DFB's Garage

How many sprays were you using? The reason I ask is the more product on the surface the harder it is to work with.

I have had other feedback with similar comments. I just used it like any other quick detailer / drying aid. It seems Gyeon recommend applying a small amount to a damp towel, wiping, and then following with a final wipe with a dry towel. I will be keen to try this next time as clearly my technique was wrong.

That’s how you apply “dry”. In this video he’s pretty liberal with it in a dry towel as a drying aid. I think where he differs is doing a final buff.

For me point of a QD drying aid is to be able to just dry.

Also backwards in blowing out crevices before drying…

I have a feeling the humidity may have been playing a part in my issues with it yesterday, so will not write it off just yet.

Hey DFB how did you go with the water spots?

I will likely have to get it back in my garage and at some point. I will try to hit it with a water spot remover, but it's looking like I'll have to polish them off and recoat.

A few items arrived for my staycation projects.

Firstly, a gallon of ONR. I only ever bought a small bottle of this to see what it was like and ended up falling in love with it's versatility. I use ONR for a variety of jobs, mostly for door jamb wipe overs, interior cleaning, wiping down leather, wiping over engine bays, as a surface wipe in the garage, I have even started using it as a cleaner inside the house. Having said all that, I tend to use it least for what it was originally designed for, rinse-less washing, for which I prefer P&S Absolute.

The Gtechniq Marine product is not for me really, it will be going on the old man's boat now that it's out of the water while the flood damage is being taken care of at their property.

On to something I thought I would never ever buy again, a wash sponge!

I don't quite know how I will go using this sponge, I mean it feels like I'm going back to a time when I washed cars with a yellow sponge from the supermarket. In the same way I'm starting to gain an appreciation of rinse-less, perhaps this will be a similar change in tact.

And finally, Gyeon Pure ceramic coating, along with the appropriate Gyeon Primer..................I know, I caved in and got a bottle. Both will be used on the Jaguar.

I'm currently counting down the days until I take a well-deserved break. I have a number of projects I want to do during this time, the Jaguar being front and center. I intend to give the car a very light polish with Gyeon Primer, followed by an application of Gyeon Pure. I will expand on why I chose these products at a later date, but I'm really looking forward to this project. I also have to decontaminate and coat the old man's Wildtrack in Gyeon Can Coat, I have a mower that I will be servicing the carb on and the old Stihl 028AV chainsaw is going to get an overhaul.

Last year was a sh.tshow, capped off towards the end by the floods and final parting gifts of being diagnosed with Celiac disease and dose of Covid. Not to mention a relapse of depression in the final week of the year. I'm a walking zombie at the moment, so this holiday can't come soon enough! 7 days and counting!

I've been eyeing off some of the new style sponges as well, I'm sure you'll give it a good test, I can't wait to hear your impressions.

I used ONR to clean the vinyl floors in the FJ yesterday, like you say, a very versatile product.

As to the last part, I think I understand a little bit, at the end of last year I really wasn't happy at work. We were getting busier, more and more work getting piled on, but no help given, but other sections doubled their manpower. I was tired and sore at the end of every day, too tired on weekends to enjoy my hobbies, and I wasn't sleeping well. I knew I had an 11 day break coming up at Christmas. I spoke to my family over the break, everyone agreed, get the hell out of there. So I put my notice in the first day back, I finish up at the end of the month. Told them I need to do something different, but I don't know what, yet, maybe something part time. Funny thing, since I put my notice in, I'm sleeping better, my blood pressure is the best it's been in years, I'm a lot more relaxed. I won't say this is what you need to do, but you have to do what's right for you.

Yes, that is me too. I lose a lot of sleep over that place, playing stuff out over and over again in my brain. I have been there 18 years, so it's hard to find the courage to just walk away. I'm just so tired, bored, undervalued, sick of being asked and answering the same questions day in, day out. The work keeps piling on, more and more stuff ends on my lap because they don't trust or like the way others do things, so I get more and more stressed, angry and resentful. I rarely, if ever get feedback, except the occasions where I screw up. At this point, it's only a thing I do to make money, not a rewarding job anymore, just same old thing every day, every week, every month, every year.

Deyon, I know your like the rest of us and have more products than you need but can you get DIY Detail there? I've done an about face on Ivan and his new product line. I based my opinion on him denouncing soap and just needing RW & WW's and while he's right, to a point, he's come up with an awesome soap called Incredible Suds, name sounds simple but the product is outstanding️I took advantage of their Black Friday deal and since then placed a 2nd order for other products. Now I haven't been able to use their Iron Remover or the Quick Beads yet due to needs and weather but I've got HIGH EXPECTATIONS for Quick Beads!!

