What % on this forum are Prof detailers?

I also make a living detailing and spend time on forums learning and sharing in the evenings when I am not working.

I can say unequivocally that I am not a professional detailer because I do not derive any of my income from detailing................

That's my story and I'm sticking with it!! :props:

:whs:

See, I don't think you necessarily have to produce an income...just to be a professional. That's my opinion. There's a lot of people on here that would rather not detail for money. But, that doesn't mean they may not possibly be some of the best out there. IMO of course :props:

Besides, I currently make money detailing. That doesn't mean I know more than someone who doesn't pull income. Plus, say I quit detailing for money and started a new job. All the sudden I'm not a professional anymore?

If you ask me, a professional is someone who is knowledgeable beyond the norm in a particular field. In the field of detailing, and by that definition...I would say there's quite a few professionals on here.

Does being a "weekend professional" count? Im the MAN:buffing::laughing:

For some reason I resort back to my ju jitsu days when it comes to rating detailers lol!

You have white belt - learning stage and don't want to pick a fight with someone cause you have taken a few classes and know some basics!

Then Blue belt - can take anywhere from 1 to 3 years to get (depending on how much you do it).... you can destroy a white belt and most people that don't know what they are doing.

Then purple Belt - takes anywhere from 3 to 5 years to get - Here you have some great experience and techniques that would surprise anyone that has a lower belt or has never rolled before.

The Brown Belt - 5 to 7 years - Don't question their skills, respect them and learn from them!!!

Black Belt - 7 to 10 years - Have seen and done almost all techniques out there and can successfully pull out a win 99% of the time.

Granted who you learn from can make a huge difference here.

My guess is that Mike is a Black belt - as well as maybe only a handful of others here (1%). They have an answer for 99.9% of all detailing issues, can correct them, and understands the chemical processes and why the products used were the best and why they will hold up the best. If it has anything to do with detailing they have dealt with it!

:urtheman: :pc7424: :urtheman:

Maybe 2 handfuls of people are brown belts - they have been doing it for years and have seen 97% issues out there and can fix them with the proper products and techniques without blinking(3%).:dblthumb2:

I would think that maybe 10% are purple belts - they know what they are doing through experience and their techniques are good, but their is still quite a bit of technical and product use out there that they have not tapped into. :xyxthumbs:

I would say maybe 30% are Blue belts - They have enough experience to help a novice, and may even have a sense of being an expert but in truth need ALOT more experience.

Maybe 55% are white belts - here to learn for personal use and protection for their own car. :help:

The other 1% accidentally stumbled on here , made a profile, and forgot about it! :dunno:

Don't know why I put so much time into this, but this is seriously how I look at it outside of here lol! Ju Jitsu is very technique oriented and takes a very long time to move up in experience (more so than any other martial art) - I think this is very comparable to detailing.

That's one way to look at it! haha. Makes sense to me though. That really does pretty much break it down. Nicely said :goodjob2:

Is there a belt between white and blue? LOL

I consider my self a compulsive hobbyist. I want to have everything and try everything. I used to detail back in the mid 1990's when I was doing/learning body work as well.

Now I am recently back in to it, and it has consumed me. I know a good bit, but also know I have TONS more to learn and relearn.

Aqua belt? lol :D

So, B&B in Tennessee, Mike is a "sensei" and AutoGeek is our "Dojo"?
The analogy to the martial arts is a good one, but I also agree with some Sensei Mike posted a while back, professional is a state of mind. But I understand the intent of the question, how many folks do this for a living. Not me.

I'm one of the Aqua belts :buffing:

Enough knowledge and experience to be dangerous but under no condition am I to be considered a professional. Compared to most of my car buddies I'm a pro but when it comes down to it I'm just anal about how I treat my cars and they think it's a sickness....ok it is....

Almost every day someone here posts a hack job done by a "professional" who earns income so that is not an accurate measurement. There are also several of you who are probably pros but do not charge a dime. The term professional in any walk of life may be one of those elusive terms that is difficult to define in absolutes.

In the sense that the OP meant, no I do not do this for a living.

As far as who is a pro and who isn't, if you are paid money to detail you can be considered a professional even if it isn't your full time or only job. However, just because you are a professional doesn't mean you do good work. I see hobbyist of forums that do awesome work that blows a lot of "pros" out of the water. Yes they may be great at detailing, but if they don't get paid for it then they aren't professionals. It goes the other way too. There are tons of detailers that somehow convince people to pay them to do a totally crap job on their car. Yeah they suck, but since they are getting paid they are professionals.

I make a good amount of money detailing even though I don't do it full time, and I consider myself a professional detailer who does professional level work.

Oh, and to clarify when I say get paid, I mean you have a business or work for a business, not just get some money from your neighbor to detail their car. Thats not a pro, thats still a hobbyiest in my book.

Yes Mike is the Red Belt Sensei lol.

Glad to put an accurate yet fun spin on the thread :props:

Ok, so I am a white belt with two blue stripes. Damn that's a mouthful. Can I just say I am a pretty bad azz white belt? LOL

I think an aqua belt would be kinda pretty; but you'd have to be secure in your masculinity.
