Why do men buy their wives black cars?

Laura,

The answer to your title question is because they don't know any better.

Bad behavior in maintaining vehicular cleanliness is not unique to either men or women, but I have observed the following behavior in this man and this man's wife: When I drove a beater, having no pride in the appearance of the vehicle, I would allow quite a bit of garbage to accumulate in the passenger footwell and other areas. More so than my wife would allow in her car. Whereas she would frequent the gas station car wash (company car, company dime), I could never be bothered to wash my car at all. The car, in all fairness, looks like a garbage scow, what with its 16 years of clearcoat failure and all. The work to benefit ratio of washing it is poor. When washed, it looks like a washed garbage scow.

Currently, I now drive a 2.5 year old 2009 G37, my first new car after more than 20 years of driving, certainly a nice car worthy of taking pride in. My wife, as a result of the elimination of the corporate vehicle perk, now drives a 6 month old 2011 G25, her first new car after about 20 years of driving, and also a nice car worth her taking pride in. Guess which interior looks new? Yep, mine.

I can't really say I've spent much time cleaning the interior of my car in its 36,000 miles. A few swipes with megs QID with a cheap microfiber cloth. And even that practice went on hiatus about 10 months ago. Rules in my car: No eating in the car. No drinking except water to avoid dehydration. I don't leave stuff in my car. I don't transport stuff in the passenger compartment. Stuff goes in the trunk, preferably in the cargo net when possible. I don't transport trash, period. I don't use my car for storage.

My wife, bless her heart, in spite of my urging to the contrary, pretty much ignores all those rules in her car. Crumbs on both leather seats and everywhere in between. Evidence of coffee and soda spills in the cupholders and even, gasp, on the seats. Stuff, junk in my eyes, accumulates in the door map holders. Bottles, seemingly left for me to recycle, left in the cupholders and even on the floor, even on the seat! Traces of makeup, compact discs strewn about. Charger cords, baby wipes in the package, baby wipes out of the package, complete with lipstick and/or makeup residue, often stuffed in the little 2x4" cubbies in the door arm rests that I don't even remember the proper name for because I don't use them! Even the little velcro attached collapsable hanging garbage bag that adorned the back of the passenger seat of her company car of yore managed to find it's way over to to her new car. It is not collapsed, no sir, it is constantly full, in spite of my best efforts to empty it for her on trash day. In a mere 7000 miles and 6 months, the interior of my wife's car exists in stark contrast to that of my own. Now I can understand why my dear wife does not clean the interior of her car. I will even allow that there is justification for her to avoid doing so. However, it gives me no pleasure to say that the proactive effort to keep it from getting that way in the first place just doesn't seem to exist on her day to day list of priorities. I suspect that having observed how clean my interior has remained for 2.5 years, my wife, in her substantial wisdom, reasons that her interior will somehow magically follow suit.

You make good points, but I have no desire working on a car that's in that current condition.

This was another one of my charity details. The car belongs to my neighbors who are going through a very difficult financial time. They are trying to sell it and the husband - having seen the hours I spend in my garage - asked if I could make their Acura look better. I put just a little over 12 hours in it; busting it the whole time. I didn't take many pics, so I don't have much to show.

All of the junk in the floor seems to have somehow protected the carpet. It looked pretty good afterward. And I got all that white stuff off the back door...

I totally understand having no desire to work on something like this! But it was about the only thing I know I could do to help them out during a tough time. And, honestly, if it were a mini-van or Tahoe, I couldn't have done it; that would have taken more time & product than I had - I do have a limit to my generosity!!

Laura, from what you've shown you have done an amazing job. The generous donation of your time has restored a lot of value in that car. My advice about the bumper cover is something the owner can do. Tell them to get some black touchup and just brush it on the scraped areas. It will take the eyes off that damage and most people won't notice it.

The bald tires?

I see that alot with clueless men and women.

I saw a dude once in some generic 90s sedan, I dont remember what it was. The front tires were just like that and the rears looks practically brand new. They were the same exact tires too. I have a feeling they have never rotated them once. It was rediculous.

