Why isn't everyone using coatings if it is "better" than sealants?

I just topped my car with pbl surface coating. Went on easy, high spots were knocked down easy, don't HAVE to top it again for a long time. For me that is the difference. Having to apply an lsp in a few months vs doing so at my leisure. Plus being able to clay and not having to reapply an lsp.
I have also noticed that my wife's car hasn't gotten any bird turd etchings since being coated vs when it was sealed.

Back to the thread topic.....

Here's another thread with another drawback of coatings, like PBL v2 lol. Does anyone else have this issue?

http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...-pinnacle-black-diamond-v2-paint-coating.html

The more I am on this forum, the more I am leaning AWAY from coatings. hmmm

You mean someone washed and didn't completely dry their car so minerals were left when the drops dried? Nothing will prevent mineral deposits from being left when you leave tap water to dry on a surface.

I am not one to not accept a mistake. I just read that thread again and I do accept my mistake - I skimmed that post and did not realise that all he did was blow off and stop at that...

Apologies.

Just out of curiosity - Doesn't optimum say to use their Opti Seal on top of OC or GC (cant remember which) so as to prevent water spots when the coating is curing. Is this similar to the above issue?

What I mean is, I know the paint cannot be washed for a week. Is that why we seal with Opti Seal because if water lands on teh paint during the curing period it can cause spots?

I'm not knocking Optimum, just stating that I prefere end user feed back from amateurs and professionals to form my opinion on a coating because every company will always tout their own product as superior. For me it's better to hear from a guy who does coating installations every day or the people that have had a specific coating on for X many months/years to see what seems to do what.

Well, in my case, I only do Opti Coat details. I do not do "regular details". Does that count? :):):)

Yes that is a better way to put it I guess.

However, the curiosity still stands lol.

On another note: Lets say it rained today, and stopped after 3 hours and the sun came out. The water is gonna dry and cause spots. Now I want to wash it off, But I know its going to rain again tomorrow and the day after and occasionally during the week.

IF I don't wash any of these off for a week, could these cause water spots too? Or is rain water different from the Hard water you guys Stateside speak off? I am unsure what hard water is, I thought I had hard water here in Dubai, but I have never had waterspots that needed polish to remove. All this is for knowledge purposes, if I didnt make that clear :P

Absolutely it counts. However as a consumer I have no access to Opti Coat so...
I remember when someone on this forum interviewed Dr. Ghodoussi as well as Avi from CarPro about their own different coatings. Same set of questions and the answers were both that they believed their coating to be superior, which is what you'd expect. There really isn't a bad coating on the market but it's the end users choice as to what works better for them.

Maybe.... if you can answer my question in the above post (#163) ....maybe :P

P.S. What do you define as a regular detail? No coatings and just Sealants as LSP?

Its been my experience with M37 coating that the water spots will be superficial. They come off when you wash instead of etching into the clear.

Rain water can have impurities in it, but nothing like ground or lake water that has been in alkaline soil where it dissolves minerals. Our water pH here is in the 8-8.2 range. The soil is also alkaline.

IF I don't wash any of these off for a week, could these cause water spots too? Depends, do you have acid rain in Dubai? Or is rain water different from the Hard water you guys Stateside speak off? Safe drinking water has minerals and that's what causes water spots. I timed my Gloss Coat application wrong(or I listened to the weather people), it rained every day for a week.
Opti-Seal wasn't used because I didn't discover it yet.

A week later I washed with Reset and there wasn't any problems, just shiny clean paint.

PM Richy. He has installed Opti-Coat, Gloss Caot and Cquartz.

This makes little to no sense to me. Of course they think their coating is superior to other. Do you think a coating manufacturer is going to say our coating is good but so and so's is even better. Each coating manufacturer markets theirs own product and it's up to the consumer to choose whichever product they want.

Not even close in situation. The person who has water spotting on PBL is because he didn't fully dry the vehicle. Gloss Coat is not going to wash away if it gets wet within 24 hours of application. If I find that info I will post up the snapshot. I will have to dig through Yvan's post in the facebook optimum group.

By the way it is safe to wash Gloss Coat with ONR during the curing time. If I find that info as well, I will post up a snapshot. Optimum basis everything on product synergy.

Thanks Guz! I saw that post by Yvan about washing with ONR for the first week! Just was unsure about the Opti seal bit as he said it helps with curing and avoiding water spots, and it will shed in 2 weeks. My question was, if these water spots could be from any source and why they happen.

The best prevention from water spots are products like ONR (Optimum No Rinse) or any of the like offerings from other companies. Where I live (our home is covered with evergreens) I often have to use my pressure washer to get needles and such from the wheel wells, but otherwise rinseless washes are god sent. Not only is it a much faster way to wash your car, it reduces the chances of marring your paint and of course, no more water spotting. Try it!! The initial reaction I get from customers who "believe" in the traditional method, is head shake and NO NO NO! But, once they try it, they all fall in love with the ONR and easy of cleaning. Have an open mind, it could prevent a lot of headaches.

Very true. I turned my dad on to washing his gloss coated car weekly with ONR and the big red sponge. He likes it and prefers it over a hose and bucket.

I agree too! I have been using Rinseless for teh last 4 months and I could not be happier. I actually feel its safer + less cumbersome than my traditional 2bm!

Well I couldnt manage to read through all 18 pages of this thread lol. But tbh, I dont understand what some are talking about referring to coatings not holding up or not keeping the car clean. I have gtechniq exo v2 only on my car and I hardly ever wash it and its still holding up very well. No iron deposits, no orange peel and I dont get water spots. *shrugs shoulders*

my issue of waterspots is not from washing but instead from random water from the road, sprinklers that the wind blows as I drive by or any other weird random water source in the desert. the coating while does not stop them 100% after yesterdays wash, it is doing much better at keeping them at a minimal level then any wax or sealant
