DFB's Garage

A new year, a new DFB spec calendar.................

Here's hoping 2023 is better than 2022!

Ok, so it's taken me a while, but I'm ready to apply my first ceramic coating.

Product of choice is going to be Gyeon Pure EVO, the Jaguar my test subject.

Now, the car itself won't need extensive correction, but I will be doing a once over with either Carpro Reflect or Carpro Essense.

My question to the brains trust is, will I see a benefit from using Essence as a primer with Pure EVO?

Can't wait to get stuck into this project, it's going to be part of another stay-cation at the end of January.

I’d use the Gyeon primer polish product for the Gyeon coating.

I used Essence with CanCoat and got a full life. If your ordering easence I would probably use Primer but if you have it Go ahead and use it.

Essence lays down what they call “semi permanent fillers and a “layer of Sio2 protection. That should work under any coating.

I will be using Essence on my Pure Evo. I still Eraser wipe like car pro recommends.

Ideally yes, I would prefer to use Primer but I already have a near full bottle of Essence.

I most certainly don’t doubt your choice of “Pure Evo” but was wondering what took you to Pure rather than Mohs. It seems that Mohs gets the hype and Pure is not as popular. I have a Matador Red Mica Lexus and have a bottle of Pure simply waiting for the Canadian winter to pass. I chose Pure because of the candy like appearance (Can coat Evo is on it now and looks great). I wondered if you chose Pure for a similar reason.
I certainly will look forward to seeing your results on your Jag. I expect it will be awesome.

A couple of reasons why I decided to use Pure EVO.

I wanted a forgiving coating to learn on, and by all accounts, Pure EVO sounds like it has a nice long working time. Mohs sounds awesome but I won't need it's longevity on a garage queen. And, as mentioned, the "candy like gloss" had me convinced, which I think is going to look great on the Odyssey Red paint.

This was the last time I detailed it, using Carpro Reflect and coated with Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant.

It's been a loooong week. Summer is well and truly here, along with horrible humidity. I cooked myself on Sunday with 36 degrees and high humidity after a savage storm the day before. Yesterday I got rained on as I continue to attempt to catch up after Covid. So today was all about low stress, and thankfully there was a cool change overnight.

And joy of joys, my most recent order turned up just before I started on the Ranger.

There are some new items in that order, some favorites and a freebie thrown in too. The Shine Supply Shift will now be my general use soap, replacing NV Snow for the meantime.

I just did not feel like getting the pressure washer out today, so it was a rinse-less for the Ranger. Got to use my new iK Multi sprayer for the first time too.

I love how ergonomic that sprayer is to use, from the actual holding and spraying part to the way the head screws onto the bottle.

The drying aid was today's new arrival, Shine Supply Punch It.

Punch It is a Si02 infused quick detailer. It has a similar scent to Meguiar's HCD and acts and feels like Adam's Slick & Slide. If you told me that this product was made by B&B/Adam's, then I wouldn't argue with you. Overall, I like the product, it's very easy to use and offers nice gloss and slickness.

Another new product, Auto Finesse Spritz Interior Detailer.

Spritz has some very mild cleaning ability combined with UV protection and anti-static properties. It wipes on easily and leaves a matte finish.

I have some time off coming up at the end of January, I already have two detailing projects in mind, plus another that landed in my lap today............

Glad to hear you like Shift. I did not think it was good enough to purchase it again. I forced myself through a gallon. It just did not do anything special that made it stand out. It definitely does not have the cleaning power of Reset for a vehicle that has a coating on it.

Heard good things about punch it. I have a little bit of Ignition and at first I enjoyed it but then I started to notice it would be streaky and smeary. It for relegated to wheels and door jambs. I do like Throttle for something that does not leave anything behind on the surface. It does not offer slickness as it takes the slickness that is already on the surface. This is essentially a dream maker type product.

Jeremy has a blender here in California that blends for them.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated and certainly shows how not every product works for everyone.

I have sort of fell in love with Shift ever since I bought a 500ml bottle to try out. You are correct that it won't approach Reset for cleaning ability or slickness, but then not many soaps can match Reset let alone exceed it.

Foam quality is runnier than Reset or the NV Snow this soap replaces, that is not necessarily a good or bad thing. I also love the scent which is not unlike the coconut/lime fragrance used by P&S in Absolute.

