What did you do today, in regards to detailing?

I’ve been on this forum for many years and remain mostly a lurker out of reluctance to share personal things. I just read with the objective to expand my detailing knowledge daily. I’ll post about my techniques if the spirit moves me and those who read about them can take them or leave them. It doesn’t affect me either way. I tend to keep my thoughts and opinions to myself and I certainly don’t have a Facebook account. One is just asking for trouble over there. People, and society in general,DO take the internet too seriously. It’s a terrible shame but that’s a topic outside of the scope of a detailing forum. Thankfully, for the most part, the guys here are pretty decent I would never let anything anyone says get me down and luckily we rarely have to deal with that. Detailing is my passion and the more I obtain from sources like this one the better I get at it. That’s why I’m here.

I'm not on FB either, my whole family is, they keep asking me why I'm not. Simple, I don't care what you're all doing, and I don't want you to know what I'm doing.

Detailing wise I kept it simple today, Qashqai got a QD wipe down with Ech2o, it had school pick-up duty yesterday, so once again it had fingerprints on the doors, and on the hood for some reason.

They have been good, thanks for asking...

I am enjoying the garage and the driveway finally got paved about 3 weeks ago so that's a real plus

Opie checked on me a while back because I had been off the forum for so long and I will tell you what I told him

I got a VERY mean PM last spring from a fairly new member who went off on me for...

1) hogging the "what did you do today regarding non-detailing" thread (as if that's possible)

2) showing off and bragging about my new house in the above mentioned thread

3) saying something negative about Mike Phillips

I was absolutely floored to be attacked like that by someone I don't know and had never even had harsh words with

I wasn't going to dignify the idiot with a response and I simply deleted the PM and chalked it up to experience

But

It came at a time when there was also a LOT of political rancor on the forum and both together just caused me to take a self imposed time out

I enjoy the forum 99% of the time and normally have a pretty thick skin but it was just too much

I really appreciated Opie reaching out to me and I appreciate you asking about the house

I am trying to ease back in to the forum but I am still a bit gun shy

That is appalling bad behavior and I hope you reported the member in question.

For record, in no way were you "bragging" or taking over the What Did You Do Today thread, and I enjoyed seeing your posts there. Even so, you have every right to show off something that matters to you.

I post on a core group of forums, sharing things that interest me or what I have been doing. I don't do this to show off, rather to engage with others on subjects I have no other outlet for. I have no one close to me that has a single positive thought towards detailing, or even cars in general. That's why I have been posting on forums since early 2008.

Lately, I have been getting increasingly disheartened by my forum life. I take a lot of time and effort writing, photographing, editing and then publishing information covering a variety of topics. I like to think I am a good writer, making sure I write for the audience in question. However, someone took the time to write me a private message pointing out a trivial grammatical error, one that I thought was self-explanatory.

I also have a certain person taking offence at how I like to spend my downtime, basically questioning why I would spend so much time washing my car, and why I would overcomplicate a task, that it's not rocket science. Said person carefully constructs negative posts, then when challenged or called out, turns it back on you as if you are the aggressor.

Then there are those who ask questions out of laziness, get the response they want, then fail to acknowledge the help they received. Or go on to ask the exact same question elsewhere, or again in the exact same thread.

I also find those who behave like that never contribute to the forum they are posting on, other than taking pot shots at other people or making snide comments. I have to wonder, why are these people on a specialist forum in the first place if they end up being negative on every single topic relating to the forum in question.

I'll point out that the above are is not from this forum.

I had a guy call me out about my knock sensor issue saying why would you need to wash your car twice a week and that carwashes are bad for sensors. He went on to say "you've been warned"

I that carwashes are bad for sensors.

That’s the most hilarious thing I’ve read on here in a long time! What an ignoramus! I mean you’re not pressure washing underneath your hood

It never ceases to amaze me that some people will quit minding their own business and expend the energy to write a complete stranger something they have no business writing about in the first place.

