What did you do today, in regards to detailing?

18 years is an exceptional run for a backing plate
I doubt it was much of anything you did
The foam behind the Velcro deteriorates over time. I'm shocked you got that many years out of it
Those backing plates are EXPENSIVE! No aftermarket option
Good news is if you can get another 18 you'll probably be dead before you have to replace again 💀
First of all it WAS something I did, I put it down in a way that the weight of the machine was on the edge of the backing plate. And yes it's old and the foam is brittle, but I don't use my machine all the time the way you do since I just fool around with this stuff, rather than being a professional.

I did find there WAS an aftermarket option, it looked like one of those ship-direct-from-China things on Amazon, with a month delivery, but it wasn't that much cheaper anyway.

Edit: This is the aftermarket one: https://www.amazon.com/Action-Sandi...a42-4056-8084-e539616fd32a&pd_rd_i=B0796FKXYF

Lets see if this works...

Per DFB's recommendation in his microfiber thread, i bought TRC Cyclone Ultra wheel mitts.. pleased with how it turned out. Adams tire and wheel cleaner. I did find a huge rock chip in my front bumper and I have a scuff on the drivers side of the cab where I assume they were putting the bed to the frame.

The foaming picture is Primus 1.0 diluted 100 ml to 900 ml in foam cannon.

I don't think it's that good for tires AND rims. It did good on the tires, but by the time I got to the rims, the foam was almost all ran off. Might just use it as a dedicated tire cleaner until I run out then buy something else.

I have to find some way to reach the roof. I can barely get the hood and I'm 6 ft.. I tried standing on the side of bed but I can't reach where the marker lights are in the front.

You need the Autofiber Mitt-on-a-Stick. The pro version is out of stock right now, not sure about the regular version.

I got something similar when I got the FJ, but I couldn't find the replacement mitts anywhere. Now I just stand on platform or a plastic tub if I don't feel like getting the platform out

Yeah that's what I was thinking it was. What's the difference between the Pro model and regular model?

I thought about buying one of those platforms at harbor freight but I don't know if it would be tall enough. I even had a small scaffolding in my cart, but that's to big to be leaving in the driveway. Maybe a 4 step ladder will be okay. Maybe I'll buy one of those Mitt-on-a-Stick things and look for a better solution.

Thank you! It's a head turner for sure. My wife won't hardly let me drive it because she likes it so much lol

The only thing I don't like about it is the few issues with the paint. The tire wells in the back aren't fully painted and the chip on the back of the cab. IMG_20250125_220312.jpg

Mostly I use the plastic tub, I don't trust the platform on my inclined driveway, and I open the doors and stand just inside to reach the the front half of the roof, at the back I use the tub to step up onto the rear tire to reach the whole of the back half of the roof. I don't have sidesteps, just rock sliders, do there's nothing external to stand on. Even from the back I have to open the door to reach past the spare tire, so I just do it from the sides. When I used the reach tool I could just do it from the tub, but you can't really see what your washing close up, that's one of the reasons I stopped using it.

The mitt on a stick might be good for washing but what about drying/ applying a drying aid or aplying and removing wax.

I have a two foot platform similar to the one in the link however mine has a rung on both sides at about the 10 inch level. Makes it very easy to get on and off. Even with items in ones hands. Such as a pump sprayer. Use it on my Tacoma with a cap and used it prior on my 3/4 ton Silverado. A truck that size you will need something to reach the center of the hood as well.

As i said very handy for other uses around the house.
