

Off-Road Collection - As the name suggests, these are products that offer additional cleaning strength to deal with mud and dirt. I doubt they are ground-up new products, rather altered versions of existing products. Grouping them in a single line helps them stand out better rather than buried within the wider P&S lineup.

Pro-Series Collection - A lot of the in this line are legacy products, rebranded to group them together. Quite a number of these are only sold to professional high-volume detail shops, There are some true relics of the past here, from Wash-&-Wax soaps, old fashioned glazes and rocks-in-a-bottle compounds, spray waxes and bulk quantity dressings. There are however a few newer products such as Release, the fragrance line, and undressed tire cleaner.

ChemTrol - This is another old lineup primarily aimed at the professional high-volume user. While they can be used on their own, these products have been designed for the P&S dilution system called ChemTrol. These units will automatically dilute gallon bottles of product to a set ratio, improving time efficiency. There is nothing fancy here, think glass cleaner, heavy duty degreasers, dressings, wheel cleaner. Meguiar's also have something similar, which is called DMS6000 Metering System.

Babe's Boat Care - I've heard the Phillips brothers speak of this in the past, its basically an old fashioned line of trade products. They have been given a refresh in recent years with new labels. Fairly sure not even we get these products in Australia.

I have cherry picked products from each of the above collections, excluding the boat system. For the most part, the best products are found within the Pro Series and Double Black lines.
Their lineup is .. interesting. Ive tried quite a few of their products and only really stick with 1 or 2 because the rest just dont stand out in the crowd for me. Even beadmaker as good as it is at aesthetics isnt something I keep on the shelf because of the dusting.

I enjoyed DreamMaker but that could just be in my head… Xpress is only thing I’ll keep using as it’s been great to use. 40/60 (40%express) lathers well if needed and wiped clean

I passed one of them in that color today, very eye catching.

Also why not just remove the stickers and debadge while your at it? I personally like the clean look of no badges or stickers

Thanks, I was hoping it would be as close as possible to the blue on the little Lexus but it is a bit darker, and has hints of Tanzanite purple in the right light

It was cloudy and the sun was behind the trees for the pics and it looks a lot more vibrant in the sunlight

The metallic in it is extremely subtle

Yeah, I think the stickers will end up going

I noticed the one on the driver's side doesn't even look level to my eye

One of the already added on extras was the dark overlay on the grille Toyota emblem, the dark letters in the tailgate logo, and the black chrome overlays on the Tacoma side badges (they almost look like regular chrome in the pics)

I honestly think I like them at this point but time will tell

Dream maker is good. But no protection keeps me reaching elsewhere.

I tried expresss and it was splotchy. Never thought to dilute it though. I’ll try that see if it’s better.

you can dilute up to 2:1 (2 parts water, 1 part Xpress) for mild cleaning
