A friend sent me an article on-line that said last years model Toshiba HD-DVD player that was selling for 399.99 is being blown out as a Wal-mart and Best-Buy in store special only for 99.99. I called the local Wallyworld and did find out they had several but sold out on Friday....

I found out this same unit (something like model DA2) is being sold at Circuit City for 129.99 also. 170.00 off their current list price of 299.99. And thru the end of the year they are giving away 5 free movies with its purchase thru the mail.

Kinda a heads up for anyone getting into the HD-DVD market and wants a nice unit at a reasonable price. While Blu-ray took the early lead, the online consensus seems to suggest that HD-DVD is coming back quickly with cheaper units and cheaper movies with same great output. Not here to argue the outcome, but certainly alot cheaper than my PS3 that until now has made a better player than game machine.

Totally :iagree: with you, is incredible how the market can change in such a dramatic way. And the worst of all is that who knows what format is going to prevale.

Thanks for the heads up Scott. I'm currently waiting for more channels to be available via Directv before I go HD(need TV too). But when I do, I'll definitely be looking for an HD DVD player(we like to watch a movie or two on the weekends). Everyone should post when they see a good deal such as this.

I went to Wally World tonight to buy this Acer Laptop they have advertised for $348 << yes not a typo!! Last one they had and I called like 5 Super Wal-Marts. It's a Christmas gift for my mom :)

They are having hidden items every week on sale so every Thursday check their website print ad.

The store I went to had probably like 15 of the HDDVD players from toshiba. It will play 720p or 1080i..

Oh yea if anyone is looking for deals always check Slickdeals.net - Your Daily Source for the BEST deals on the net before you buy something, you may find the needle in the haystack. Let your fingers do the walking :)

That is a very nice deal indeed. I just got my HD-DVD player (Toshiba HD-A2) over the summer and I absolutely LOVE it. Ended up getting it on sale for $249 with 5 movies free from Best Buy plus 5 free movies via mail-in. Used my CC rewards points for a $100 gift card, so I made out pretty well in that deal. I would recommend HD-DVD to anyone with a HD set, it is a thing of beauty.

the only dif between the a2 is the 1080p out rite? man i want that player if its only 100 something...ohhhhhhhhhhh best buy here i come!

Correct, the A2 does not output to 1080p. For me it was not an issue because my DLP is 720p native resolution. (its almost 3 years old now, so 1080p was not an option)

That's a great deal, but I think I'm going to wait and see who wins in Blue Ray vs. HD-DVD before buying.

Were ever the porn industries decides to go will win. Go deal indeed from $400 to $100 is awesome.

For the money, it's cheap as chips. I heard it's not a special price though. I heard that $99.99 is _the_ price on this player.

Personally, I would wait and get one that plays both HD-DVD and Blu Ray. I don't want to stack two different boxes on top of each other.

This past Christmas I got a new big screen plasma hd tv and have been blown away by the clarity of the picture and I'm anxious to by a HD/BlueRay
player. I was told of the $99 dollar sale at Walmart but was unable to find
any in my area of NJ. My son showed me how I can watch HD movies through his Sony PlayStation 3. There's a couple of plugs he puts on the side of my set and there it goes, HD DVDs play great. OK, it's only a temp.
solution till I find the right machine for me, but at least I can watch HD for the time being. Prices will be droping quickly in the months to come.

It's funny 'cause I'm seeing a couple of people selling this model player on Craigslist (one with 5 movies for over $200, and the other just the player alone for either $125 or $150).

There is at least one player that I know of that does play both formats, I believe LG makes it. However, I have heard pretty many complaints about it personally and on the web, and the last I checked it was quite pricey. I personally will probably not pick up a Blu-Ray player for quite a while unless it wins the format battle. For my tastes HD-DVD has more of things I like (interactivity, online exclusives on the player etc), plus the dual combo discs (HD-DVD and standard DVD) is awesome to have. I can go to a friends house and still watch the movie on their standard DVD with a dual-combo disc. That's really what sold me on HD-DVD.

Windshield advice...

Just got a really tiny tiny chip from a rock in my windshield. It is not large enough to be a concern but would like to do something about it if possible. Brand new BMW 550i. Can that be buffed or poilished out?

Way to come from left field;answer no.
killrflake you can also buy a DVD HD converter so you can watch your existing non hd movies in HD format. I picked up a Denon 557 from circuit city for $130 and it works awesome. Older dvds looked grainy no matter how much I messed with the settings. Denon made then look darn near perfect on my Samsung 32'' LCD HD wide screen. Affordable and it will hold you until prices drop and funds are available.
Buy the Denon HDMI/1080i Progressive Scan DVD Player and other DVD players at circuitcity.com

Stuff is getting cheap today, I remember years ago picking up a portable cd player that had wireless remote control (now that I think about it remote control for portable cd player kinda pointless? lol), and it was like $200. You can go to Brandsmart and get one for 10 bucks now.

I have to admit: I have a very nice Sony ES DVD player which connects via HDMI. That in conjunction with a Bravia, it looks pretttttttttty damn nice! And you don't have to mess with the more expensive DVDs or format wars.

If you really really have to look to see the difference, I wonder if it's worth spending money on. As everyone says, prices will keep dropping.

I personally find the HD-DVDs or Blu Ray DVDs too expensive.

Very good point p1et, prices are sure to come down even more. Before you couldn't grab an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc for under $30. Now you can get them as new releases and on sale at Best Buy for around $20. Plus, you can get some really good deals on Ebay as well.

Unfortunately you are wrong. Machine was listed originally last year at 499.99 and dropped to 399.99. It is now offered at most retailers at 299.99. Only three stores have dropped it to 99.99, and all three will sell the newer replacement unit and have in stock currently for a price of 299.99 on average. (I do think more will drop price to move old units soon however, but just think the 5 free discs sell for 20.00 each).

My Home Theatre magazine rated this original machine at "very good" and only complaint was slow 25 second start up. Kinda like my Sony burner and well, perfect time to get some popcorn. And there is a very big difference between standard "progressive" dvds and both blu-ray and hd-dvd even on newer sets. Nice part is this 99.99 machine will play "normal" dvds too and convert them to "progressive" meaning only one machine is really needed.

As for the 5 disc rebate , it is offered directly from Toshiba. Thus anyone buying the machine should be able to get the freebies by mail, unless purchasing thru Ebay or Grey Market items. Download the PDF coupon on site and fill in and mail to them but choices are limited.
