What did you do today, in regards to detailing?

So today was the day to remove the dealership applied unwanted sticker and the "LT" badge, then add the TURBO badge from the Sonic, I think it looks much better now...+5 HP

It was a combo of Goo-Gone, Goof Off, dental floss and her fancy hair dryer to remove the dealership sticker and LT badge. I then used some quick detailer and Griot's Garage Compound to clean it all up. Next was a trip to the touch-free wash and come home to apply the TURBO badge

Btw, today is my g/f's birthday

Been very neglected this year, so today my truck got a proper exterior detail. Its been 2 years since it was coated with pure evo. Last year sometime i topped it with cancoat evo. The roof and hood where dead but the rest was still performing good. Mind you everything sits outside 24/7 and this thing mostly just sits.

First- wheels/tires hit with 3d yellow, wheels also got hit with the last of my supply of adams iron remover. Wheels then washed with ADS decon in the bucket.

Next truck got foamed with labocosmetica primus 2.0, dwell and rinse. Then sprayed down paint with labocosmetica sidero cut 1:4 in IK multi 360. Let dwell for 3-5 minutes and left on the surface while i did a bucket wash with labocosmetica purifica.(gary dean style towel method)

With the decon complete, it was time to make a few light passes on the hood and roof with flex supa beast, white lc force pad and gyeon primer. Once complete, i grabbed my oldest open bottle in the fridge of ADS quartz(from 3-31-2024) and coated the hood and roof. No ill effects noticed from using a 6month old open bottle of quartz.

Rest of the paint got an application of ADS ceramic sealant. Door jams and wheels wiped with ADS adapt. Tires dressed with ADS tire +.

Im waiting until ADS phobic comes out to coat the rest of the truck with it.

Phobic sounds interesting. Kind of like an ADS Can Coat.

Apparently September 12 is launch night.

I'd say the spray on ceramic coatings like this are getting saturated...but great for wheels. I also use them in lower areas to reinforce protection through winter.

This was last weekend, only posting now, for obvious reasons. I washed the FJ

Foamed with the last of my NV Snow.
Followed up with a 2B wash with Reset.
Dried it off inside the garage.
And since it's been 6 months since I coated it with NV Jet and Lustre, I thought I'd put some protection on top. I was looking at either Collinite 845 or TWHS Graphene Infused To the Max Wax. I went with the later, and it was a bit of a pain on the white roof, but OK on the silver every else. I should have gone with the Collinite. Still, it is beading up very nicely.PSX_20240905_213755.jpgPSX_20240905_214006.jpgPSX_20240905_214407.jpgPSX_20240905_214552.jpg

Big Dave and I were talking about how we weren't as motivated while the site was down but after thinking about it, I actually did a rinseless on the big car prior to a trip, did a complete wash and interior cleanout after the trip because it went into the dealer the next day for the 5,000 mile service, and I did a couple more panels on the little car for my annual decon and paint refresh

I almost forgot I gave the little car an interior wipedown to test out ADS Pilot; good stuff

I didn't take pictures because I honestly thought AG was down for the count

Cleaned a very dirty windshield using DiY RW 256:1, TRC Clay Scrubber and TRC Gauntlet to dry. Windshield came out perfect. Rest of vehicle was in decent shape. If it wasn't going to rain Tuesday I would have done the entire car.

I washed the Qashqai today, I got to test out the new Eclipse Hyper Foam. It foams up very well, smells a bit like hand cream, not offensive at all. Cleaning ability was fine, it wasn't dirty, more like dusty that has been rained on. It rinsed off totally clean to the eye. But I needed it really clean.

So I moved it inside and gave it a 2B wash with Reset, used the last of my first bottle, but I already have the replacement on the shelf from the last sale. The rinse bucket was a little dirty afterwards, so there was still some contaminants in the surface.

Back outside again to rinse it, and then back in to dry it, used my Gyeon Silk Dryer, it dried the whole thing without wringing it out.

Next up was some protection, the NV Lustre and Jet are still holding up well, but I wanted a sacrificial layer, with some visual enhancement, so I went with Dodo Juice Blue Velvet, I'm finally reaching the bottom of the pot after 15+ years, I've probably done about 10 vehicles with it. People laughed when I said it cost me $96 at the time, that's less than $10 per application and still going. Nice. The only annoying thing, I dropped my applicator halfway through, so in the bin it went, luckily I have a few spares.PSX_20240916_161434.jpgPSX_20240916_162116.jpgPSX_20240916_161620.jpgPSX_20240916_161813.jpg

Decided to come out of “retirement”. Got a call last Wednesday from a customer wanting a coating on her husband’s 2020 S7. People truly don’t see scratches because they thought it was in immaculate shape with the exception of some large paint defects. It was the dealership loaner car so you can guess how many automatic washes it has seen and once I pulled it in my garage after the prep wash I could see that this thing was hammered. It’s not perfect now but it passes the ten foot test and the customer was thrilled with the outcome.

