Which polisher/buffer to buy for this situation

Just a quick update, what backplate should I order? I think i'll place my order tuesday or wednesday, i'm waiting for confirmation on the address from my courier...

And a couple of pics from teh mess. I tried so many ways of getting the paint to be visible, only managed to get a couple of decent ones with my camera phone.

The pictures with the black circles is just to point out how easily, with a microfiber cloth and finger grease, the paint comes out ( a ALOT of finger grease), also the paint seems to come off easier if I keep the area very wet and soapy... Now on the rubber trim... man that is hard as hell, not to mention the black plastic part of the back and front bumper... I'll try with clay when it eventually gets here.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for all your thorough replies, I finally managed to get my courier address sorted out. So I've got just a couple of questions before I Buy the things.

1. I would like to, based on how I've described the overspray situation in the thread, try and use the PC, with wax/polish or simply car shampoo and see if that removes the overspray? What do you think of that? If yes, what products would you recommend?

2. Claying time.

3. In the last page I've attached a photo of how dusty the car get's after one day of travel during the weekend, they're improving the roads to a 4 lane road, so there's a lot of dust going around, even some sections are dirt roads ( and that's right after being washed, only washing though, i've not turtle waxed for fear of "sealing" the overspray in). What would be your recommendation pre-claying to ensure that the surface is properly clean?
I Currently use this:
Amazon.com: Turtle Wax T-79 Zip Wax Liquid Car Wash, 64 ounces: Automotive

And what I do is, let the dirty panels soak in foam, then spray with hose, then soak in foam a bit more, then wipe of without any pressure with a soft car was sponge.

4. Though you posted what backing plates are, i've No idea which specific one to select :S ? So far I think this is the best choice : lake country 5 inch backing plate, 5 inch backin plate, 5 inch hook and loop backing plate

5. Re on the plastic trims, I really don't want to use any abrasive that will strip the finish from it and then I've got to dye it back afterwards, I've been searching in the forums and some people recommend baby oil, IPA or even clay, Those will my three attempts before trying anything more abrasive?

6. After I uses turtle wax polishing compound to clean the windshields, water seems to stay a bit more on them, i've seen a couple of rain products such rain-X, but do not know about any specific one, so again, which product would you recommend ?

From your response to my OP: you suggested:

PC 7424XP
Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay
Pinnacle Clay Lube
Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish
Pinnacle Liquid Souveran Wax

Lake Country Pads - Get 2 Orange, 4 white and 1 Blue

Just in case, I plan to get 2 clay kits, better to have extra to try on the plastic trims.
SO based on the above, how would you modify add/remove from the above list?
Sorry if I'm being a nag, but everything will take around 20 days to get here, so I need to be sure I buy everything correctly and be sure I don't miss anything, because it's not like I can go out and buy it right at the moment I need it.

7. Based on the dusty pic in the thread, what would you recommend to avoid getting damage by the dust?

8. On shipping, not sure if this is your area, but, do you guys send every item in a single bulk package?

And once again, thanks for your time !

Edit: For some reason If I tried to send this post I would get 500 internal server error, so I just posted then edited and pasted, but sat through several ours thinking it was something with AG servers... The same error when trying to PM this same message

Hi Mike,

A couple? It's all good but just to note, on ANY forum, you'll get more and better answers if you follow the tips I share here,

A tip to help yourself get great answers when you start a thread

In a nutshell, my tips help you to help yourself...

That said, let's see what we have here...

1. I would like to, based on how I've described the overspray situation in the thread, try and use the PC, with wax/polish or simply car shampoo and see if that removes the overspray? What do you think of that? If yes, what products would you recommend?

2. Claying time.

Claying is the most effective way to remove above surface bonded contaminants off of hard smooth surfaces. There's a pad made to hold a clay patty onto the face of a foam buffing pad and you can try that if you like but it's just as fast to use your hand.

Trying to use a foam pad on a PC with a compound or polish might remove "some" of the overspray but what normally happens is the foam pad "glides" over the contaminants and simply makes them shiny.

Clay by hand... (seriously)

Your current method sounds like it's working, the BIG idea is to remove LOOSE SURFACE DIRT when washing a car so it cannot enter into any of the other procedures.

In my e-book, I recommend if possible to get a backing plate that's made or offered by the same pad company as that way the hook-n-loop designs will be compatible. So if you're using Lake Country Pads then get a Lake Country backing plate.

Try Goo-Gone, or Goof-Off or the product in this thread or the products the person in this thread used...

I recommended the minimum number of pads but as a general rule, more pads are better. The Advanced Finishing Polish is a Fine Cut Polish, that is to say it's not very aggressive. If you want to remove swirls then get the Advanced Swirl Remover. If you want a strong compound then get a bottle of Ultimate Compound. Better to have both on hand if you need them than to become frustrated because you don't have them.

7. Based on the dusty pic in the thread, what would you recommend to avoid getting damage by the dust?

Wash and dry the car thoroughly before you start. After you're all finished, you can't prevent dust but you can always wipe it off or wash it off, it will always be an issue as it is for all of us.

8. On shipping, not sure if this is your area, but, do you guys send every item in a single bulk package?

IF it fits into one box it will go into one box. If two boxes are needed then two boxed are used.

And once again, thanks for your time !

The 500 Internal Server Error happens when just the right characters are typed into your message. It happens to me once in a while. Because I will often times have a lot of time invested into a reply I will copy and paste my work into an external program like MS Word or Notepad before clicking the [Submit Reply] button so if I get the error I don't have to re-think and then re-type everything I wrote.

Like I'm doing right now...

:D

Sorry for the multiple replies...

Something in your code was causing my "single" reply to give the the White Screen of Death, so I broke it up and kept tweaking it until I got all my answers to your questions posted.

Not sure what the problem is but I'm glad I saved my original reply because after I hit the submit button I got the white screen of death.

In the future... always save your text to an external program no matter what forum you're on so in case something goes wrong you have a back-up. (I just did this and it saved me a ton of time)

Also, try to limit a single post to only 2-3 questions. This makes it easier for our other forum members to reply which means you get MORE and BETTER answers.

This is how you help yourself to help yourself...
