All,

I own a black 2015 Mustang GT. The car is hand washed by me and always garaged. I would say I have light to medium swirls and water spots, and would like to correct these using the PC 7424 XP (this will be my first time using a DA polisher, so please bare with me).

My main goals are:

A. High gloss, swirl free finish with a durable layer of protection.

B. To remove little to no clear coat/paint.

I plan to use a quick detailer or drying agent after each hand wash to maintain the finish.

After my research, I have found a few combinations of products that I am thinking of purchasing:

1. CG Blacklight & Hybrid V7 (I feel like this isn't durable)

2. Blackfire Gloss Enhancing Polish & Blackfire Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection

3. HD Speed & [Insert LSP here]

Once I have my products selected, I will need help selecting the proper pads... Im the MAN :buffing:

I am also open to other suggestions! Thanks in advance for all of your help!

When I first joined here years ago, Mike suggested the Wolfgang twins to me. Worked perfectly and was a great way to start out. Take a look at them.

Post some stang pics too! 😀

Thanks for your input guys!

I think for my first time around, I'd like to fill in the swirls with the PC before I start removing clear coat. I know Blacklight has a minor amount of abrasives inside and can actually correct the paint if used correctly -- which I don't mind!

Can anyone chime in on the products that I listed in the OP?

@StangFan25 -- Pics will follow after my detail!

HD Speed and HD Poxy

Or your Blackfire choices, skip your first choice, I've been down that road, no durability.

I'm detailing a Black 2015 370Z this weekend, most likely with Speed and Poxy or HD Polish and Poxy, depends on how much help it needs.

Chemical guys combo will not remove any defects and you said your goal is a defect free surface. So that's out, as Blacklight just fills in and had a light cleaner in it.

Blackfire and the HD option are the best route. However if you plan on a swirl free finish, I don't know how bad your Mustang is with defects doing a one step , is hard for 90% correction. (Depending on the polishing friendliness of your paint)

HD speed has a decent cutting ability but a perfect finish is going to take multiple passes especially with a Porter cable.

So it might.be in your best interest to do a multi step polish.

HD Speed except 50-75% defect removal sometimes you can get perfect depending on severity color and the paint.

HD Speed can give an amazing reflection and amazing slick feel.

And is a time saver, you can do a whole car and get 50-75% in about 4-6 hours as a multi step would take 10 hours +

Just make sure you use an inspection light to make sure your progress is to satisfactory level. Just don't assume all the swirls are gone !

The Boss polishes are great
(Correcting cream a medium grade polish with great cutting ability finishes LSP ready it's an amazing polish)

The Wolfgang polishes are great
HD polishes are great
Menzerna polishes are great
I have no experience with Blackfire polishes but seen them displayed on show car garage and they look like a quality polish.

So it all depends on your expectations and how much time you want to spend !

Hey JoeGT - I've worked a lot with Blackfire products and they are still one of my favorites. I would say the Blackfire combo you mentioned is a good one. Without seeing pics it impossible to know if you need something more aggressive but the rule of thumb is to use the mildest products and the pads with the least amount of cutting power to do the job.

Just a note, I did that whole BMW listed on AG's 3D page in about 4-1/2 hours. That included washing and wheels and tires.

I did 5-6 passes on the entire vehicle with HD Speed and Sealed with Poxy. And I didn't bust it out.

The cool thing with Speed is you just bump up the pad aggressiveness and get better results. I typically use an orange pad.

Whichever route you choose to go the best advice I can give you is stay with the same line of products. It will serve you well over the long run.

Thanks everyone!!

So I think I'm leaning towards the Blackfire route. Any suggestions on which pads, as well as speed, to use with my PC 7424 XP?

How about for the HD Speed and HD Proxy?

I would look into to carpro products Essence and Reload. That is what I used for my Audi for winter protection with great results but mine is a silver gray which is quite difficult to see the swirls and holograms on. That is what I would try first with a MF pad on a test spot and see if you get enough correction and filling with just that or would need to do a two step correction.

This spring I plan on doing my Audi with Essence topped with WGUC and had also planned on doing my brothers black Escalade the same but may just just do the Essence/Reload until I see how my Audi holds up with the WGUC when being used with Essence.

For you the thing with Essence is that it has some correction ability and some filling ability along with durability that he other products don't have and the reason for the Reload topping is for the hydrophobic properties not for gloss or protection.

Thanks everyone!!

If you go with the Blackfire route, one option with pads is the orange LC for the gloss enhancing polish and the red for the All Diamond. The gloss enhancing polish is mild so you will need the orange for sure.

It really depends how hard or soft and thick the paint is. Regardless I went crazy hard and did 20+ passes with a PC combined with the most aggressive pad and compound combination I own (CarPro Denim Pads and M101 compound) and hardly took off any clear coat (still had about 170+ microns of paint/clear left).

I would recommend a two step correction to get the paint perfect (sight unseen)...

If it were my car I would try a medium polish like M205 and see if that does the job if not step up to Ultimate Compound/D300 and then M101/M105 if the Ultimate Compound/D300 doesn't work well enough. If you compound you'll need to polish after (I recommend HD Polish/CarPro Reflect/Menz SF4000)

As for LSP I recommend a Coating (WG Uber) or a Sealant (FK1000P)

So I was recently recommended the GG6 DA polisher. Do you guys think I should go with this buffer?

I had my heart set on the PC 7424XP, but was wondering if this machine is superior, yet safe for my noobish self!

Griot’s Garage Random Orbital Wolfgang Duo

PC7424xp and the GG6 are the same type of machine. Both free spinning DA's. My feelings on it is the GG6 is a better machine. More correction abilities as well as just a tad bit faster

So...JoeGT...are you feeling like you are making progress in your choices - lol.

Helpful info... thanks!

Not at all. There is so much crap out there, and it seems like they all do the same ####!

I think I might do the GG6 with the blackfire combination. But then again, the HD combo seems like it has more correction ability.

There are a lot of great products out there. Most of us have personal bias/preference towards certain products. In all honesty I think you will be happy with which ever products you choose.

I suggest just getting a kit and building from there.