Another brand not offered in Australia.

By the sounds of things, this is a brand that is gaining lots of friends, so I could see it coming eventually. I want Griot's to come here too.

Can you get products from UK? If so Frost sells Griots.

A looooong week. A heatwave always makes for long days, I spent most of the last week with a hose in my hand keeping plants hydrated in the hot and windy conditions.

And so, another humid 38 deg C / 100 deg F day and I'm still outside on my day off, the Wildtrack needed attention ahead of a road trip later this week.

This front right had to be replaced during the last month, the tire shop in their infinite wisdom decided to spray them with some silicone garbage. I did two passes with Brake Buster at 100% to clean that off, and then Brake Buster from a foam cannon to clean the goop off the wheels.

The paint pre-soaked with NV Snow, followed by a wash with Bowden's Snow Job v2 after I got goaded into trying the new formula. :lol

Like the original, Snow Job foams like a champion with thick, clingy foam. But the elephant in the room is, does the new Snow Job actually clean, a common complaint of the original? Um, well, I think so. There were a couple of spots it didn't touch that needed removal after the wash, certainly better the v1 but probably not as good as Reset, Snow, GSF............... I did however appreciate the runnier consistency, which made measuring it out much easier. Slickness was medium level. One other slight drawback was some minor reactivation during the rinse process. On the whole, it's much improved but still lacking compared to the benchmarks that are either less money or only slightly more.

I used the EGO for convivence today, only used 2 bars from the 5.0 ah battery on this big vehicle.

I also got this wall storage kit mounted to my detailing cart.

The panel fits perfectly between the upper and middle shelves, the screw holes are even conveniently positioned. The kit comes with several of each type of attachment, including a towel or bottle rail.

I take a punt of many different products and tools with the idea of adapting or improving my process. Some are duds, this is one of the winners!

Speaking of duds, this has been the latest "bin cleaner" product..............

DP Waterless Wash Concentrate which I bought way before I started experimenting with products like ONR, N-914 and Absolute. I used it once and absolutely hated it for its smeary finish. It's sat at the back of the cabinet for a long, long time. The "bin cleaner" reference means that I use dud products to clean the wheely bins with. Next product for this role, probably Stjarnagloss Sno or Auto Finesse Lather. Again, you win some, you lose some.

It's too bad Griot's Garage isn't available and/or would cost too much to get there because you would LOVE Griot's Garage products, quality from top to bottom DIY Detail is getting off to a great start as well, there's gotta be a way to get these products to you reasonably

Two weeks leave from my main job starts as of now, not returning until February 8th. I will still need to continue to do my private gardening jobs, no rest for the self-employed.

I keep getting asked if I'm "going away". Going away where? What for? I can't think of anything worse to be honest. All that work preparing, traveling to, traveling back, spending the whole time away just wanting to go home and rest.......no thanks. I have everything I want to do right here at home, a list of projects that has kept me at least somewhat motivated for the last couple of months.

The phone is being turned off and I'm hiding from people as much as possible.

I used to get asked the same thing at my old job. When I hit 30 years, I got a $2500 bonus, but they don't give you the cash, you have to spend it and then claim it back. So I bought a bunch of accessories for the FJ. I kept getting asked why I didn't spend it on a holiday. My answer, my holidays are spent going somewhere in the FJ. If I'd spent it on a holiday, it would be all done and forgotten, I've still got the FJ.

Society has a habit of making people feel bad about not following what everyone else is doing.

I don't drink, never have. So of course, I get the usual baiting by people trying to just get me to "have one". And of course, I get left on the outer for not playing along.

I hate travel. So, of course people are puzzled when I say I'm not going anywhere and then made to feel like I'm somehow missing out on life.

I'm an Aussie male, so of course I am supposed to love AFL football and support a team till death. Except I hate football and all the pointless media attention it gets.........you know the stuff, Jo Jo Smith had dyed his hair purple and has decided to take up knitting in his spare time.......... So again, there is something wrong with me for not giving a cr.p about the whole thing.

Anyway, rant over.

I don’t understand how you live with yourself with that long list of character defects. Lol! You Do You!

Holiday Project One - Ceramic Coating the Jag Part 1.

This is a project I have been planning in my head for a couple of months now, today was the start of me finally following through with it.

The plan here was to use the Jag as the test subject for applying my first full ceramic coating. I have played with wheel and trim coatings before, and had a brief encounter with Gyeon Can Coat, but this will be my first proper paint coating. More on that in part two, today was all about the preparation.