As a base line soap for general maintenance washing, it gets the job done. I was also considering Optimum Car Wash for this role, which I find has a similar foam consistency and free rinsing characteristics to Shift, although I got a pretty decent discount on Shift this time around.

Looking forward to the entire write-up/pics of the costed Jag

I used Gyeon Pure EVO on the EN and a great experience! I had to install it outside and working time is one of the things that sold me

Excellent, I remembered you used a newer Gyeon coating but couldn't remember which one.

HELP!

I coated this car in Can Coat about 6 months ago. This past week, the owner has found this on one side and hood of the car, not removed by a wash with Bathe............

My initial response was that it was an oil/tar type deposit, I tried some TarX on a test spot that only helped slightly. I then asked them to re-wash the car with Carpro Descale thinking perhaps they were water spots, especially after they had admitted it was hit by their sprinklers that draw from a bore. The Descale did not remove them, nor did a more comprehensive hit with TarX.

My next response would be a water spot remover, but they just don't really look like water spots to begin with. The next step I guess would be to polish them out and re-coating?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Im no expert so take it for what its worth, but that would be my next step.

Also to note, from the pic it looks like the spots i had the first time i used cancoat evo on the buick. I didnt use cure afterwards and it got rained on 4-5 hours after application. It looked like "ghost" water spots. Still there, going to repolish in spring.

Thats just an issue i had, in no way am i saying this is your issue.

Best of luck

Another non expert but I could be that the water sat there too long and etched the coating. If that’s the case your polish idea would be correct.

Time to polish as chemically there has been no effect.

Yeah I would try the water spot remover and if that doesn’t work… polish and recoat.

Clearing a backlog of new products to try today, some hits, some misses.

First up, a wash of the Ranger with Auto Finesse Lather -

Lather is a pH balanced maintenance soap and from what I can gather, is designed for bucket washing. However, it's also described as a high foaming soap, but looking at pics, I hope you can see that was not the case for me, offering little to no dwell period. The scent had a hint of citrus but was otherwise hard to place, the cleaning ability was ok and lubrication fair. Overall, not a winner..........a disappointment in fact.

The rest of the car was fairly straight forward. The tyres cleaned with Adam's Tire & Rubber, the wheels simply washed with NV Snow from a bucket, drying aid Stjarnagloss Silke.

The tires were dressed with Optimum Opti-bond. At this point, I would like to compliment the Turtle Wax Graphene Acrylic that was applied two weeks ago, it looked almost as good as it did when applied.

Interior wipe down was with another new product, Nextzett Cockpit Premium.

This is a nice product, leaving a residue free finish that just looks "clean".

Another car, another new soap in the form of Angelwax Fast Foam.

This is a soap I can get on board with! Stunning foam quality, long dwell period and great slickness. It just needs a scent to go with it and it would be almost perfect, the product being largely fragrance free. Overall, GSF and Reset are slicker, but this foams better and is cheaper too. A product worthy of consideration!

After a blow down, it was onto a new drying aid, Gyeon Ceramic Detailer.

Well, from the first spray, I knew this was going to be a problem. I will say, this car can be very touchy to drying aids, it was also hot and humid by the time I applied this product. However, it was a streaky, hard to work with product that I think I need more time with. I have heard conflicting stories about Gyeon Ceramic Detailer, some love it, some hate it. As it stands, I'm closer to the former.

The final product to try today was Angelwax Elixir and wow, just wow!

Elixir is an exterior rubber, plastic and tire dressing that is water based and designed to create "a waterproof barrier and leaving the treated surface like new, with a stylish finish." The consistency is like diluted Carpro Perl and applied very wet to the tire, needing 5 - 10 minutes to dry and cure. I loved how this leveled down and made these tyres pop, juuust enough gloss but without looking tacky. Two improvements are needed; first, ditch those stupid spray heads Angelwax, they are useless. Second, this is another unscented product from the brand, a fragrance would set this product on top of my list!

Two cars cleaned today with a wide assortment of products. Some certainly disappointed, some really impressed. That's half the fun, finding the gems hidden in a sea of contenders. And proof no one brand excels across the board.

Elixir i have tried now for a couple of year's great on rubber trim and cockpit premium has been my go to cleaner/protection for the last 5 year's.

I have 8 bottles of the stuff. :wowwow:

How many sprays were you using? The reason I ask is the more product on the surface the harder it is to work with.
