You are wasting Your Time and Money, All of You!

Let me be the first to say I really, really, really enjoy this hobby. I am so passionate about detailing my cars, definitely OCD. But I must admit, it is a hobby that's somewhat senseless and almost pointless. IMO those of us who are into to this are in the 7 percentile of people. Most people could care less about how clean their cars are. The only time they really care is when they bring it home from the dealership. That "oh what a feeling" feel may last about 6 months and then they don't care.

I keep my cars clean to pickup superficial women that only go out with me because of my car :troll:

Tell him that the coal dust from the power plant powering his "clean energy" car will bond to the paint and need to be clayed off. LOL!

I work at a car dealership and I see cars that are almost new and they are pig styes. I dont understand it , and at the other end are people that take very good care of there cars . I was talking to a woman the other day and she had a 2003 Toyota Rav 4 hat had 217000 miles on it and it looked like new. Some people are good , some are bad, as far is clean cars are concern.

So says my know-it-all of a brother-in-law. :dunno:

He is a super smart guy, really, but he looks down on the rest of us average folks. He asked why I bother to wax our cars and doesn't get why people would pay me to take care of their cars. His point is paint is so good today that protecting it just isn't necessary. Yet he has a shelf full of car care product mostly McGuire's in his garage. I asked him about why he has all the stuff and he said every once in a while he throws something on the cars. I don't get it.

I'll tell ya this, my dads 10 year old GXP Bonneville looks better than his 1 year old Volt. My dad is a master at detailing though which only proves my point, well to me anyway. :dblthumb2:

Thanks for the vent,

Sounds like a volt driver lol

You could say with that attitude almost any hobby is pointless and a waste of time. As far as hobbies go, detailing is pretty cheap. It's pretty easy to go on AG and find products in each class that are inexpensive but still work very well.

Some hobbies can cost many thousands of dollars to get the right stuff. You could start detailing your car decently with a hundred dollar or so investment.

But I'd probably have his attitude too if I drove a Chevy Volt. Not many people are going to get whiplash turning heads looking at that car. I guess your brother is a pragmatist - which is fine.

haha I laugh at your guy's sense of humor. I think there should be more of it :whs:
"slap" haha

Lovin all the opinion and perspective! :props:

BTW, I have no problem with what people do with their stuff. I get it, some people don't much care to spend any additional time or money on the car, its an appliance. Heck the ones who don't mind spending money, but have no time, are the same people that pay me to care for their car. :dblthumb2:

I was just surprised at his opinion that its just a waste to even bother doing it, basically said its stupid considering the new car finishes.

You family member is correct if you are a three years and out person. Generally a once a mouth washing will keep a car looking nice for three years. If you lease a car you do not even need to worry about resale value.

I like a super clean car and will generally AIO it twice a year and wash it every two weeks. Under no circumstance will I pay some 300- 400 for a detail, unless I was selling a really high end car on the open market and it looked awful.

I know many of the members of this forum make a living from detailing, but it is the way it is.

300-400 for an awful looking really high end car? Who is going to do it a drunk off the streets? That's funny right there I don't care who you are :xyxthumbs:

That IS my BIL!

I think we are related to the same person. Just different mothers...LOL!

I agree to some extent that I've wasted a lot of time and money until I figured this all out. I discovered I don't need. 90% of the stuff I dicovered touching the paint a little as possible saves me money. I discovered that although I like a nice looking car as much as the next guy , most people couldn't care less.

I feel the same way. I admit Iam a novice and want to keep my cars looking nice. I have learned to use less items on my car to keep it looking good and not damaging the paint.

Believe me at was hard, there are so many products and reviews here. I has to quit cold turkey :)

Yup your right, there are a ton of great products here and deciding which one's are best for your application can be a challenge. The premise that was put before me was that it's a waste of time and money to even bother. In other words, using nothing is as good as using product designed to help protect. For me I just disagree that's the case.

I totally get where you are coming from though. :xyxthumbs:

Friends and family bust my chops about my OCD with cleaning my cars and house and taking care of all my possessions. I laugh in their face when I sell something on CL for more or equal what I paid, sold my last house to the 2nd person that looked at it for top dollar, traded in a leased car and made money on it because of the condition and mileage, I could keep going.

It's true that most people don't take care of their vehicles and could care less and I love those people. I use these people as leverage and a negotiation strategy. I always show the sales manager my lease return in person so he can see how meticulously maintained it is and spotless in and out and argue the fact that they never get a lease return like this and I saved them money by not having to have it detailed and keep it on their lot for a higher resale.

I think it's funny that a vehicle is the second largest investment that most people have next to their house they live in. But to them, their $30,000 investment is just a car to them.
I think all of us on this site are beyond OCD when it comes to keeping things clean, but I like keeping my stuff nice, especially when I paid good money for it.

Cool story. What makes him so above us "average folk"?
I see where ya goin. So look, ya ever meet that person, walk away and say to yourself, wow really smart guy/girl but kinda an azz, that's him.
Great education and a really difficult high pressure career that he has achieved a lot doing. well, being smart doesn't mean he got his full share of common sense.
The Volt purchase sums up why
Also (no bashing...just reiterating facts):

1.) Leaf and Prius owners are 100% 'Women'
2.) You hardly see a Male drive a Beetle with a flower in the vase.
3.) A $40,000+ Volt: Increases the cachet, Of Chevrolet

Bob

Too some people a car is just a car and there is nothing you can do about that. They don't see a need to take care of it like we do.

I like the way you think! HA

The last two cars he had were ten years old each and looked terrible. Maybe your onto something though, for some looking nice from a distance is good enough. It doesn't matter what the paint feels like or looks like up close.

BTW, where can I get $300-400 for a detail of most any kind? I don't detail for a living either, I detail cause I enjoy it and so I can take nice vacations each year. :dblthumb2:

Knowing him I sort of doubt it.

:iagree: Me too!!!

A full 90-95% detail in the NY Metro area by a top detailer runs that easy.

Also, if detailing is a hobby, none of my comments are important, because the detailer works on his own car and is just filling time,
