Had the opportunity to work on a friend's truck over the weekend. The Tacoma has about 150k miles on it and it was showing signs of age. It had been used to transport growing 6 and 3 year old boys and unfortunately kept out in the AZ sun 24/7. He came to me to make the truck look presentable again. During the consultation, I could tell that i would have some work cut out for me. Signs of oxidation was evident on the hood, no shine or reflection what so ever. It had spread to parts of the fenders, a pillars and doors. Here is my document on bringing life back to the Taco.

Headlights

Started off by taking care of the headlights. Tools used, Porter Cable with 3.5" Lake Country Grey Thinpro pad and McKee's 37 All In One Headlight Polish.

Engine Bay

Up next was the engine bay. Plenty of dirt had accumulated over the years. Pressure washed most of the dirt off, degreased with Meguiar's Super Degreaser and agitated with multiple brushes before rinsing off. Dressed with Meguiar's Hyper Dressing.

The hood was the worst of the panels. What it looked like fully decontaminated and prepped for compound and polish.

The owner was thrilled to see the condition of the truck and I was relieved. I did the best I could on the hood with the condition that it was in and I was worried he wouldn't be happy with how it turned out. If anyone has any tips on extreme oxidation, please feel free to share. Anything to speed up the process would be awesome. I hope everyone enjoys the document, if there are any questions, please let me know. Thanks for taking the time to read this article, til next time. Duy out!

Great work!! Excellent turn around. Just gotta test the panel find your best combo/process....differs from car to car, lotta variables. With oxidation and scratches I prefer to under promise then try to over deliver......tempering expectations sometimes is your best/safest route. I try to tell the owner up front that there may not be much I can do to fix/restore but I will do my best, it can kinda give you some flexibility on how much time you want to spend trying to fix/correct. If you can fix or at the very least make it look reasonably better then great.....if not then at least you've had that conversation.

That was one heck of a turn around. Amazing results, especially the engine bay, head lamps and hood!

That clear coat looks like it is a couple AZ summers away from failure. I think you guys down south get clear coat failure in half the time as up north. A garage and a good LSP are a necessity to you guys:)

Great job! The Toyota Tacoma looks awesome.

The bottom line? The customer loved the results!

There has been some discussion here lately of scratch repair, how aggressive to go, paint thickness and the importance of PTG's. That hood would've been the perfect application of taking some PTG readings and going from there however you did a great job of extracting as much shine as you could safely. I also practice jkrig's approach and never promise the customer anything more than "I'll see what I can do".

How did you find the difference in M105 and Jescar's compounds? 2 different abrasive tech's and haven't tried Jescar yet. Also, what LSP did you finish with?

Again, the customer was happy. That's really all that matters. Nice work!

Wow! That's an amazing turn around.

How did the Jescar polishes perform on the soft Toyota paint? They don't get discussed much and I often forgot they are on the market.

Great work!

How long did it take you? What did you use on the side mirror covers?

Which product(s) did you use for the bumper plastics?

I used Adam's Undercarriage Spray on it, brought life back to it instantly.

Yeah that was my approach as well so far. Just wasn't sure if there was a more efficient method out there. Under promise and over deliver is my motto!

Great turn around!

Thanks!

I need to invest in a PTG. It would have been extremely helpful in this situation. I kept the M105 around to see if it would make a noticeable difference and on the extreme oxidation, it didn't do much. I loved how the Jescar similar to Menzerna has more of the oils in the compound so that it doesn't gunk up when working on the tough spots with oxidation. In the past, if I tried M105 or other similar types of product, it would be so difficult to remove on oxidation and I would have to basically spray with water and correct wet to get results. The Jesar has allowed me to work on the trouble areas with no issues and removes easily as well. And as far as LSP, I used WGPS 3.0.

Nice work indeed... one of the best transformations I've seen in a while! :)

Thank you!

It did an amazing job on the paint. Was extremely easy to work with.

Great work!

How long did it take you? What did you use on the side mirror covers?

I believe about 8-10 hours in total. I lose track when I take breaks to stay hydrated and cool working in 100 degree weather.

Great job. I wonder if a regular quality compound would do just as good as the headlight compound?

On a side note, Jescar polishes are overrated, IMO.

Whoa! Huge turnaround.

Thanks!

Wow! Night and Day difference! Beautiful work!!

Thank you!

What did you use to revive the side mirror covers?

Forgot to answer the second part of your question earlier. Menzerna 3-in-1 on the side mirrors.

It sure would. I bought the McKee's because of the "specific plastic abrasives" but I've used other compounds and have gotten the same results. I most likely won't refill the bottle once it's out.

Great Work! That almost doesn't look like factory paint since its oxidized so bad. That's very bad for a 2010.

Great 50/50 shots! Very nice work, pics and write up you did! Thanks for posting!

Great turn around and overall fantastic work.

You asked about what products might go faster and make the project easier so i will share that I love Lake country purple wool pads for cutting.

I think you would find it they would greatly expedite the correction process vs. the orange pads, without any compromise and finishing quality.

I definitely think the orange pad will finish better than the purple wool pad.