This is so true and furthermore, I feel that people like this would never have the guts to say the same thing to your face, they would rather hide behind their keyboard slinging trash

Quick 2BM with Reset. 303 Aerospace on the trim, and Meg’s endurance on the tires. Love Reset soap!

Still have a lot to learn, but that’s part of the fun!

GREAT G R E A T choice on the color of your truck, don't know why green isn't more popular and and/or offered by more mfgs

Washed the EN after work at the touch-free wash, drove home and spot dried it. Then popped the hood and used Bilt-Hamber QD @3:1 to spruce up the engine bay a bit. Needs a little more attention and then some DIY Detail tire dressing in there for some "sheen"

Oh boy that green looks GOOD! I’d be proud of that truck for sure.

Welcome back Chilly!

I'll be looking forward to the opinion on DIY's tire dressing. I have it sitting in my basement unopened. So far it's the one product in their line that I've heard mixed reviews.

I'm actually considering adding a couple of the DIY red jeweling pads to my DIY Gold Polish & Pads system and using that system for my fall cleanup soon.

It's actually not bad and IMO would be great for engine bay dressing and wheelwells, it's not ready to make my line up of tire dressings, no way as it's a tough group

Thanks! It’s Rainforest Green Metallic, they only offered it two years on Chevrolet trucks (2014-2015). I forget the GMC color name. I searched for a long time to find that color when I bought it used. I’m a sucker for GREEN trucks

Thank you JDGolden! I get compliments on the green color all the time. I just want a ride in your Z28 for nostalgia sake!

after decades since release, there is a lot of nostalgia every time I drive it. It’s not perfect but that’s ok. I used to ride my bike to the local Chevy/Pontiac dealer (they sold both) and drooled over the Camaro/Firebird lineup back when they were brand new.

I had to deal with some bird crap, and it's hot here today, 90f with 13% humidity, so not unpleasant, but better off inside. Ended up wiping down the whole thing with Ech2o, the gloss is so addictive.

And because I had it in the garage, I cleaned the inside glass as well, it's almost pointless to do it out in the sun. I used Krystal Klear Bubble Gum Blitz. Strangely I've been smelling it every time I went into the garage for the last couple of days, I discovered the nozzle on the sprayer had been weeping. I removed it, wiped it down, put it back on, seems fine, I guess it just wanted some attention.

Ok

With 2 more doors and the hatch completed I have decided to give the edge to the Griots synthetic clay rather than the TRC for a couple of reasons

The Griot’s sponge definitely takes off crap on the lower door and rocker panels that the TRC sponge won’t remove

The other is very subjective but even with the awkwardness I perceive on lower vertical surfaces the Griots sponge seems to “stick” to the paint more than the TRC sponge and to me it has much more tactile feedback, which I consider vital in any claying process

The TRC sponge skipped over crap that the Griots subsequently removed and I didn’t even feel what it missed until the panel was dried and baggy tested

After I did the baggy test and went back over the same area with the Griot’s sponge I could easily detect most of the contaminants the TRC sponge missed, and with the Griots sponge I could get most of them off, and then get the stragglers with the actual clay

Yeah my favorite synthetic clay product (griots) may try one of their mitts next..

Yeah I think a lot of members appreciated your post and either got ideas or lived vicariously through you.

F what anyone in the internets got to say hate wise. Also remember it’s how people who are just negative in nature express their emotions. Thin line between love and hate.

Hopefully dudes gone or got an attitude adjustment.

No need to ease back. Your post have been helpful and positive. Dive right in.

Also that guy didn’t post his opinions in a forum because he woulda got eviscerated by the rest of us.

Welcome back and don’t you leave us again!

I remember when I got my first order of DIY products, you mentioned that the tire dressing was good, not great. I would probably agree with that after using it a few times now.

The runny liquid makes it very easy to distribute and delivers a consistent, uniform look. That runny consistency makes it ideal for use with a flagged tip brush on larger truck and SUV tires. However, I would best describe it as a "workhorse" product, it doesn't do anything wrong, but it doesn't make you go WOW.
