Guess I'm following the Mike Phillips career track...start out on your own, go broke buying pro supplies from Auto Geek:laughing:, start side business detailing for friends to pay mortgage. Trying to follow all the advice, but stuck on a business name.

For now, this will be in addition to my full-time job, only on evenings and weekends. Lots of 'Mom Taxis' for clients. Domains available, nobody appears to be using either name, but can't decide on:

Weekend Auto Detailng (says when I'm available, but "W" is way down in the alphabet for listings)

Toothbrush Auto Detailing (speaks to difference car wash vs detailing)

Thoughts? (including 'both suck, keep trying'?)

Well since you said I could use this, I will:

'both suck, keep trying'

:p

In all seriousness, saying "Weekend Auto Detailing" doesn't inspire much confidence with potential customers who will think "This guy is just a cheap shadetree hack."

As for "Toothbrush Auto Detailing" again, you'll have people thinking "WTF, toothbrush? That belongs in a medicine cabinet, not on my car!"

You'd be better served by something that speaks to the area you're in or something that inspires confidence in your work -- "Meticulous Motorcar Detailing" or something in that vein perhaps.

Any time you're looking at a business opportunity in a highly specialized industry, it's important to consider how an uninformed outsider will perceive the image you create for yourself and do whatever you can to manage that perception.

I am going to start out as a service this summer on the side of my job, and try and get ahead on paying for school if I make enough. If I make enough I may get a business license next summer and come up with a name.

You may want to start as service rather than a business to test the waters; that is, offer services and work for yourself, not a business entity. Unless, of course, you'd rather go full bore getting a business license, llc, insurance, etc...

When running ads in things like the Yellow Pages, using the letter "A" bumps you to the top of the list, that's why you'll often see things, like,

AAA Tow Truck Service

You could try that for a biz name too...

Here's one that's available that starts with the letter "A"

I'm not saying it's good but throwing the idea out there...

:)

You said it not me...both suck, haha. No worries, something will come up and fit perfectly. If you have to ask which one...then you probably don't like either one. When you come up with the right one, it just fits.

I just don't think the words toothbrush, and weekend should be in any detailing title. It's a little too straight forward. Besides, I don't think using a toothbrush really says high quality work is being done here. Of course we've all got a toothbrush laying around for some reason...but it's not really something customers admire as far as equipment goes, haha.

You also don't want a name that will limit you, or force you to change it down the road with growth. Weekend Detailing would require a name change if you went full time. I say keep trying!

Actually pretty good without sounding too contrived like "AAA Aardvark Detailing". Thanks for the tip, Mike.

"Mike the Detailer" sounded like a perfect fit, then I started reading your tutorials:cry:. Although the URL --does-- appear to be available . . .

Porsche Pilot has one of the best IMO.

"Art of Shine".

Maybe think something along that line. To me this name says everything.

I agree with Troy. Porsche Pilot has one of the best. All kidding aside, the right name will hit you like a ton of bricks. Most likely it will be around 3 in the morning so keep a notepad by the bed so you dont forget it when you wake up. Dont stress over it, you will nail it.

I thinned out my collection of domain names and that's one I let expire...

Okay... now it's getting deep... :poke:

Give me time my friend, I can make it much deeper! :)

Flash has a good point. Let's start with name and location. Location can sometimes play a big role in the creative process.

Integrating your location in your business name will also help when you go about registering a domain name. For example if you were to choose something like "Panama City Detailing" and register the domain, you will have a better shot at achieving a higher Google ranking. Just something to consider...

:iagree:

most of my best ideas hit me in the middle of doing nothing or something else all together.

That's good advice too and since most detailing business are targeted at specific geographical areas, anyone searching for a detailer in their area will tend to use the search terms,

  • Detailer
  • Detail Shop
  • Panama City (or fill in the blank)

Name is Mike, location is Portland OR. Yes, I could stick "NW" on a good idea, but that seems like a cop-out like AAArdvark.

What's the thought on .com vs .biz? If there was a great name, and the .com was used elsewhere far, far away to avoid confusion, what's the group think about a .biz?

The thesaurus is coming in handy. More ideas welcome here too, appreciate the help!

Lots of 'mom's taxis'? Put yourself in their mindset; what could get their attention & make them want to come to you? Maybe focus on detailing their kinds of cars, & if you're a mom it could be they'll want to give you their business instead of the local car wash detailer guys who do 10 cars a day.

More than once I've thought about moving to Hell, Michigan and opening a detail shop under the name "The Devil's in the Details"

Im the MAN