Not trying to hi-jack the op's thread but this week a friend had me put brake pads on his astro van and I mentioned he was wasting his time. When he asked why I told him he wasn't going far enough to need brakes with the steel cord hanging out of his tires.

It's just an irrefutable law of nature. Women have clean apartments and trashed cars. Men have clean cars and trashed apartments.

And of course my crazy friend that has like 300 fast food napkins, carefully folded up on the floor, and a mini refrig that he bought 2 years ago, still in the box in the back of his wagon...but as another friend says, he has issues...enough to start his own newsstand...

Years ago I had a friend who had an Electra 225, when they we really big cars, mid 1970's. When asked why he spent so much on a big car and not a house. He said, "I can live in my car, I can't drive a house". The inside of his car was a always a mess.

but I have to ask if this is typical?

And if so, why is it that women - who obviously aren't careful - drive black cars that will show all this damage?

2 reasons

1. My guess after being in this industry for a long time now is that most people really don't understand the car paint. They don't know it's thin, they don't know it scratches easily and they don't know that removing scratches or any defects is a lot of work. They are clueless when it comes to the paint on their car.

I have a friend right now that has a fairly new black Jeep. Her husband wanted to give it a good wash job so to ensure he really got the paint clean he used a Scotchbrite pad on it.

When I looked at the paint I couldn't believe how horrific it now looks. They asked me if I would like to detail it for them and I politely turned them down because even if I fixed it they are not "car people" and not only would the hours of hard work not be appreciated it wouldn't be long before it would be right back to where it was.

2. Most people don't know the difference between a swirl and a squirrel

The difference between a swirl and squirrel

Kind of the same reason as I outlined in #1 but at least the article has funny pictures.

^^^^This^^^^......And:

There have been many theories
put forth by psychologists/behaviorial scientists, and others, that deal with certain attributes that they feel contribute to the: Male vs. Female decision making processes...the Right-side vs. Left-side brain "activities", if you will.

Because I have succumbed to these biases...
I find it paramount to have: 'up-to-date' insurance policies.

Nothing looks better than a new, shiny black car. Unfortunately, nothing is harder to keep looking new and shiny than a black car.

It's a great color unless you plan on leaving your garage.

Laura,

Excellent job!! :props:

I apologize if I came off rude, that was not my intention. I give you all the credit in the world for taking on this car. It's just a personal preference on my end. Again, nice job! ;)

You NAILED it!!!!

My girlfriend has a black car. I got lucky enough that she realizes how much work it takes to keep it looking nice.

I got her to stop taking it through the car wash. Now when it gets dirty she asks me to wash it.

I'm lucky in that my girlfriend has at least a little interest in driving and having a decent looking rig, but I totally understand what the OP's talking about. I work at a used car dealership, and the other day a lady came in with a black, 1 year old Jeep grand cherokee she wanted to trade for one of our Cadillac CTS's. Her jeep was nasty. Looked like it'd spent most of it's 1 year on the road playing parking lot bumper cars. Lots and lots of little dents and scratches and of course a million swirls and water spots. When our salesman pointed the damage out to her and mentioned it would affect the value we could give it as a trade-in she got really confused and said something like "but it's still under the bumper-to-bumper warranty, so they should fix all that for free."

I don't know if she was just drawing her own conclusions based on a lack of understanding, or the dealer who sold her the jeep fed her a line of BS, but either way, it was sad.

The reason is because husbands usually always make the decision on what car (and color) the wife will be driving. I see this mistake time and time again...

Nice job! :applause:

My girlfriend wanted a black car because quote " looks sexy and like the color". I convinced her to g at least blue and thankfully she did. As far as interior of the car, she does a great job. She doesn't allow anyone to eat or drink in her brand new cruze. She had a pos BMW that looks like it came from mad max. Sadly though she wanted to wash it with me and within 5 min she just gave up went inside and brought me snacks which I loved even more. I'm just happy she takes care of it to the best of her knowledge and willing to listen and learn when I talk to her. She even has her own emergency detail kit for bird crap and what not

To be sexist, and, so that a vehicle's color, black or otherwise, is kept out of the equation...
Another way to answer your thread starter question...