I’ve complained about low balling customers but she was the opposite. I quoted her $1000 for coating job (CSL + EXOv5) and she wanted a vacuum and wipe down so I told her that would be an extra $60. We talked for a few minutes and she said let me okay it with my husband and that it would be about $1200. I’ve never had anyone raise the price. The interior cleaning wasn’t worth another $200 so I credited her $100 toward any detailing supplies she needs to maintain the coating.

Looks great! Good on you for the credit to the kind woman.

so you had previously decided to hang up the detailing gig eh?

Looks good. I always liked the A7/S7/RS7 style (though probably not in red for me) and you've got that one popping. Maybe I never looked close enough before but those wheels look a little different than what I recall - I like them.

Not hanging up but I needed a break. I had a pretty busy summer and with this school year getting off to a not so great start I needed time to get things under control before resuming detailing for money.

I wanted to try my new Hero rinseless so I mixed up 2 gallons in the bucket, a gallon in the sprayer, and got a couple of 500 gsm towels and a sponge for the bucket
IMG_5420_25.jpeg

90% of the car was fine for a rinseless but the back was sketchy so I sprayed it down, let it dwell a bit and decided to try just the window

Nope

IMG_5440_25.jpeg

I wasn't going to chance it so I geared up for a full maintenance wash despite the sprinkling rain

I'm sure you guys are tired of hearing me complain about my current gallon of Hyper Wash but this was 6 oz in distilled water and this wasn't after 5 minutes or anything, this was the time it took to go around the car and pick up my phone

IMG_5450_25.jpeg

I got the NV Snow+ and put 3oz and tap water in the foam cannon and got this

IMG_5453_25.jpeg

I let it dwell and got a mitt and climbed my taller step ladder and washed part of the roof and stepped down, forgetting which ladder I was on and went from the second step to the ground, right on my bad knee

I have one step ladder on each side of any taller vehicles

IMG_5458_25.jpeg
I about quit but it would have taken almost as long to get it half way done as finish up

I finished the wash and rinse and blew it off and had just spritzed some ADS Amplify on the hood and hit it with a TRC Gauntlet towel when the rain started again so that was the extent of the Amplify testing

Amplify plus fresh rain

IMG_5459_25.jpeg

I was a bit chilled at the end

I've gone over on my butt a couple of times, angled driveway and a painted surface will do that. Fortunately the paint is wearing down a bit, so it's less slippery now, but I still try to wash on the lawn whenever I can. So far nobody has caught it on video yet. My dogs did it to me once as well, they went behind me to chase a bird and pulled my feet out from under me, I was looking to see if any of the houses had a doorbell camera, I was wondering if I'd see myself on YouTube.

It's a pain when it rains right after washing, but you still like to see how it beads. It's funny, we hope the rain stays away, but we see the upside when it does, you get to see the effects of whatever new product you've used.

Nothing exciting and no real pictures due to declining light and a need to get the job done quickly.

Gave the BRZ a good wash. It's been several weeks since the last washing and the dust was getting pretty thick on the outside. Add an autocross event on Sunday with a light rain shower on the way home and the car was a mess and really in need of a bath.

The only thing worth note in this wash job was I got a chance to dig out my bottle of Griots Track Spray again. On one run this weekend I spun out while crossing the finish line and collected several cones. This left rubber transfer all over one rocker panel, part of the door, and some marks on the fender. The track spray removed all of it effortlessly and there is little/no sign anything happened. On the lower side of the rocker panel, there was enough rubber transfer my rag turned a little orange, but the Track Spray dissolved it away with no real effort. I like the stuff more each time I use it.

So this may seem like a basic and very amateurish question but here goes

In a situation like yesterday where I have a freshly cleaned car that is coated and was dry, and it gets hit with a light rain before you can get it into the garage, would you guys dry it again and risk love marks or would you just leave the rain to dry on it's own?

I realize that rain in some parts of the country can be laden with all kinds of garbage that you don't want drying into spots on your paint but I don't have that problem up here

My $0.02 worth, given the *much* cleaner rain I'm sure you get up there, is just park it in the garage and then inspect it later. 'round these parts the rain tends to melt the skin off our bones so it's a different story, to be sure. ☠️

If I had "just" cleaned it, as it less than a couple hours between the wash and the rain, I'd probably dry it again if the conditions aren't too dusty. Most of the time I can probably get away with it at my home, but in the spring when the fields around me are being plowed, and in the fall when harvest is in full swing, the air is so full of dust and plant matter, I wouldn't risk drying the car a second time and would just let it evaporate in the garage.

I've found myself in situation where I was still drying when it started to rain. In that instance, I pulled the car into the garage and started the drying all over again.
