Hi all

How often should I oil the felt ring on the 3401?

Mike Phillips recommends every time you swap out the plate.

For those who only use one plate? I'm not sure..

I was also wondering if they are replaceable.

I would say after about a dozen vehicles or so if you are not changing out plates.

I've been using 10w30 motor oil but I'd assume there's something better LOL!

I've never replaced one and instead what I do is pry the felt ring out of the housing and flip it over. Then oil it and re-install the backing plate.

I'll see if we can't get replacements on the AG store. I know a few of the 3401's in the garage could probably use a fresh felt ring.

That would be great. What other wearable parts are there other than backplates (if so)?

I use a little bottle of Lucas Gun Oil. Full synthetic, red, high temp, and resists moisture.

I am using a dry lubricant my father in law uses for his mountain bike chain. I re-apply every time I pick the machine - its part of my prep routine pre-detail.

What is the felt ring's function?

It provides a partially flexible interface between the cast aluminum housing and the hard plastic backing plate to rub against should someone press down too hard on the buffing pad.

I used a machine oil I spotted in the tool depart of Lowe's.