First step was the decontamination process, starting with a wash with a high alkaline soap in the form of Carpro Lift. As you can see, this is an extremely good foaming product that offers considerably more cleaning power compared to regular maintenance soaps. Here, I'm using it with a TRC 10X wash pad.

Once rinsed of the soap residue, it was time for the unpleasant step, iron removal.

I hate using these products, the smell lingers with me hours, even after a shower. In this case I'm using Carpro IronX. After a decent dwell period, I was lucky enough to have cloud cover today, I thoroughly rinsed the vehicle. A dark red car tends to hide the iron reaction, but I could see the reaction had occurred by the colour of the runoff.

Next up, the clay process. I had this brand-new clay mitt to try, used with Meguiar's Final Inspection as the lubricant. Note that I have not bothered to dry the car before this step. Also worth noting that it's important to break in your new clay block, pad or towel on the glass first.

These clay mitts are double sided, one side is the actual clay surface, the reverse side is microfiber.

The next step is probably unnecessary, you could simply rinse off the remaining clay lubricant, but after using an iron remover I always like to follow up with another foaming, in this case I had some left-over Shine Supply Shift ready to go.

After another rinse, the decon process is complete. I then dried the car with my Big Boi, following up with a towel to get any remaining drips. I like to use my prep-spray here to kill two birds with one stone, getting the car fully dry and wiped down with a prep product in one step. Using the medium Gauntlet as normal here.

The next step is one I detest, the masking process. It's like I'm so close to getting started on the polishing and this is the only thing standing in my way! Time spent doing this tedious step is always worth it though. I like the Carpro red tape for this task. The Jag is also pretty easy to tape up, having minimal exposed rubber and unpainted plastic trims.

I also placed a couple of utility towels at the base of the windshield to prevent dust building up down there, a trick I learned from fellow forum member fordomatic.

All of the work so far has been in preparation for polishing, providing the cleanest possible surface to work with. Because I have chosen a Gyeon coating, I wanted to try their version of a primer polish, appropriately named Primer, a product that offers minor correction ability while also laying down a base layer of Si02 to help the coating bond as strongly as possible.

You absolutely don't need to use a primer polish when applying a coating, in my case I only needed the mild polishing ability offered here by Primer. If I was chasing ultimate perfection or required more cut, then I would be looking towards a pure polish with the level of cut I needed. Today, I used Primer on a Shine Mate blue pad or the Rupes yellow on the Nano.

I had all of my machines out for today, including the new Rupes LHR75 pneumatic.

Wow, what a machine that LHR75 is! It so smooth and very intuitive to use, even with the air hose hanging over your shoulder. I actually kept picking this unit up more than the others. Overall, I used the bigger 5-inch Shine Mate for the bonnet and doors only. The rest of the car dealt with a combination of the 3-inch Shine Mate, the LHR75 and the Nano. Being a smaller car, a 3-inch machine gets way more use than normal, including the stubby little boot lid.

For some areas, like the gloss window pillars, I needed to break out Sonax Perfect Finish to clean them up beyond what Primer could achieve. Overall, Primer is an extremely easy product to work with, the wipe off is perfection. The only slight drawback is some dusting.

With the paint and gloss trims polished, I wanted to address the glass while I had the machines out. This was my first time using P&S Clarity Creme, a dedicated glass polish that is much more user friendly than something like Carpro CeriGlass. In my case, I didn't need to remove anything nasty like water spots or scratches, so the Clarity Creme was all about deep cleaning the glass in preparation for a sealant. This was another job for the LHR75 and again, what a beast that thing is! Pad choice is a Lake Country SDO blue cutting pad.

I went to the trouble of adding extra masking tape to protect the surrounding rubber seals, it would seem that step is not as important for Clarity Creme as it is for CeriGlass.

The next step was to remove the polish dust using compressed air and a damp towel. You can use a prep spray at this point too, as long as it's been at least 15 minutes after using Primer. Gyeon say that it's not entirely necessary, but I still think it's good practice.

And that is where I decided to leave it for today. Overall, I'm happy with how it came up. It's not perfect, I wasn't aiming for that on this car, but it certainly meets my standards.

I have a couple of microfiber blankets on hand for extended projects like this, covering the vehicle until tomorrow.

The car is now ready for the application of the coating, including the glass.

Deyon, I'm surprised the IronX has ANY work to do, LOL️Those extra steps are what people like us LOVE to do, I always go overboard when prepping because THAT is the time to use everything and make it right

Looking forward to the rest of the write-up
