I come home from work yesterday and my dogs are going nuts in the back yard. At first I thought some jerk was on the other side of my fence whistling and making them bark. A little later my wife asks me if that was a nest of some kind in the tree just on the other side of the fence. So I go look, the dogs are still going crazy and as I get closer, I realize that they've "treed" a small (about the size of a large, fat cat) GROUNDHOG!
The whistling I heard was coming FROM the groundhog. That's when I had a flashback to my grandfather calling them "Whistle Pigs." I'd only heard one make that noise once before and it didn't immediately register what it was.
I tried taking a pic, but the sun was at the wrong angle to let me get a clear shot. We had to MAKE the dogs go inside and about an hour later, it got out of the tree on its own.
Of course, when I let the dogs back out, they went crazy trying to figure out where the groundhog had gone. It took THEM about an hour to stop actively looking for it, and the rest of the evening, they still went to the same part of the fence, "just in case" it had come back.
