What really grinds your gears

I'm sorry, you all don't get paid for your driving so you shouldn't be calling yourselves drivers.

/ducks for cover

I do! LOL

I'm a construction superintendent..........And I get paid for all my windshield time!

I get paid to drive. Just stating that in case it changes your perception of my posts.

Frank isn't here right now...
So I'll try to help him out a little :D

Bob

Thanks Bob. I saw a report on CNN years ago that the majority of deaths by tractor trailers are the fault of cars not giving trucks the space they need.

I can name a million things people don't understand about space. And I'm not saying that they're necessarily bad drivers, they just don't know or pay attention. Thats why they shoul sit in a truck to understand. People can't even stop at that HUGE white line or at the sign that says stop here on red.

I made a wide turn and purposely came close to the front of a womans minivan and she about lost her bowels. I rolled my window down and told her that's why that HUGE white line is painted back there.

Couple years ago two teenage girls never looked merging onto the highway and were killed by a big rig.

I once saw a guy merge in front of me never looked. He was deaf , signing to his passenger

One guy mentioned getting cut off just to exit the next ramp. That kind of thing happens to me everyday

I agree. Even driving a Sprinter van, you will realize how much more space you need compared to a car. Then ask people to imagine how much more space a truck needs if the Sprinter required that much more room.

Also, people have no idea where their car is on the road. One of the dealerships I work at has a car wash (don't worry, my car will never go through it) and all customers get unlimited car washes meaning it's quite busy. Anyway, lining people up to get their wheels in the track is a nightmare. People think they are perfect only be off by several feet.

I can relate Frank........

while in the service this was my primary work horse........but when it broke we would bust out the M911(pictured below)

I was the one and only that could operate the M911 in my unit.......so I saw a lot of windshield time in that thing.

these are internet pics but you get the idea.

This would be handy to detail undercarriages.

Here's a question for you gear heads. The original post what grinds your gears? I'm a pretty good driver but don't know much about maintenance. I once shifted my brother's old prelude without using the clutch. I was only able to do that once. Why is a trucks tranny set up so that I never have to use the clutch except obviously from a stop

Looks like you could do some damage with that thing

Yes we could.........here is the M911(my other pic didn't show up)
9k=

Is that a Paladin or a tank being hoisted?

That's a m109 self propelled artillery piece.....155mm if I recall..........I was in an artillery unit but our s was 8" howitzers(boom boom big guns) LOL

These babies would reach out and touch someone! 20 plus miles.

Funny how we carefully studied for our driving test, and intently tried to follow all of the rules and laws in the DMV handbook.

So why is it that so many of us have forgotten so many of the basic rules...like signaling intent to change lanes?!?!

^^^What's going to happen if I do go slower?^^^

Bob

Depending on my mood and which car I am driving. But I would probably get back around you and brake check you pretty hard. Of course slow drivers need that regardless of what they are doing, but to cut in front of somebody and then drive slow, that calls for a little harsher punishment.

People haven't forgotten the rules, they just realized that the rules were made by idiots, many of them outdated.

I have to admit, I only use my blinker when someone else can benefit from it use. Otherwise, I don't like the ticking sound, and I'm trying to extend the life of my bulb and blinker fluid.

Exactly. If my move is going to impact somebody else, like I am slowing down to turn into a driveway, I use them. But when I am driving down the freeway at 75 mph they serve no purpose. Nobody needs to know my intention if my move has no impact on them.

Back in the day:
We used to stand up and "float the gears" on the ol' 4-speed Muncie while going down the strip at Kil-Kare Raceway.

Then along came the NHRA scatter-shield-requirement to take away those E.T. savings.

I can only postulate that some trannies on the big rigs are set up for that type of shifting action. That...and double-clutching.

I also imagine that it would be easier on the body:
just so many miles in them thar legs!

Its sad that so many people are this careless.
If I was changing lanes and another car was also changing lanes to move into that lane at the same time I would really hope that they would have the common sense to use a blinker. Because I would hate to clip bumpers going 75 on the freeway because someone thought their blinker had "no purpose"

That's Funny:
I feel no trace whatsoever of fear;
it would be pure delight...and welcome.

See:
Other people can also have "depending-moods".

People haven't forgotten the rules, they just realized that the rules were made by idiots, many of them outdated.
That's just your opinion.
I'll say it's just a lame excuse.

You'd lose checking your brakes in front of this

Sounds fun. Im the MAN

Maybe the blinker issue is a regional issue. In Southern CA I find that using the blinker on the freeway really is telling the other person to speed up and take the spot you were going for.

I am pretty courteous to trucks. I will usually flash my lights and let them over if I see they are trying to get into my lane and people keep speeding up. Having towed a boat in the past I know how hard it is to get over when you don't have the power to speed up and take a spot.

Ah! Good one

Funny, I am the opposite. Unless the spot where you are going to turn is going to slow down traffic, such as a right turn with somebody behind you and you have to slow down for it, I hate when people signal. What does the signal mean on the freeway? Does it mean let me over? I am coming over? Am I suppose to back off if they turn it on when I am coming up on them in the lane they want to be in? Just make your move, I don't need you to advertise it to me. I don't even understand how using a blinker in a situation where everybody is going the same direction and similar speeds helps anything. Either you look and change lanes with nobody there or you cut somebody off, blinker doesn't change a thing.

As far as cutting me off, if there is a gap, take it, I don't care, just don't take it and go slower than I was driving.

Other drivers more than grind my gears, they blow my trans. Just push the pedal on the right down and go. Stop being so scared, stop hitting your brakes all the time, learn how to merge at speed, when you need to change lanes on the freeway and somebody is there, hit the gas not the brake, and your car can take off and on ramps faster. GO!!!

Sooooooo, you don't drive a BMW by chance do you? :D
(ducks and runs for cover from anyone on here who does)

Lol but seriously, use your damn blinker!
You can't assume people know what you're doing or going to do... Hell, they can't figure out their own driving!

I use to. LOL But I find that stereotype odd. I usually find that people driving crappier cars drive worse. Prius, Camry, mini vans, leafs, etc.

LOL I am going to have to stick to my guns here and say that in most freeway situations, my blinker does you no good. For one thing I am going faster than you. The second thing is I am paying attention to more than what's right in front of me.

I can without a doubt swear on my Rupes life that if you and I were on the same road together my driving would have zero affect on you. And even better, if you made a mistake and cut into my lane a little close to me but going faster, I wouldn't care at all. As long as you don't make me hit the brakes you can do whatever you want around me. :props:
