Worst new car scent ever....

There was an article some years ago in C/D or R&T about how the mfrs. actually "tune" the new car smell to appeal to the customers. IIRC Audi was one mfr. that had really made it into a science. So, although your statement is true, I believe that today the mfrs. either select interior components based on what will outgas, and/or add chemicals to get the smell they want.

Hmm, Jeep (Chrysler) must have thrown that out the window since then. When I got my Jeep in January it was the strongest smell I've ever had in a new car. I couldn't wait for it to either lessen or just totally go away, it reeked. I suspect though since this is the first vehicle I've ever ordered and I took delivery literally 10 days after it was built, that everything was just in those first stages of outgassing. I'm assuming it's much stronger in the beginning.

Hate to say I told you so. :whistles:

Up until this point, I have never thought that about silver. Summit White looks awesome, along with the dealer installed matte black rally stripes. I'm not sure if I should remove them on the roof like they come from the factory?

Hey Mark,

Is the Summit White a traditional flat white with clear or is it more of a pearl white with tinny flakes? I know you'll post some photo's......and detail it of course! :props:

in my 2012 Summit White Camaro 1 SS. :D Honestly, it doesn't smell good. I can't post pics of the smell, but I will of the car! Options include: black rally stripes(dealer installed), back up camera, connectivity pack, hurst oem short shifter. The car is very cool!!!!

Nothing worse then bad smell in a car.

Just sell the car!

:xyxthumbs:

Hey Bobby,

It's flat white. :)

Mark,

Good luck with the new Camaro, I hear they're quite a car!! :dblthumb2:

One of the first things that struck me about my new mercedes (c300) is that it had almost no smell at all. I ordered the full leather seats so that elliminates a good bit of vinyl but still, even the leather doesn't smell much.

Good that they selected materials that don't have much off-gassing but kinda disappointing in a way.

When I read that article it was a LONG time ago, maybe 15 years...and it was about making high-end cars smell like leather, etc. Maybe Camaros, Jeeps, and bottom-rung (sorry) Mercedes don't fit that category.

No new Bulletin, so to say, but lot of our time is spent 'living' in our vehicles' cabin-spaces.

-I used to think it was so much easier just to breath-in the toxic fumes of bromides and chlorines;
accept the fact that these, and a couple hundred or so other chemicals, were the trade-off between:
New-car-ownership; and, how a person's mind/reproductive systems were undergoing chemical-alterations.

-But leave it up to the tree-huggers to douse that idea.
Many OEMs have fallen "victim" to demands for new, more, eco-friendly materials to be used in vehicle interior/cabins.

For example:
Recently I went to one of my favorite dealerships to look at several new-car models on their showroom floor. My favorite salesperson soon approached me with a two-tined question:
-"Hi Bob...So...What do you think?".
-And..(with a concerned look in his eyes)..."Are you alright?!?!

Suddenly...(with my head still a-reeling)...I had to blurt out:

"Just as soon as I opened the doors, I was almost overcome by: "The Smell"

-Then(after regaining my self-composure...and also realizing that I was still at a dealership) I, nonetheless, inquired:

"Jumping Jehosaphat/Judas Priest! what are these interiors made from"? (In other words...)
"Is it possible it's the bean-curd
that's making 'em smell like a turd?!?

NOTE... Today's stock-tip of the week: VTSYF

:)

Bob

Can you see out of the car to drive it correctly? I sat in one at the auto show and felt like I was peering out of a tank...

As far as the smell, you can lessen it some by taking a couple of friends out for burritos. You may not like the smell it's replaced with though. It's still the result of "outgassing"... :)
